Thus far

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

My first week was a success: I shrank by 0.8 lb!

Refinement--something I've done in the past: Sunday is my day of rest. I need not track anything that day. Knowing that I'll have this break makes it easier to keep up with tracking on the other days.

It felt super-good to deposit $25 in my online savings account at week's end!

Something new: I baked a spaghetti squash on Sunday & combined Trader Joe's marinara sauce with tofu cubes & extra thyme & oregano to go over it. I know some folks love pasta so much that they can't bear to substitute stringy squash for it. But I really enjoy the slightly crisp squash texture--& I love recording that I ate a whole cup of it & seeing just 42 calories on the tracker!

Me too - I LOVE squash instead of pasta... it's one of my favorite fall and winter dishes. And yours sound super healthy with the tofu! I haven't made any tofu successfully thus far.. I need to keep trying.

How you doing, by the way? The new year treating you all right??

So great! Good job!!! I have never tried spaghetti squash, because I'm not much of a cook, but it sounds lovely!

Congrats!! Absolutely with you on the spaghetti squash, though I admit I don't "expect" it taste it like pasta. I expect it to be a yummy alternative.

Shrinking in the new year

Saturday, January 05, 2013

Happy new year & merry 12th day of Christmas! (Or 11th? I always thought January 6 [tomorrow] was the 12th day, but when I count starting with December 25, today is the 12th. Must investigate this!)

My main 2013 goal is shrinkage! I don't wish to have a smaller life or to take up less psychic space in the world, but I need to shrink my body a bit to get back to feeling like myself, & I also need to shrink debt. Here are the steps I'm taking.

I'm going to return to my travel-savings reward system, updating it to address my current concerns. I'll put $25 into vacation savings each week if I've accomplished these three things:
1. exercise 150 minutes/week
2. eat within recommended calorie range that week (or shrink on the scale!)
3. do something proactive to reduce debt--e.g., make good progress on a freelance project, refrain from eating out

Comments:

1. I'll favor the 28-Day Bootcamp & (just ordered) Total Body Sculpting routines, as they combine cardio, ST, & balance & really burn calories. I'll do one of those at least twice a week, alternating with outdoor fast walking or indoor Leslie Sansone routines (which I beef up by including jogging intervals if they're not already included).

2. I'm going to nest an extra motivator within this goal: I find tracking very time-consuming, especially because housemate & I cook from scratch & don't always follow recipes. Plus I already know the calorie content of most of the foods that I eat on a regular basis. BUT I need to track to get myself back on track. emoticon So after a couple of weeks, as long as I'm continuing to lose weight & bodyfat, I'll get a break from tracking. But any week that weight or bodyfat increases, I go back to tracking.

3. I have joined SparkGuy's Savings Jar Club, & earlier this week I put together a budget. It's hard to quantify paying off debt on a weekly basis, as I am paid monthly at my full-time job & thus make credit-card payments monthly rather than weekly. And my freelance jobs ebb & flow, & so does the promptness of payment (e.g., I'm still waiting for payment of an invoice I sent out Nov. 15!--it's a long-term client, a university, so I know I'll get paid eventually). That's why I have left this goal open-ended--it will serve to remind me of other ways I can increase savings & reduce debt. I will carry a notebook & log everything I spend day to day, & I'll periodically compare my budget to actual income & spending to make sure I'm on track. This year I intend to go out to eat even less, but invite friends over for dinner more often--that will save $$ but increase festivity!

Ideas are welcome!

Great ways to blend your goals together - the budget and the food/exercise. You'll do well as you keep your goals in view through the year.

Ruth, you are such a smartie! I need to come see you soon. I am having a bit of a hard time adjusting right now, so hanging out would be really nice.

I set up a Success Tracker spreadsheet for my goals. I'm doing okay with it, though yesterday and today haven't been great...I've been taking on a lot of extra part-time job hours, so I run out of time on weekends to do the things I should be doing. But I'm making money, which helps shrink my debt (also on my goal list)!

I can't wait to see how 2013 turns out for us both. =)

btw - I celebrate the 12 days of Christmas too (because it's much better than just one day!), and the count depends on your church history. We consider tonight the 12th Night, and tomorrow the Epiphany.

Wish I could write a long post

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

This is kind of a placeholder blog to say that I'm still here & thinking hard about how best to manage my health & fitness in the coming weeks/months. I ended the fall 5% challenge with ignominious failure, forgetting even to record my final weight, which had gone up a tad again.

But of course that's not the end of the story. I have done plenty of exercise thus far this week & have been eating the way I should. I'm thinking that the best strategy for a while will be to challenge MYSELF instead of depending on team challenges that are sometimes extraneous to my goals & schedule. (But I still love you, Starfishies!)

The photos from my recent quick trip to Colombia for my brother's wedding remind me of wonderful, sweet, hilarious, nurturing times--but also remind me that I still need to lose a bit of weight & tone up. One of my inheritances from my mom is chubby upper arms. I won't ever be able to make them look trim & toned; they just refuse. But they can be a bit trimmer than they are now!

I'm going to work on it. More soon.

In the meantime, here's my so-happy-to-see-you reunion with my daughter, who lives in Colombia:

And here I am with niece, brother, & sister, pausing in the midst of a delicious hike through a nature park on the side of a mountain:

    Your photos are gorgeous!!!

And the 5% challenge was a mess for me, too. I started it higher than I'd ever been, and finished it even higher than that.

But you are still gonna Starfish next time, right???

New hair!

Friday, October 26, 2012

I had been thinking about this for a while. Last weekend when I was in St. Louis I finally did it! Cheaply, at a Great Clips, but I think Ronda did a great job.

And just for fun, here's a last-weekend photo of my granddaughter! She LOVES taking walks with her dad every day, & she picks up sticks & carries them along. So adorable.

I love the new 'do! And I've never had a bad haircut that cost less than $20....I always get the worst ones at the $40+ places.

Your grandbaby looks a lot like you in that picture! I love it!
