Arm Update

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

I had a doctor's appt today for my wrist. They took 3 x-rays and the bones are mending good, better than any of us expected without surgery. I have a follow-up on Dec 20th.

I'm still on pain meds but the dr said that will lessen as the swelling decreases. The pain, he explained is from his molding the cast to force the tendons to remain taut while the bones mend so the tiny bones in the top of the hand don't shift toward the wrist.

I can deal with the pain, it is the inactivity that drives me batty. emoticon I am used to being more active!

My thanks for all the prayers.

Today is my emoticon.

A lot has happened in that 3 months.

I am living a healthier lifestyle, not a total veg yet but working on it. I feel better each day about the positive changes in my life.

I am getting more exercise, even if it is just a walk. On rainy days I go to the mall and window shop so I can get my steps in without getting soaked or blown away by wind.

My weight loss has been slow but consistent. The first 15 or so dropped quickly but I have done enough "dieting" in my life to know that it is normal to hit plateaus in weight loss.

I am not on a diet this time around, reading "The Spark" taught me that much. I am making better life choices. I want to be around for my great grandkids.

I managed to break my arm and see the good side of it. emoticon I see a chance for growth even in adverse situations. The arm doesn't need surgery, so this too is a good thing.

Finally... ...Today is a good day. I weighed in an found out I lost another 2 pounds.

Update on Arm

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Had a follow-up with the dr today. They took x-rays and found that I will not need surgery. The break is healing and is 3/4 the way to normal. There will be a little dis-figuration but nothing that will keep me from having full use of it. The splint was replaced with a short cast - I chose purple - and I have a follow-up next Tuesday.

Just read your blog about year arm. I can't believe than you broke year wrist.
I broke my baby toe at the beginning of July. Because of where it broke (at the joint where the toe attaches to the foot) and osteoporosis it took my 12 weeks in a cast and 6 weeks of therapy. I hope you heal faster than me. Maybe if I do it again I will just cut it off emoticon. Healed great and I have full motion now. emoticon

I will be semi-out-of-commission for a few days, maybe weeks.

I fell and broke both bones in my wrist at 7:30 last night. On the up-side, it is my left and I am right handed.

By the time we got to the hospital, I was in shock. One nurse, maybe she was doing her first ER part of training, missed 2 veins for the IV so a different nurse got it in on the 1st try. The x-rays showed a clean break,so hopefully I won't need pins which means 2 surgeries.

I'm getting fuzzy from the meds, I'll update in a day or so.

Thank you for your concern. Yes it did hurt a lot but I guess going into mild shock helped to suppress it a little.

The doctor and nurses were surprised that the bones didn't shatter and that it is a clean break. They used suspension weights to realign the bones ans then while the weights were still holding the bones in place put a splint/soft cast on it. Not before the morphine kicked in, though.

I have an appt with an ortho specialist tomorrow.

I'll keep everyone posted here.

Dang - that's gotta hurt! Way to go on finding the silver lining of being right-handed; I'm not sure I would have been able to focus on that as pain meds kicked in. Take care of yourself!
