August 10-16 reward plan

Monday, August 11, 2008

I almost forgot to set up my rewards for this week!

Last week, again, I managed to exercise only three times, & I didn't stay within my calorie range every single day. I took only some of the rewards; one I'll roll over to this week. For sure this is helping, though; without it I might not be exercising or tracking at all!

MONDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Track food & stay within my range.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Bake the chocolate-beet cake--& then figure out how to give most of it away (I can freeze five pieces to take to the family with the new baby on Sat.).

TUESDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Track food.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Take a short walk around the neighborhood if the weather is still delicious.

WEDNESDAY
Get up in time for strength training.
Track food.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Burn a good-smelling candle in the bathroom while I clean.

THURSDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Track food.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Spend time browsing to identify good books & put them on my library hold list.

FRIDAY
Get up in time for strength training.
Track food.
Bed by 11:30.
Reward: Eat breakfast on back porch.

SATURDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Bed by 11:00.
Reward (repeat from last week): Write a note to a few new friends from the June workshop.

An amazing August

Monday, August 11, 2008

I wish August had been amazing for weight loss--but actually I've been forgetting to weigh myself. What has been amazing is the weather--the coolest, most beautiful August my husband & I can remember in Chicago. So far the high temps are hovering around 80 F, & there are delicious breezes.

It's great running weather! I went this morning--Mondays are turning into happy days for me because I'm managing to get up & run pretty consistently. Which casts a glow over the rest of the day.

The managers of my current freelance project want me to take a break until they have a chance to confer & make some decisions about style & organization. I'm not sure how long they're thinking, but I definitely welcome a break! Let's see--ironing tonight, living-room cleanup tomorrow night, bathroom cleaning Wednesday, party planning Thursday (that's for our music & poetry garden party, coming up Aug. 29--I have a lot of RSVPs to answer & need to make a list of foods/beverages to get/make) . . . Yes, I could fill up quite a few evenings with bits of life that have been neglected while I focus on this huge project. We shall see how it works out.

Ruth, I am not that far from you here in KY... wish those temps were here too, especially the cool breezes! It is just humid and muggy here..

Sounds like you are busy as always... take care and you make running sound so good, I may have to take it up someday! :)

Life's goodness wins

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

I did have reasons to be a bit discouraged, but I just didn't manage to stay that way. emoticon I did get up & go running on Saturday & it was just delicious. I got only about half the editing done that day that I wanted, but sometimes that's just the way it goes. I used basil from my back-porch plantings to make pesto for supper that night (I had never made it before!), & our meal was really special--yum. Sunday morning I was the worship "host" at church--keeping the service moving along, providing transitions--& though there were challenges it turned out to be a beautiful service. We enjoyed the monthly potluck on the lakeshore afterward, got in a nap that afternoon (which didn't disrupt my sleep that night), & that evening we went to a friend's private screening of some very moving film footage from Colombia.

And Monday morning I went running again, a few minutes longer than usual, & that made me feel great. I was out quite late last night (caught in a near-tropical rainstorm part of the time!), so no running today. But I'm still feeling cheery. It's hard to stay down when I'm getting good exercise . . .

So here's my reward plan for this week, which I put together Sunday.

SUNDAY
Rest.
Attend private screening of Diegoís film.
Get to bed by 10:45 at the latest.

MONDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Track food & stay within my range.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: See The Judge & the General.

TUESDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Track food.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Wear the coral top.

WEDNESDAY
Get up in time for strength training.
Track food.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Eat breakfast on back porch.

THURSDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Track food.
Bed by 10:45.
Reward: Make mussamun curry (D hasnít had my version yet).

FRIDAY
Get up in time for strength training.
Track food.
Bed by 11:30.
Reward: Eat breakfast on back porch.

SATURDAY
Get up in time to go running.
Bed by 11:00.
Reward: Write a note to a few new friends from the June workshop.

Ruth, I love your planning and goal setting. I may give that a try. How did that week go?

I read about the film viewing on the team website. It sounds very sad, but powerful.

You're inspiring me - I need it. You're the best!

Down in other ways

Friday, August 01, 2008

Time has been tight this week. I've had to stay up late a couple of nights working on Things That Need To Be Done--thus less exercise. But I haven't actually gotten any freelance work done, which is my big looming obligation.

So I'm struggling to keep a good perspective & not lose heart. If I manage to get up early & go running tomorrow before the heat hits, that will help a lot & will mean I exercised three times this week--not too bad. And then if I can hunker down & mow a large swathe through my freelance project, I'll be extremely encouraged.

We'll see how it goes.

You will do it Ruth, I know you will!

BTW... I know you forbade me to read... haha, but this is during a time of feeling OK. I cannot sleep 24/7, it makes me sore.

Down another pound!

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

I went running yesterday morning . . . As I ran I was thinking about how amazing it is that I am able to go 2.5 miles without slowing to a walk. I was slim when I was young (except for two years when I was 10 & 11) but NEVER athletic. PE in junior high, high school & college was mostly torture--except when it was folk dance, which I've always loved. Running laps was excruciating. Being a runner was alien to my self-concept.

But in my mid-40s I decided to start exercising regularly by walking briskly in the morning. After about 9 months of that, I noticed that when I saw someone running I was thinking "That looks like fun." So I started adding slow jogging to my routine--just short intervals; I'd slow back down to a walk whenever I felt the need. I built up very gradually to running for a full half-hour. Now running is in the "fun" & "I can do it" columns for me. Amazing & true.

I LOVE to see heavier persons jogging or running. I know it's a real effort & reflects dogged determination to get healthier.

My recent efforts have brought me down another pound as of this morning--yay!

Wow. That's inspiring. Right now I can run for about a minute before having to stop. I'll keep trying.
