Please help Haiti

I have never been to Haiti, but I know that when I get there someday I will fall in love with it.

It's so sad to hear & read about the effects of the earthquake in this the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere. I am planning the January 17 service at our church, & of course we'll be raising special prayers for Haiti. We will also be giving special offerings for the work of Mennonite Central Committee there:

Sore waist-area muscles

This weekend I was REALLY sore in my sides & back in the waist area. That doesn't happen very often, & for a while it perplexed me . . . made it so hard to bend over that I felt old!

But it meant I had to always bend at the hips instead of the waist, & that's much better anyway.

On Sunday I finally realized the reason: doing the Leslie S. videos, I had been turning my torso very energetically with all the marching & kicking steps. My sore waist proves that those muscles really do engage when I make that twist!

Now that I know, I am continuing to twist but a little more gently, so that I can build up my strength instead of punishing myself. emoticon

Leslie will serve me well for a while

Picking Leslie Sansone's 5-mile workout from among her many walking-workout DVDs was a smart choice for me. Tuesday night I did the first 2 miles; Wednesday night I repeated those & added the 3rd; this morning before work I did the 4th.

I really like the variety of steps & of core & arm movements. Each mile just flies by. I DON'T care for Leslie's patter, but this morning I found that I could follow along just fine with it turned almost all the way off while I listened to the news on NPR.

The movement segments are short enough that they don't bore me or wear me out. And as I get stronger I can intensify my movements so I still get a good workout.

When I came to the "boosted walking" (two minutes of jogging at the end of each mile), it felt SO good . . . & I found myself nostalgically remembering the running I used to do. I'm so glad to have a little bit of running as part of my new routine.

Yesterday I was down another pound. Today I sneaked a waist measurement--down 3/4 inch already! Gotta love the bootcamps, even though I'm a bit sore. It's GOOD soreness.

    I have come to really like Leslie's dvds, but started out really annoyed by her chatter as well. At least one of my dvds has the option of muting her voice while still broadcasting the music! : )

I did finally get over the irritation and now just put it on and go with it.

    I hear many people who like her tapes really well. I have an OLD VCR tape of hers from way back when, before her last name was Sansone and it was called Walk Aerobics - I too HATED her yapping and her laugh drove me INSANE! I used to turn it down and play my own music, LOL!

Have fun with this bootcamp, it sounds like you are though.

As in two pounds down. Yay!

And yesterday I officially graduated (again) from physical therapy. My left arm/shoulder's range of movement is MUCH greater than it was when I started. I will be continuing the stretches daily; the upper-body strength training I'm doing twice weekly in the current bootcamp will also help maintain my shoulder's healing.

The dreaded stats

For the bootcamp, I was supposed to post these beginning measurements yesterday. I did take them yesterday, but I wasn't organized enough to post then.

I have never posted my measurements publicly before. Gulp. I'm glad you are all so sweet & encouraging. These measurements are in inches.

waist 34
hips 43
upper thigh 25
chest 32.5
bust 38.5
neck 13.5
upper arm 13.75
wrist 6.75

I especially hate to see my waist that large. At my comfortable lower weight of a few years ago, it was around 29-30. So that's something to work toward. It's not normal for it to be larger than my chest!

I'm motivated to get these numbers down via the bootcamp strength training--& of course through eating right & doing my cardio.
