220 snack
547 dinner

1474 total calories & 41 fitness minutes

Pretty good for super busy day and company for dinner!

Tues AM edit: Oops. I forgot to add the hors d'oeuvres. Add 265 cal for cheese and crackers for a total of 1739. I thought the previous total was surprisingly low. Still, only 189 over.

Fall Challenge progress before it starts!

Sunday, September 23, 2012

emoticonThe Fall 5% Challenge hasn't even started yet, and already it's doing just what I hoped. My commitment to intentional exercise and creative extras is reSparked. I had to leave the house at 7 this morning--and still got in a 10 min SP video emoticonand some wakeup stretches emoticon. That was especially good, given that I'd had an insomnia fit in the middle of the night. emoticonI finally did get back to sleep, but was nowhere near ready to wake up when the emoticonwent off at 6.

I'd planned breakfast the night before emoticon, remembering to include coffee with half & half between church services. After sleeping so poorly, this was a definitely a two cup morning. emoticon emoticon I sing in a professional choir and drive across the bay for an 8 AM rehearsal for 9:00 service, followed by 10:30 rehearsal for 11:15 service. emoticonI love it, but it's a really long morning. I stuck a small can of low sodium V8
emoticonin my choir bag to tide me over till lunch.

After shopping for groceries and emoticonfood, it was past 2:00 when I got home. I made a nice discovery: 1/2 of a Publix cuban sandwich is 270 calories. And to think I use to snarf down a whole one easily at 540 calories. No wonder the pounds crept emoticonand emoticon. Yes, I admit I could still finish the whole thing, but--an important word--BUT I chose not to. With my V8, lunch was only 300 cal total. emoticonActually 311. I forgot a couple of baby carrots.

Today's preliminary assignment is to clean out refrigerator and pantry and plan ahead for shopping. I've got a good start on it already. Can't wait for the real thing to begin! emoticon

Today's totals:
350 breakfast
311 lunch
65 snack #1
306 dinner
175 snack #2

That's the style! I think the preliminaries are a good half of the challenge as far as effectiveness goes. Now, off to the pantry and cupboards . . .

Calorie cutting tricks

Saturday, September 22, 2012

emoticon I buy Cabot's 75% reduced fat cheese. It's delicious, and I don't miss the fat.
emoticonPepperidge Farm makes wheat and oatmeal breads that are 45 cal per slice. I can have a whole sandwich for the same calories as one slice of regular bread. I've also been using sugar-free fruit spreads on PBJ sandwiches at only 5 cal per teaspoon.

emoticonDiscovered last night that leftover pea pods are great dipped in hummus for a low-cal healthy snack. You can buy snap pea crisps, but these are definitely superior.

emoticonUnless I'm looking for protein, unsweetened almond milk is only 30-40 calories, depending on the brand. It's really good with cocoa.
emoticonI recently made SP peanut butter cookies. I made small ones so that three of mine equaled the calories in one according to the recipe. I felt a lot happier about eating 2 or 3 than just one--for same or less calories!
emoticonI buy ultradark. One piece satisfies me much better than milk chocolate where the first ingredient is SUGAR.
emoticonherbal teas, especially blueberry
emoticonWEIGH AND MEASURE. Don't trust myself to get it right.
emoticondiscovered that turkey bacon is OK
emoticonGet sugar-free if I'm going to indulge in ice cream. It has built in consequences for OD-ing. Have to exercise portion control unless I want to live in the bathroom.
emoticonPlan ahead for special occasions and enjoy them!

End of day:

I like turkey bacon too. I think counting calories is the way to control your intake and be accountable. But I can't bring myself to keep track, I try to use portion control. When it's out of the house I can control my food intake. Good blog.

Post-Interview Jitters and Pumpkin Spice Latte

Friday, September 21, 2012

After a job interview this morning, I was sorely tempted to stop somewhere for a treat, an edible high calorie one--but didn't. Instead, I took the time to stroll around the lake at a small but beautifully landscaped retreat center on the bay. I stopped thinking about what I'd said, what I could have said better, and all the sorts of things that run around in one's mind after an interview. I noticed a small toad hopping into some undergrowth, heard and saw ducks and an anhinga (fresh-water cormorant relative) on the pond, and saw gulls, pelicans, and a sandpiper sitting on pilings, along with a couple of cormorants hanging their wings out to dry.

When I got home, I had an email from my daughter hoping the interview had gone well, and telling me about the pumpkin spice latte she'd had at work. I thought, "Hm. Don't I have a recipe in my collection for that?" Sure enough, there in my SparkRecipes was one for Pumpkin Spice Latte. My version cuts the calories in half by using almond milk instead of skim milk. Here it is:

1 c Almond Breeze almond milk - 40 cal
1/2 c strong coffee. I used DandyLion Blend, an herbal coffee substitute - 10 cal
1/2 t pumpkin pie spice
1 T pumpkin - 5 cal. Mine wasn't canned; it was the last small one from the garden.
1 packet Stevia

Delicious for only 55 calories!

289 breakfast
269 lunch
105 snack #1
477 dinner
42 snack #2

Ooooh. I've been craving the Starbucks version, which I just can't have (at 548 calories, it's a bit extreme). Thank you, I'm gonna try this!
