Day 19 Has anyone used a balance ball instead of a chair at their desk?

Saturday, January 19, 2013

I've had a busy Saturday, lots to do. I'll be in bed easily by 9. Lots of cleaning to add to fitness minutes--and completed Bootcamp Week 2, starting 3 tomorrow. The challenge was to double a video a couple of days, and I doubled several. I'm pleased that I'm managing the early AM workouts; it does help me get going and ready to start when I get to work.

Four loads of laundry clean, but not put away yet. :-) I spent some time on fixing, stain-removing, etc. I was SO relieved that blood from a scratched hand came out of my favorite ivory-colored quilted jacket. Also happy that a set-in salad dressing stain that I didn't notice right away came out. Simple bleach took care of a couple of spots on a shirt, and my clothes are ready to wear again. Now to fold and put it all away.

I made a big pot of ham and northern white bean soup with a ham bone from the freezer. I got the recipe from a Southern Living magazine a few years ago, and it's always a hit around here. Had baked salmon, couscous with leftover broccoli from the garden, and squash for dinner.

Ended up with 1373 calories and 75 fitness minutes.

Hmm - read your latest and this post -- Now wondering if that ball that is deflated in my closet is tall enough for my computer desk. It would be great to work on the core while I'm just sitting here.

I have used a balance ball and it did help my posture a lot. I used to lean forward badly, now I am much more conscious of it!

Great job balancing your cals ... Sounds like you had a productive day! Nice feeling, isn't it?
One of my managers had a ball at her desk for a while. Somehow, she ended up popping it as she sat on it!!

I use a balance ball at the home computer sometimes (sitting on one now)

I think it helps me to be more conscious of my posture. And you cannot use anything other than your legs to stand!

Ahhh You had me at the Ham & Bean soup. emoticon Haven't had that in years. You have inspired me to make some this week. Sounds like your day was a very productive one my friend. Good for you!! Sitting on a balance ball is supposed to be great for balance, posture and abdominal strengthening. Although I haven't done it myself. Keep up the excellent work!!

Excellent spirit! Keep up the good work! I tried for a bit to use the ball as a chair but need a taller one.. or a shorter desk.

I used a ball as a chair at work for a year or so. Had to get a large ball to get it tall enough. It's definitely more fun than a chair!

Whether it's better than a chair depends on the chair and how you sit. If you tend to slump into your chair then the ball will help, but if you are already sitting on the edge of your chair you might not feel much difference.

One thing about the ball if you are going to use it at work - if you don't have a wall behind your desk and you need to get up frequently, it will try to run away. ;)

You are doing so well; very hard when working too. I used to use a balance ball at my computer. No noticeable difference but it's supposed to help the core. Thank you for reminding me about this. Off to get mine now!

Sounds like you had a very productive and busy day. I have yet to finish my exercise. Going nuts trying to get my assignment done. I could not find that much on the Lakota Indian religion in the library. maybe i should have picked an easier person like Oprah for my essay; instead of Caoch Phil Jackson; who has a mix of lakota religion with his so called Zen-Christian philophsy.

Day 18 and TGIF

Friday, January 18, 2013

Ooof. Spent much of the day sitting in a workshop. I managed some leg lifts under the table without kicking anybody, walked around the back of the room on a short break, and did tummy tighten/releases while putting gas in my car. Those were freebie extras in addition to:

3 SP videos: Bootcamp video + cardio + qi gong this evening.
my 2nd 30 min walk this week. I set a goal of three, and I'm almost there.

Total 85 fitness minutes. Not bad at all for another busy day.

Food: a little over, but not by much. Eliminating one snack gave me some wiggle room, and I feel really good about the extra fitness efforts. I ate lunch out at the Serendipity Cafe, one of my favorite places in Dunedin, Fla. It specializes in gluten-free and organic menu. I had black beans and rice with onions and salsa, kale "chips", and chocolate coffee that helped keep me awake during second half of workshop.
emoticonI met my Week 2 Bootcamp goal of doubling videos this week. Hm. I need a reward for that. What? emoticon

Great job! You are really settling down nicely with your new job and exercise! Is it still hot there? We are headed to Punta Gorda and then Siesta Key in February. It's going to be 20 here this week! Ugh!!!

Without knowing what you consider a reward, it's hard to guess.
Something you can buy for your body, like new clothes? A mani/pedi? a massage?
If money is an issue, perhaps doing something you have been meaning to do but haven't made the time? Give yourself a pedicure at home? Sit in a bubble bath with candles?

Day 17 at peace with myself today

Thursday, January 17, 2013

1260 calories or somewhere thereabouts. I had to estimate dinner out, but it was definitely within range

34 fitness minutes. Rain sabotaged the walk I hoped to do, but considering how busy I was, 34 min was really good!

I just read UNIQUEDRAGONFLY's blog on zen, and it reminded me of how I felt earlier today when I had to decide about whether to do or not do something important. The words I heard in my mind were, "Don't think; feel." That sense can be trusted especially when thinking isn't getting me anywhere.
