Errands & exercise

I slept another full 8 hours, & because it was Saturday I let myself drowse for an extra hour. SOOOOOooooooooo delicious! I'm very thankful.

I had errands to do today. I live in a very "walkable" neighborhood (on a Google "walkability" scale it scores 88 out of 100), & the things I had to do were all within walking distance. So, as I often do on Saturdays in good weather, I combined my exercise with errands. I have a shoulder-sling bag that has a compartment for my keys, reading glasses, cash, debit card, ID & other small items, & a larger zipped area to carry purchases or books. I put a smallish tote in it for groceries.

Jogged down to CVS, bought several things, which all fit in the sling bag. Then I jogged to the grocery store (making a bit of commotion because I had two glucosamine-tablet containers in the sling bouncing/rattling as I ran).

I wanted to buy yeast. Couldn't find it in the aisle with flour, sugar, spices; an employee directed me to aisle 7. There I could see more baking supplies--but they were all in an Eastern European language! That's the kind of neighborhood I live in--I love it. Fortunately as I was puzzling over the items, a woman started browsing items in that section, & I asked for help. She pointed me to the cute little individual yeast packets. Turns out they come from Bosnia-Herzegovinia! I love it. And I think it's hilarious that the store carries Bosnian yeast but not Fleischmann's or Red Star. :-)

I also bought a few more items. Now I was weighed down a bit too much to continue jogging, so I walked home at a fast pace. I've spent a good part of the afternoon baking rolls to take to a dinner party tonight--& I also made yogurt, for the first time in many years! I really hope it sets.

    Sleep is SSOOOOOOO important. I try as hard as I can to get a consistent amount every night. I usually get between 7 and 8 hours. And I love love love being able to be a little lazy and stay in bed for an extra bit, although it doesn't happen too often. Like you I live in a town where pretty much everything is accessible by walking! I just need to do more of it. I'll admit that one thing that holds me back are some of the homeless people. They can be quite rude...ah, but such is life outside Chicago! Have a great day!

After I was off my insomnia medication for two weeks, my body was very out of whack. Even after I started taking the pills again, I had lots of nights with early-morning insomnia. Morning is my only time for exercise--beyond the fast walking that I do every weekday between trains in my commute--so it was not happening: sleep is more important right now.

Last night I went to bed at 11:00 & was able to stay asleep until my alarm went off at 6:30! What a blessing. Even then I lay in bed for a little while, having an internal discussion about getting up or not. I ended up getting up & getting 25 minutes of resistance training (including warm-up & stretching). I feel SO much better today.

One way I make morning exercise easy for myself: each night I put out BOTH clothes for the next day of work AND exercise clothes/shoes in the bathroom, where I get dressed. I am not a morning person, so this eases my transition from sleep into exercise.
