About TIme....

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Can't believe it's been over a year since my last blog entry. So, I guess it's about time for one....

2013 was rough. I changed jobs, not once but twice, when the 1st firm I went to turned out to be a bunch of F- - -wits who didn't want the skills I had to offer. At least not until the day I quit, then all of a sudden they were willing to do back flips for me. Add to that a colleague who periodically took it in his head to come curse me out at the top of his lungs, and place number 1 had to go. Enter place number 2. Started there in June and it's been a real adjustment. It's a smaller firm than the one I was at for the previous 14 years. And they hadn't had any really continuity in my department over the last 5 or 6 years, except for one guy in the LI office who doesn't provide any thought leadership to the Firm. So I definitely have my challenges cut out for me here. Whether it's backward thinking partners or small-firm mentality that throws a barricade in front of me, I plant my hand and hurdle it. Of course often I'm keeping in mind the great old adage "It's better to ask forgiveness than for permission!" emoticon

2013 also saw it's share of health issues. 2 cancer scares, including the one every woman fears deep in her soul -- breast cancer. Thankfully, all is well. But for a while there I was really scared. I'd even constructed a whole worst case scenario in my mind...mastectomy, reconstruction, I'd even designed some brilliant tattoos for the girls -- one's that symbolized strength and wisdom. It sounds ridiculous now, but at the time, it made perfect sense to me. Also had some surgery for an unrelated issue. So all in all 2013 pretty much SUCKED!

But all of that is the PAST!!!

Enter 2014....Jan 31 starts the year of the Horse and that is MY year! So 2014 is going to be my year to ROCK!!

About the same time I was running around to doctors I registered at a new gym right around the corner from the office (no excuses) and started working out with a trainer. After the first leg workout my heels didn't touch the ground for 3 days b/c my calfs just would NOT release! I've come a long way since that first workout. My trainer pushes me hard and I ache when I leave the gym, but I also feel empowered and strong. May not be able to lift my arms but I still feel STRONG!

Now I'm getting back in the biking and soon the running. I WILL conquer that 5K this year if it kills me!! Was supposed to be today that I started running, but got hit with a little blizzard and had to rejuggle my plans. So I came home and rode for 17 miles. May crank out a few more before bed. LOL (I think I'm getting a little obsessed).

So that's a bit about where I've been and where I'm headed. Here's hoping all my pals have a wonderful 2014!

Tory - So glad to see this blog from you! I'd been a little concerned because you were on SPARK pretty frequently, then soon after the (1st) job change (away from the wicked witch) and the arrival of your new couch - you effectively disappeared. I'd occasionally see you in my friend feed as having acquired a bunch of exercise points, but no blogs, no spark-mails. I am so sorry you went through all that medical garbage and while I'm delighted to hear it all came out okay in the end, I hope you know you have friends here you can vent to and blog to and get support from in situations like that.

SO - keep up the good work and don't over-do the workouts and keep smiling - AND hang in there with your lovely snow storm. The Denver Broncos will be playing in the Superbowl and we'll all be watching your weather more closely than usual for the next ten days or so as a result.

You were missed and glad to see you're back. emoticon

Welcome back! I was afraid the great Midwest wasteland had swallowed you (I seem to remember you were relocating to someplace like Minnesota or Wisconsin?). Scary about the medical scares but thankfully you are ok. Except for the bit about not being able to lift your arms lol. I don't miss the snow at all. I have just (since Sunday) added biking to the training I have to start a month ago, after finally getting my bike seat fixed. Now I'm trying to figure out what biking gear I actually need...padded pants are a definite yes but I'm not sure I need special biking shoes just yet (already have the most important helmet!).

What a Month....

Thursday, November 15, 2012

I do NOT even know where to begin...it's been a wild month. Between being on vacation, a spur of the moment trip to Vegas where I won a packet at blackjack, the delivery of my couch after 6 aborted attempts, the hurricane and subsequent snowstorm, and cap it off with finding a new job!

Had a great vacation. Really relaxed and got some stuff done around NYC. It was great. I read tons -- discovered a new author I'm really enjoying (Steve Berry) -- walked tons and worked out like a demon, until I got to Vegas that is.... The week before I left for Sin City, the sofa company I'd ordered my new couch from back in Sept, called to say that the couch was in and they could deliver it Wed. Then they called back to say no...not in the warehouse yet. Then the called Tuesday to say they could deliver it wednesday, then ...nope not in warehouse yet. Then they called Wed and said they could deliver on Thursday. Then they called to say...nope didn't make it on the truck. Then I got a message a 1/2 hour later saying it was coming. By the time I got that message they were closed so I had no idea if it was coming or not til Thursday morning! 10 guesses? Yeah you're right, it didn't come. But it would DEFINITELY be ready the folowing week. OK...one problem.....I was going to be in Vegas! So we arranged to deliver it on the 31st. I figured that was my mom's b-day so I could work from home and have diner with her and all would be right with the world with me on my new couch!

Vegas was great! I went hiking 2 days -- once to red rocks and once to Mt Charleston. The weather was perfect. Cool mornings and not too hot days. One day I walked the length of the strip geocaching. You'd be amazed how many caches are hidden up and down that one road. LOL I stayed at the Venetian, and had a great room. The only thing I didn't like about the hotel was the gym. I think I almost killed myself when I was doing my running intervals. The bloody treadmill had a mind of it's own and at one point it ramped up to 10mph. REALLY??? was the stupid thing trying to kill me??? So muh as I liked the room and the casino, I will think long and hard before I stay there again. Speaking of the casino, I think I had my best trip ever to Vegas as far as winnings go. After losing my pre-allotted daily gambling allowance the first night after a respectable 2 hours of play. I won every night after that! It was awesome! Now the one down side of Vegas is that you can't turn around and not be surrounded by FOOD! There is food every where!! Although it's not the healthiest routine I ended up eating breakfast and dinner. Trust me an early morning breakfast was MORE than enough food to last me the entire day! Now the plus side of Vegas is the walking. I was logging over 10 miles a day of walking alone.

Back in the City, the same day I'm supposed to go back to work, a hurricane or frankenstorm or nor'easter, or whatever you want to call it hits!. Really??? Irene, last year was supposed to be a hundred year storm. Now this one was a hundred year storm....I know time flies but seriously...noone ever said it travelled at light speed! Compared to many in the area I got off light. No damage, no power outage, just watching my picture window bow every time it got hit by a gust of wind. At least the office was smart enough to close Mon & Tues before it struck, so noone was out in it. My assistant and everal people from the office lost everything. So I was lucky. Very lucky! Monday the sofa company also called to reschedule the delivery of the couch. LOL Now it was going to be the following Tuesday -- 8 days later. OY! The rest of the week life slowly returned to normal as transportation was restored and the mess was being cleaned up. Some of my friends only got power back this weekend. A few are stil out.

Anyway....before I'd left for Vegas a friend of mine who knew I was looking to change firms, called me and hooked me up with a head hunter who had a position available at another firm. Apparently their head of QC is well past retirement and they need to do some succession planning. That's where I come in. So I met with them last week....twice! The first interview was 4 on one. The 2nd was 6 on 1. Nothing like a little pressure. This Monday I got the verbal offer and tonight I got the the formal written offer. So...Deember 3 I will be working for a new Firm. Those of you who know me, know that I've been unhappy where I am for a while. Well, time for a fresh start! A lot of fresh starts!! The best part....they're bringing me in as a Principal. That's the step below Partner! It's a huge message that this firm believes in my potential!

I think that pretty much brings me up to date. Been a helluva month!

Oh yeah...the couch arrived and it not only looks great...but I don't get any back pain when I sleep on it!!!

I should use your blogs as examples for my students on how to write with voice. LOL I love reading them. I can practically see you sitting right here telling the tales! Congrats on your new job and the couch! It must feel great to get outta there! Believe it or not, my teaching interviews were intense too. The first one with the district was two people. Then at the school, there were 5 of them questioning me one after another. I loved the intensity of it, but was exhausted when it was over. YOU ROCK and they scored big time! It's so nice to have a minute to catch up with my Sparklers! emoticon emoticon

A Good Day...

Tuesday, October 02, 2012

Although the day started off with a short meeting at the office -- yeah, yeah I know...I'm on vacation! One of my colleagues needed a consult, so I figured I'd swing in, do the consult, have my pre-worout snack and then hit the gym for my run and some biking time. The weather managed to hold off as I walked to the office, but it was raining by the time I got done at the gym so the walk back home was a bit damp!

Picked up lunch on the way back, chatted with mom and some friends, did some reading, took a nap. Then when I woke up I realized completely forgot to pick up lettuce for dinner. Of course by then it was pouring outside! So what did I do....easy...some body weight exercises! LOL Then when the rain stopped, I slogged back out into the damp to get the bloody lettuce. Now I think I'm going to have something else for dinner. LOL Oh well it'll be here for tomorrow.

That's about all for tonight. Nothing exciting just a good day with a lot of fitness!

New Month....New Goals

Monday, October 01, 2012

So OK. A week or so ago I vowed to forget the scale (well not entirely) and concentrate on measurements. So what happens....I lost 3 lbs this week! Go figure!! Anyway...still focusing on those measurements and of course the starting point is by actually taking my measurements -- always a slightly traumatic event. LOL BUT thanks to a recommendation from a friend who chall remain GetStrongrrr, much easier this time. He recomended something called Myotape.

This made taking the measurements a breeze! Just loop the tape, push the button and bingo! Accurate measurements. LOVE IT!!! So now I have a starting point.

Today I took two long walks...one thru central park in the morning and one tonight around a nice quiet neighborhood without a lot of traffic (I know, an oxymoron in NYC, but everything is relative). Also did some HIIT on the bike and some bodyweight ST. I am SO loving this tribesports site. Challenges galore -- from one offs to do X for a week, to 2 weeks to an entire month. One of the challenges I've undertaken is to bike around the coatline of Ireland (3,171.20kms) I may be doing this for the rest of my natural life. LOL It's great fun. And I'm having a blast!

Well that's all the news that's fit to print for tonight! Have a good one!!

It's kind of like quantum mechanics....once you observe it, the weight never changes....look away, and voila!

I think the myotape is one pretty darn cool invention! Get to cranking on those push-ups again and watch those arms shape right up.

How goes the non-smoking campaign? Tough to ride around the Emerald Isles huffing and puffing

I Quit!!.....

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Well....OK! I'm not REALLY quitting. Well I am...but not the way y'all think. Ya can't get rid of me that easy!

What I AM quitting is being a slave to the bloody scale! In the last 2 months I set very modest weight loss goals. Not more than 5lbs a month. And in each month I was lucky if I lost 1 or 2. Not for lack of trying either! I watched what I ate, finally managed to get the daily recommended amounts of fiber in my diet without resorting to bran muffins (YUCK!), and worked out regularly on top of walking to and from work everyday. But NONE of it reflected in the scale.

A few weeks ago, I got the newletter fro my gym and it had a picture of two guys who weighed the same amount. One had a pregnancy belly (y'all know what I'm talking about). The other....well let's just say there's not a woman in the world that would have kicked this guy out for eating crackers in bed!!

And I got to thinking....it's NOT the number on the scale it's how you package the number!! SO! For the next month, while I will still weigh in, I'm going to concentrate more on tightening up what I've got and trying to make a dent in some inches! I can't tell you how many times people tell me I've lost so much weight...I've lost FOUR lbs in 2 mos!! But I am definitely smaller (Yes Getstrongrrr, I need to get new slacks!). So, the goal for the next month is to lose 1 inch on the waist, 2 on the hips and 1 on the thighs!

Oct 1, I measure up and the challenge is on!

And the scale can go get stuffed!!

The weight scale is just one indicator of your success. I lost a lot of weight and feel so much better. I can't lose as much weight as before, so I am working on balanced meals. Right balance of carbs, fats, and proteins. Keep working on something.

Whew, for a minute there I though we lost another valiant Spark Soldier!

I gotta' tell 'ya, I decided a month or so ago that I could stay happy at 180 lbs as long as I was fit, trim, and healthy.

It's actually been pretty amazing this week to see so many people my own age and to be told I look 20 years younger than "those guys". I even went out shopping for a sportscoat with my sister.....and surprisingly found a real nice one (in under an hour) in an athletic cut that looks just awesome!

I recommend getting one of these bad boys to help you take those measurements:

Yes! This is absolutely right. As you exercise, you add muscle to your body. A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, but the muscle takes up a LOT less space. Besides, losing two pounds a month means those are two pounds you are likely not going to gain back.

emoticon

You're doing it! Congratulations!

(Don't be slave to the measuring tape, either, by the way. How you're feeling about yourself is a better measure than anything else and that's hard to quantify.)

SLUNDQUIS does have a point about changing nutrition, but also other things. Your body gets use to doing things if they are always the same, and then your body can get in somewhat of a rut. Sometimes you have to "shake" things up so to speak to confuse your body. I must say I have had to do it a time or two, and surprisingly it does work. Measuring does give you a bigger picture. Best of luck!!

I'll always remember the blog of another member. She lost quite a bit of weight by just watching what she ate, going down a few sizes. When she added exercise, though she didn't lose that much more weight, the size change was more dramatic.
Eventually, your body gets to a point where it doesn't want to lose weight.. that point probably is higher as we get older. But your body probably doesn't do as much against things tightening up.
I haven't really lost much weight since the beginning of the year. But it's also when I started adding some jogging and WOW! did i see differences!!! for the first time in (20) years, the .. well, loose skin.. on the inside of my leg, below my knee was gone. Despite all the cardio I've done for years. But biggest yet - my thighs got smaller. I use the same scale to get an idea of things, but the measuring tape is my new bestest buddy!

You can even change you tracker to measure inches lost. It's actually a more accurate measure of what you are trying to achieve - both from a health standpoint and a vanity standpoints. Great decision.

I could not agree with you MORE!!!! It is so hard to want something so badly and not be able to get it no matter how hard you try. Everything else I want...I usually get. Especially, when I devote all my energy into it. That is why the number can just drive you crazy because you have put so much mental and physical energy into it and yet the reward is not as big as you would like! I feel you!!! But...

I need to look on the bright side. Because if your anything like me you just ignore the praise you are getting. Like when my niece said that she could see my face was looking thinner...Or when several co-workers have commented on how nice I look. We should try not to brush those comments aside in favor of the number on the scale.

I am wondering if you have changed your daily caloric intake. There's nothing wrong with skipping the scale or tightening up what you have, but if you change the calories even just 50 calories a day may show more on the scale. In the past I have had to lower the calories and raise them, but I just wanted to give you something to think about.
