Vegetarian delights

Monday, October 15, 2007

I'm not a complete vegetarian, but usually the only meat I eat in any given day is a slice of turkey at lunchtime. My son became a vegetarian early in college, when he was still living with me, & now my stepdaughter is living with us & she's vegetarian. My husband & I are both happy to eat vegetarian dinners every night at home (except for the occasional night when we grill organic chicken in the backyard . . . yum).

Last night my son came for dinner & brought the main dish: curried chickpea soup sprinkled with chopped cilantro. I had made my favorite chop salad (similar to the traditional Israeli salad recipe in the SparkRecipes files, except I omit cucumber: mine has tomatoes, celery, green pepper, a little green onion, fresh parsley, 1 t. sugar, 1/2 t. salt, & 2 T. lemon juice). I also steamed asparagus & then topped it with mushrooms sauteed in olive oil. We had whole wheat pita bread & a little hummus too. And the night before I had made dessert, whole wheat gingerbread with some almonds & walnuts, which we topped with a little whipped cream.

YUMMMMMM! It's so great to be really enjoying food WHILE losing weight! :-)

That sounds good. I'm not vegetarian, but am leaning toward eating more vegies, and not missing meat. I've had the same feeling - like what I'm eating and not missing the foods I've given up.

Trudging along

Sunday, October 14, 2007

This morning when my alarm went off, I had had nearly 8 hours of sleep, but I still didn't feel well enough to get up & get ready to go to church. I turned off the alarm & slept another two hours. My son & maybe my daughter are coming for dinner at 5:30, & there's still a little cleanup to do before then, but mostly I'm taking it easy today. I've been reading & drinking hot mint tea with lemon juice & honey.

It's important that I go to work tomorrow, so I'm hoping that taking care of myself today will mean I'll have energy for that.

I'm happy that this past week I've lost 2 pounds--& a total of 7 since I started sparking nearly a month ago!

cough, cough

Saturday, October 13, 2007

I'm really not coughing that OFTEN anymore, but it's way down in my lungs so it's painful. I did my exercise, third time to complete the weekly challenge (yay! she says feebly), by going out to do some errands on foot this afternoon. Now that I'm home, I'm super tired & have asked my stepdaughter to fix a light supper for us whenever she's ready, so that I can read & rest for a while. I need to do laundry--otherwise I won't have clothes to exercise in this coming week!--but it will have to wait an hour or two till I recover a bit of energy.

Hopefully you will have a cough free day soon. i'm sure you're sore from coughing, I know I get sore. Just take it easy. I can't believe you got your 3 days of exercise in! That's an amazing triumph!

Hey girlfriend, I'm so sorry you're still under the weather. Remember, I was housebound for 8 straight days, I had it so bad. My lungs are also still filled with the crud - it's so bad. I'll be praying for you to have a speed(ier) recovery ;) but I wanted to suggest something to you which has helped me over the years.

A long time ago a Dr. told me (when I had this same type thing) to milk my lungs 3x/3 x day. Now, let's see if I can explain this without sound effects. It means to push air through the lungs (and diaphragm?) hard - as if you were saying, "HUH?!" really loud. If you needed to bring some of that crud up, you would do this action. And when and if you do it, it may or may hurt (depending on your level of congestion). But if you do 3 deep breath lunges (I'll call it) and don't necessarily try to bring anything up - you're just trying to break it up, get some clean oxygen in there - and loosen it up. Do this 3 times thru-out the day. You will notice a marked difference within 2-3 days - I promise.

Well, I'm on day 13 and I'm feeling really pretty good, it's just the nose blowing (my poor lil' nose is raw) and the cough. I've been able to get my 3x's of exercise in (thank you God, praise the Lord) because I was frightened I was sick just long enough to lose that drive I had for exercise. But I prayed about it every day and as soon as I could - I was out there!! I'm going now, even tho it's kinda cool and rainy - I'm not made of sugar, so I won't melt (no matter how much sugar made my hips by passing thru my lips haha) and I can bundle up for warmth.

I have to do some shopping, too - so I best git! Listen, if your weight loss slows from this cold (mine sure did) have no fear - I lost 5 pounds this week and I still have til tomorrow!!! So, don't worry - I think our bodies hold onto everything while we're sick, just in case we need it later (if we didn't get well), know what I mean? So - you get well, soup still sounds like the best meal to me, too - tho I love soup all the time - winter, summer - and my favorite these days is that old diet cabbage soup, but I add northern white beans for extra fiber. I tell you - I could live on that stuff - if only it had fruits and grains in it!! heehee (I know, I know, then it wouldn't be that soup - and it would be yucky!!).

Glad you have your stepdaughter to help you today and for the company, too! Just do the laundry you need - leave the rest and take good care of yourself!!

With hugs, :)

Stimulating work

Friday, October 12, 2007

I am staying home today because I need to recover from this nasty cough. I'm still in my jammies right now as I work at my computer, & I plan to take a break in midafternoon to do some exercises with weights. (Determined to accomplish the weekly challenge despite my illness!)

There are times when I become especially aware of how very much I love my work, & this is one of those moments. I'm a book editor for a university press (that goes with the vocab you noticed, IWILL175! heehee), & right now I'm working on a book about music's role in social life. The chapter I've just started is comparing the way the leaders of Nazi Germany used music to get Germans enthusiastic about the Nazi regime & the way the U.S. civil rights movement used music in the 1950s and 1960s. Isn't that a fascinating topic?! I am so blessed to get to read & think about stuff like this as part of my WORKDAY.

I am very thankful for good work, & I'll be praying that my Spark friends who are looking for their own good work niche will find it soon.

Of course my work keeps me quite sedentary throughout most of the day, so Sparkpeople is really important in reminding me to take time for exercise!

music as well as the arts are so important and enrich our lives. As a creative thinker, I'm so glad that we had music in the school systems and theater was offered, and you could be in the school chior if you wanted to. I don't know what I would do if i had to go to schools where the arts were cut out.

I love your stubbornness even though you don't feel well. take it easy with the exercise, don't over do it. We want you to get healthy, but getting over your cold first is more important.

My job keeps me at a desk, too. I do full cycle accounts receivable for a company that makes circuit boards. The only exercise I get most workdays is yapping my jaw or walking to the printer. Don't get me wrong - I really like my job too. Hope you are feeling better.

Music is a great motivator, it can deepen our moods, good or bad. That book sounds real interesting. It's cool you can work from home. I'm glad for you. My husband gets to work from home when he's sick too. He's a computer nerd. Poor guy is on call 24/7 though, it's tough on us sometimes. Glad you're getting your exercise, just don't overdue it. Hugs.

Ruth, what a wonderful gift for you to be able to say you love your work so. That's a blessing not many can say. My DH is blessed that way - and so am I when working (I'm blessed not to have to right now!) tho there are gifts both ways!!

That book sounds fascinating - and I tell you - I love music and there aren't any other words to describe how much I love music!! I grew up in a musical household, my dad - 82 in Dec. is an entertainer and he still entertains 3-4 days a week!! I'll tell you more about him as time goes by - he's my daddy, and I love him dearly not to mention how proud of him I am.

thank you for your comments on my blog - I'm a little embarrassed becuz I didn't gain an ounce but know if I don't get my tooshee out there and exercise today, it could show up tomorrow. You are right about everything - and I did get an idea from our captain about carrying around a healthy sweet dessert or snack for when we go away and there's the threat of danger :).

Thank you again - I really got down last night. But thanks to SP and friends like you - (and the scale!!) - I'm a success today no matter what I did yesterday.

Blessings on you,

In answer to Paula: the book has been accepted for publication, & I'm doing sentence-by-sentence editing to fine-tune it before it is typeset & printed. The process takes awhile, so the book won't be published/available till mid-2008 or so.

That sounds like an interesting book. Is it published, or being reviewed prior to publishing (I don't know much about your business, but sounds very interesting). I'm sure you learn a lot about so many different things in your business. I love music - all kinds. And now that you mention it, when I hear music it does remind me of times and events - like "We Will Overcome..." - Martin Luther King. I love my work, as long as I don't get too much of it.
Hope you're feeling better.

A sentient dishrag.

Thursday, October 11, 2007

That's kinda how I feel today--except a dishrag doesn't have lungs & a deep cough. My exercise this morning was going to be jogging to the pharmacy to buy a new bag of cough drops! But I slept quite poorly last night, so at 5:30 a.m. I got up to switch the alarm from 6:30 to 7:30. Felt headachy & crummy when I did get up. Then my first morning train had to slow way down because of track repairs, so I missed the connection with the second train. Took a bus instead, & got off a few blocks from the office so as to stop in at a grocery store to get cough drops, without which my day would be exceedingly painful. Got to work nearly 45 min. late, but I felt as if it was heroic to arrive at all.

It's good to be able to take care of a few urgent little jobs that were awaiting me, but my neighbor in the adjacent office stopped in to commiserate because she heard me coughing. We agree that I really should stay home tomorrow--I'm so lucky to have the kind of work that can be done from home!

Oh--I have lost another pound. I'm not starving myself or anything; my meals continue to be balanced, & given how many cough drops containing honey & "glucose syrup" I've been ingesting, you'd think I would be GAINING a bit of weight! But apparently it's not enough to counteract the careful, conscious eating that Sparkpeople & the Chispa Chicks are helping me maintain.

Though a bit limp & bedraggled, I'm thankful.

I HATE feeling miserable. I was where you are just last week and the week before. This bug is going around. My dad is now fighting it. Take it easy tomorrow, don't over do it, and keep yourself hydrated!!!! Rest and fluids are most important. Congrats on the pound loss during the cold! That's hard to do!

This is probably a really poor blog comment, but may I say YOU HAVE SOME VOCAB!! I will be honest, if you didn't use "those words" in such a way in your sentences I wouldn't have a clue what they mean. Makes you interesting - for someone who doesn't know you. : )
Good job on your pound and I pray that though you have tomorrow off just in case - you feel fantastic!!!
love ya!!
