Yuck.

Saturday, October 20, 2007

It's a beautiful day in Chicago--sunny & unseasonably warm, nearly 70 F--but I feel yucky & grumpy. My cough just keeps going & going. I didn't have a sore throat before, but now I have one just from hacking.

So on Monday I'm going to call & see if I can go in & see my doctor on Tuesday. The irony is that I just saw her less than two weeks ago for my annual checkup! I was in the first few days of my cold then, & Cold-Eeze was keeping it minor. The dr. even approved giving me a flu shot. I just didn't seem sick. Now I'm wondering whether the flu vaccine made me sicker (so that I have the cold-symptom flu, which hangs on a LONG time? or maybe bronchitis, which I've never had in my life??).

I did go out to do errands in my neighborhood on foot today. Because of the cough I didn't jog; I just walked fast. My energy is pretty much shot now. Hopefully I can rouse myself to do just a bit of strength training later, after I do some work at the computer & before I shower.

I would really love to get back to my normal good health!

I know you'll get back to your "normal health" soon. It seems when someone has a prolonged cough, it becomes a vicious cycle. The cough irritates the throat and the throat irritates the cough, and the cycle goes on and on. Drink a lot of liquids - and some warm liquids before going to bed. I also think sometimes a person needs a good cough suppressant, to give it all a rest so the cycle will stop. Maybe your doc will prescribe one. Thanks for all you do for our team even when not feeling well.

Ruth, I'm so sorry that you still aren't feeling 100%. I'm glad you've made an appointment with the doctor, maybe she can prescribe a cough medicine strong enough to kill it. Enjoy the beautiful weather again today. I'm proud of what you are doing even though you don't feel well. You are a great team leader and an inspiration.

It's a beautiful day here in Las Vegas too. 82 degrees and slight breeze. I'm glad to hear you're finally going to visit the doctor. I'm finished with my antibiotics now - it was one of those Z-paks, six pills that work for ten days or something, and I'm starting to feel better. I've had flu shots make me sick in the past, so if you were under the weather when you got it, it's possible you were made sicker by it. My doctor refused to give me my flu shot Monday because I was sick... she didn't want me sicker.

God, you have not been feeling well for quite a while now. I think it is probably a good idea that you see the doc. I'm not sure if the flus shot can actually make you sicker but it sounds reasonable to me. Hang in there.

Buffeted by weather

Friday, October 19, 2007

Yesterday when I left work to catch the train, it was storming. I keep an umbrella in my commute bag, so I opened it up right away, but when the rain is being driven nearly horizontally by strong winds, the protection is minimal. My legs & bags were soaking within a minute. With other passengers, I waited inside the entrance/exit shelter by the tracks till the rain mostly stopped--but its roof is in sad need of repair.

Downtown I went through an underground walkway to stay out of the weather between trains.

When I got home, I peeled off sopping shoes & socks & put on warm slippers before eating a quick snack supper. Then I made some popcorn & tea, changed into my PJs, & spent the rest of the evening in bed reading.

This morning I was dressed warmly enough--except that it hadn't occurred to me to wear a hat or scarf. We had gusty winds again, quite chilly, & my ears got really cold while I waited for the train. Then the train was slow enough that I missed my connecting train & had to wait for a bus instead--& downtown it was raining, & a woman came into the bus shelter with me & lit up a cigarette! I said something to her politely, & she said OK, but I don't think she snuffed it out.

All that to let you know, I do have bad days as well as good ones! Oh, & Paula, I'm not a morning person either! But I have to do my exercise in the morning because I don't want to take the time to shower twice in any given day, plus I'm usually working on a freelance project & often I need evening time for that. Time is a constant challenge.

BUT I'm happy to report that I got 8 hours of sleep AND got up for strength training this morning! I did an upper-body workout this time. Tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful, so I'm hoping to get in some core/lower-body exercises tomorrow morning as well as going out for a jog.

Hearing you talk about public transportation is like hearing you talk about a different world. I wish we had reliable, decent public transportation out here in the west. We rely so heavily on our cars it's ridiculous. It's a necessity to own at least one, if not two cars here. And the expense of owning them is outrageous. But, I'm off topic. Sorry. You're doing awesome, running and catching your trains and buses everyday is incredible exercise. I can pinpoint when I started putting on the excess weight - when I got a drivers license. I stopped walking everywhere I went.

What a deal

Thursday, October 18, 2007

I've lost another pound--which brings me to 8 pounds in a month! The focus & camaraderie I've gotten through SP are making a BIG difference. Thanks teammates!

Last night I was working feverishly on a poem, & then I had conversations with my husband & stepdaughter that kept me up past my ideal bedtime. So no strength training for me this morning. However, I rushed between trains even faster than usual on my way to work, & I'm going to count it for cardio because my heart rate was definitely elevated!

Writing a good poem, walking briskly, & losing a pound--these things make me feel really, really good.

You're doing so well, Ruth. I'm totally not a morning person, and never get up early to exercise. I agree the support from SP is great - it keeps me focused and accountable, and gives me ideas and insight. Keep up the good work.

A day of near-misses

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

I woke up around 3:00 worried by the realization that I had forgotten to pay a bill that is due today. But I calmed myself by deciding that since I was getting up in time to exercise, I could take a few minutes to pay the bill online. After that self-talk I was able to go back to sleep! That in itself was an achievement.

Then I did get up shortly after my alarm started buzzing. I paid the bill--including an express-payment fee, but that's better than a late payment. Then I did two full sets of my core & lower-body strength training exercises.

I left to catch the El (elevated train) a few minutes before I usually do. But then it was even slower than usual--there's construction in several places. If it had been just 30 seconds slower, or if I had take a little more time walking from one station to another, I would have missed my second train. But I caught it--yay!

And whew!

Been there. I pay my mortgage on line (with the extra $8 fee) just to bypass the lockbox at the bank. Glad to hear you are feeling well enough to get your training in. Don't envy you on the El - I took the A train every day when I lived in NY. I do have to say I prefer it to rush hour traffic in the car. Good thing I now live less than 8 miles from work.

Gotta love those online bill pays. I pay virtually all my bills online. I think the only exceptions are my rent and my doctor bills - those are the only checks I write anymore. Everything else is online, or debit card at the grocery store or wherever I'm shopping. I keep myself "cash poor" so I'm not tempted to buy things I don't need. Yeah, it's easy to whip out the ATM card and buy things too, but I don't for some reason. If I could just keep my husband out of the 99 cent store we'd be better off. It's only Wednesday, and he's hit it twice already this week. Argh! And he buys snacks that are bad for me when he goes, so it's doubly frustrating. He innocently says, "But I know you like them." Congrats on the work out this morning.

Thank god, sometimes waiting for those trains is crazy. And with all that construction they are doing, it's a wonder any of the brown or red lines run! Good for you! You got your workout in this morning! I just finished mine too!

The Challenge is a challenge!

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

Well, we shall see whether I can complete the weekly challenge. Morning is the only good time for me to exercise. Sunday night I got to bed a little late, & I didn't feel too great as I got up Monday morning. Last night my bedtime turned out even later, because my only time to speak by phone to my husband in Colombia turned out to be 11:00, & we had a lot to catch up on so I didn't get to bed till 12:25. To have time to exercise, I need to get up around 6:25, & that would have just not been enough sleep.

I am feeling just a bit better today, though, & I don't know of anything that should keep up me late tonight. So here's hoping that I can get in some weight training the next three mornings! You're not supposed to exercise the same muscle group two days in a row, so I will probably alternate upper-body work with lower body & core. Then, if all goes well, I'll still have Saturday morning for jogging--& I SHOULD be enough over my cough to be able to enjoy it!

I hope.

Above all - take care of yourself - get plenty of rest. There are some good ideas for strength training that can be done anywhere. I saw some of the video clips on sparkpeople (were using therabands), and then there's always the wall push ups. But again, take care of yourself. So glad you were able to talk to your husband.

Just listen to your body. Don't over do it. You don't want to still be sick next week!!! That would not be fun! i agree, could you do leg lifts and bicep curls while on the phone? that seems awfully productive to me!

Hey Ruthie - I hope you're feeling better and that you were able to get in some exercising - I'm sorry to say (for me and my team) I haven't done any strength training as of yet. Today I had to walk the dog as she hadn't had one since Sat. and there'll be no time tonite for either. I have no idea what strength training exercises are - and I did a search entering those exact words and only got articles that didn't look like they answered my questions. I'm hoping to do it tomorrow, Thurs & Fri (switching upper and lower, I know THAT MUCH but that's it).

But I'm glad for the challenge or I'll never do anything but my long aerobic walks -

Will your husband be home soon? Is that where you both are from?

Hugs, and thanks for dropping by blog the other day. Geez I'm busy these days with all this added into it - but I've lost another pound so far this week!!

blessings and get well!! (er),
Robin :)
