New Job Eve

Tuesday, October 02, 2012

Another full day, with room for fun in it. I had the last of my appointments, did the crucial errands, and gave myself some treats.

Lunch with my mom. We had great 330 cal salads.
Bought a new planner with serene nature pics.
Bought a new sketchpad with a hobbit cover! Can't wait to use it!
Checked out an audio book for my commute.

Good dr visit today; wish I had more time to blog about it. She wants me to try Paleo, and I've decided not now. I don't need the stress of drastically changing my eating along with starting a new job, new routine, and many new things to learn. I will look into it and see if there are small steps I can take to start with.

1413 calories and 54 fitness minutes. Ten minutes into a job-related video, I thought why just sit here? I can work out. I got out some dumbbells and resistance band and went at it for 35 additional fitness minutes. emoticon emoticon
OK, fellow emoticon, I am ready!

Totals yesterday: 1484 calories & 49 fitness minutes

Totals today: 1412 calories & 26 fitness minutes

I'm getting there! Chiropracter and dentist today. Tomorrow I have a dr appointment, the only one I didn't need to change this week. I will find out tomorrow afternoon exactly when I start work. I told husband that the way this last week has been, going to work will be a relief!

I made a trial run this morning to see how long my commute would be in work traffic and where the backups would occur. I'm glad I did it; I hadn't thought about the school zone I'll be driving through. Not a bad drive. I'll have to look for some good audio books for the car.

I made a Sparkrecipe for dinner, the macaroni & cheese that calls for butternut squash. That was one of the first recipes I tried, and I think it's delicious. You'd never guess about the squash. Also made a loaf of banana bran bread with Splenda, extra bananas, no nuts, and a cup of a high fiber cereal I was not impressed with. It may not be much as a cereal, but it made great fake nuts!

SABLENESS is going to bed early--like now. emoticon

Ha! I made the butternut squash mac&cheese too! I'm not a big salt eater, but I think I didn't put enough in. Maybe I should measure next time. Wish I could go to bed...still have to do my last pharmacy CE course so I can submit my recertification.

Sleepy Saturday and low energy

Saturday, September 29, 2012

SABLENESS feels sleepy and sluggish this morning. Since I got the call about my soon-to-be job on Tuesday, I've been constantly on the go. I think my body is saying, "ENOUGH. GIVE IT A REST."

I do have things that must be done today. The cats are almost out of dry food, I have a big basket of laundry to put away, and I'm sure I could easily make a long list. But the world won't fall apart if I don't do them, aside from the cat food.

My choir has a concert at 5, rehearsal at 3:15, which means leaving the house around 2:20 to drive across the bay to pick up another choir member on the way. I need to make sure my folder is in order and review a spot or two.

Cats and choir are non-negotiable, and I will feel better if I devote a timed period to basic house maintainance. I had intended to ride my bike this morning, and I may yet do it, but I woke up with such low energy that I decided to do something gentle instead. I've done my daily morning stretch routine and a 14 min SP yoga video.

What to do?

Put the laundry away; I'll feel better with it done and out of sight.

Find the cat food coupon and get myself to the store. Walk from one end of the shopping center to the other while I'm there.

Take 10 min to arrange choir folder and look over music.

That much will do. To uplift my spirits, sit down with Mama's Back-to-Work Cookbook that my daughter made for me . Hm. Should do that before getting cat food so I can pick up ingredients to make one of her recipes.

Start now with the quiet time for meditation that I was too sleepy to do earlier.

PM edit: I realized that two days of the very bottom of my cal range or below, plus not enough protein for breakfast, contributed to my tired day. I got the cat food, walked for 20 min at the shopping center, and sang in an excellent concert. Afterward, husband and I went out for dinner to celebrate my new job.

Dinner choices:
No glass of wine; stuck to water with lime
One roll, no butter
Ordered steamed broccoli instead of pilaf or potato
Final choice - share dessert OR finish my delicious dinner. Dinner won. I figured the rest of my entree was probably fewer calories than half a decadent dessert anyway. The best I can figure, I ended up within cal range AGAIN!

327 breakfast
345 lunch
70 snack
636 dinner
30 snack 2

Total 1409 + 40 min fitness

You will get a nice schedule going after you start your new job. Spinds like you feel like you are thinking it you won't have time after you start working. You will have time. You also have a nice, caring husband who I am sure will help you!!

I run one errand per day on the way home from work. They are written in my calendar so I don't forget. Now that Fall has arrived I know I won't get anything done if I go home first. It's getting dark earlier now and tends to make me feel like not doing anything either.

Try to relax - you are going to do great!!

Me too. Don't feel like doing much at all, so I'm only doing the essentials, like laundry. The underwear situation is getting desperate! emoticon
Couldn't find the cookbook last night either. There must be an easier way to search. I'll try to "sort that out" tomorrow.
See you shortly!

Cut yourself some slack. Do the must-dos and let the other stuff wait. What's the worst that will happen if you don't get every little thing done today? emoticon

Decide what has to be done and do it. Things that should be done but don't have to be done, do them if you feel like it. Stuff that could be done doesn't deserve your attention.

Whew! TGIF

Friday, September 28, 2012

This has been a long day. I had New Hire Processing from 8-1, a chiropracter appointment this afternoon, and numerous errands.

Big plusses today:
1. Got up early enough to do a SP video
2. Prepared as much as possible last night, including snacks
3. Made a SP recipe, Thai Peanut Sesame Noodles, for dinner
4. Resisted temptation to stop for a large lunch, went home instead and ate a reasonable one
5. Just finished a Qi Gong SP video. Perfect for bedtime relaxation and 15 more fitness minutes

My mom gave me a generous check for new clothes for new job!
My daughter gave me a notebook labeled "Mama's Back-To-Work Cookbook" with her favorite SP and other healthy recipes.
She also gave me a pilates DVD and pilates bar, something new to try!

End of day
266 breakfast
319 lunch
68 snack
402 dinner

Total 1056 + 36 fitness minutes. I'm under on calories, but dinner was late, and I don't feel at all hungry for my usual evening snack.

I am about to rejoin the workforce after nearly two and half years of unemployment. My days are about to drastically change. I'm wondering how I'm going to keep up with my meals, fitness, friends, and especially my latest team Fall 5% Challenge. It just this moment occurred to me to ask for help - duh. As a Little Red Hen type, this is not my norm. SP, you've changed me forever. So, friends and community, how do you do it? What works best for you?

I will be working M-F 8-3:30, plus Wed/Thur evening rehearsals and Sundays 8-12:30. Yes, I'm keeping my choir job.
AMCMASTER, are you reading this? You are a pro. emoticon

316 breakfast
252 lunch
168 snack
325 dinner
139 snack

1200 total & 17 intentional fitness minutes, but I had a very active day. Up early tomorrow for new hire processing.

Here is a link to the cookbook. You should see two recipes - one private and one public. Let me know if you can't see both of them and we'll "sort that out"!
Also, a couple more thoughts:
1. Take some time on the weekend to plan all your meals and snacks for the week. It not only consolidates grocery shopping, but it helps me stay on track, knowing that I have tasty meals to look forward to. I try to do as much cooking as possible on the weekends, so everything is ready to be eaten when I'm hungry. However, I only track my food daily. If I enter my meals too far ahead, it feels too regimented and I'm more likely to eat things I shouldn't!
2. I would recommend bumping up your calorie intake for at least the first couple of weeks at the new job, instead of trying to eat at the very bottom of your range. You'll need the extra calories as you acclimate and you don't want to feel exhausted like you did on Saturday.

Log days food before you go to work- less likelynto graze. Mtake workout clothes to work so you change before leaving and can exercise on the way home. Ot helps the mental jump from home to work, too.

I don't work now but for many years I used to do 10-15 minutes jogging before setting out for work and before breakfast. Then, whatever I felt like after work as far as exercise went, I knew I had that regular movement done.
Enjoy the new job. It sounds fantastic!

Enjoy the cookbook! lol Let me know if there's anything missing that you can think of - I have lots more recipes. I agree with everyone who says to pack your lunch the night before. It takes too much time in the morning, especially as I pack breakfast, lunch, and two snacks. Plan your exercise the night before too, especially if you're still doing videos. It helps prevent "faffing" around, as Simon would say. I don't have to think about what I'm doing in the morning. I just roll out of bed, grab my yoga mat, feed the cats, and start my yoga routine. emoticon

Ok, I think it will actually be easier for you because you will be working. Here goes...
I an my breakfast the night before - and I use a measuring cup. I pack my lunch and afternoon snack and take them to work. I buy a lot of indinvual portion sizes and have certain staple foods always in supply in my fridge -- Yoplait light yogurt, 2%cottage cheese, weightwatchers string cheese, veggie dogs, veggie burgers, fruit or fruit cups...

Dinner - put in crockpot in morning - smells do good when u get home - yum!

Exercise - 3 choices - early morning, lunch break (pack workout clothes, shampoo, bath gel and towel), or when you get home. Most important is to write it in your calendar and stick to it!

Hope this helps- you can do it!!

    Pack meals & bring snacks!
Make sure you drink a lot of water even if you are busy.
Schedule your exercise if you can.
It will be tough with friends because your schedule may clash more now since you will have less free time.

Good luck!

I eat steel cut oats most mornings, so I make a big pot at the beginning of the week. I pack my breakfast and lunch the night before. This allows me to get in some exercise in the morning to get my day off to a good start. I also keep snacks like protein bars and little packages of nuts in my office for snacks.
