First Bad Headache in Months!

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

DH arrived at the rehab health center yesterday in North San Diego County. The paramedics were amazed at how nice the facility is; actually they said they had never seen such a nice place. Apparently the primary area they work in lacks what they referred to as "nice" facilities. That is sad.

I joined DH for dinner in the evening. It has been the nearest activity we have had approaching being back to "normal" since April 18th. DH definitely felt like he was now getting into "Phase II." He is now quite eager to proceed with rehab.

Yesterday and today he has spent a lot of time on the phone discussing ongoing projects at work. The rehab center has received 3 faxes specifically for him (from work) so he could speak in concrete terms of the work construction.

The rehab center allows pets to visit so I took Penny today to see her "daddy." Once Penny Dog realized what was going on, she was thrilled. I placed her on DH's bed and she proceeded to "kiss and hug" him right and left. She also "sniffed" his injury. Dogs are capable of smelling injuries and illnesses. After she was assured her "daddy" was alright, she relaxed and just plain enjoyed the "reunion."

We did not stay long since FINALLY I cried a little and expressed my relief to see DH feeling much better; I pleaded that he not roller skate anymore. Thank goodness, he had already made that decision for himself. Whew!....

I returned home to nurse the beginnings of my first major headache in a very long time....In ONE hour it was gone. That is another first for ME! I believe this is part of becoming a stronger person by pursuing a healthier life style through SPARK.

Making sure I am drinking my water (I suspect I may have been a little under my water intake for the week in hospital with DH). Suspect the headache a culmination of stress and not enough water and exercise (Sleep and eating was fine). Back on board the day I returned home but the previous week finally caught up with me. All is well now.

I have so many people to thank for their continued support. I believe the best way is one big spark email which I have yet to compose. I hope everyone understands that I am doing double duty right now so I feel like I am treading water.

And Tiny Tim said, "God bless each and every one of us."

Sincerest Regards, Rusty

You are keeping things together very well. I agree that your time her on Spark has helped you. I'm glad the headache was gone soon and it probably was a culmination of all you've been through lately.
I watched my mother and father go through a situation similar to your current one many years ago. Although dad was the one injured and in the hospital, I now understand that it was probably harder mentally on my mother. She tried to be everything for everyone and keep things running smoothly. She ended up run-down, exhausted, and ill. Take care of yourself throughout all this!
I pray things continue to go as well as they have so far for you and your husband.
Stay positive,

Broken Hip, Pretty Bad

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Sunday, April 25, 2010
I have just finally arrived back home. The incident took place one week ago (Sunday, April 18, 2010) at a roller skating rink. My DH had a very bad fall and broke his left hip; actually the femur about an inch or 1 1/2 inches below the femur. I was at home and received a call from him at the emergency room at the local hospital NINETY MINUTES from our home! The following is what I wrote to focus on the task at hand.

Sunday, April 18, 2010
As I sit in my husband's hospital room, I am reflecting on my (our) blessings of which there are many. First I need to explain my DH's reason for being in hospital....He broke his hip roller skating. Actually he broke the left femur just below the femur ball but they still refer to it as a broken hip.

Now for the Blessings:
1) I was at home when the call came.
2) DH was able to place the call himself.
3) We had a friend to drive me the 90 minutes it took to get to the hospital.
4) The hospital was 2 miles from the roller rink.
5) My DH was alert and we talked so I have the necessary details.
6) We have good primary insurance and also secondary insurance if required.
7) My friend and I went to the roller rink to get DH's car. Friend then went home.
8) Friend taking care of Penny Dog until tomorrow when Penny Dog can be boarded.
9) Surgery is tomorrow.
10) DH is resting quietly.
11) "I am woman...I am strong"

I will report later on how it goes after surgery .
Please remember us in your prayers.

Hi Rusty, I'm so sorry to read this, I hope he is on the mend by now. As you know, the end of the school year is a whirlwind and my Sparking has been sporadic. I'm trying to touch base with all my special sparkfriends! I was thinking strongly of you yesterday as I was digging through 23 years of my predecessor's school stuff in my classroom. I moved in in January and never had any time to sort and pitch. My archeological dig even turned up some materials that belonged to HER predecessor!!! Thankfully the air conditioning in the building is strong and I probably have one day left before I cover everything and lock up for 2 months. Hope you're treating yourself well and that you are progressing toward your vision of you for that reunion! My prayers to you and DH for healing! Hugs, Kim emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

We did have to buy side bars for the toilet so I could get on and off, and I rented a "knee scooter". I assume you will have similar expenses and adjustments to make. I even had to sleep on the couch for a month because I couldn't get up the stairs. But, we survived, and you will, too. You are a strong woman!

Rusty meets First Lady Michelle Obama!

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Okay, all of you have been asking for pictures of me.... How about The First Lady of the United States and me? Yes, I met and shook hands with our First Lady Michelle Obama at a function in San Diego having to do with her two-month old program "Get Up and Move!" My daughter invited me to attend with her; it truly was an honor. Mrs. Obama and I spoke about 30 seconds which was also a thrill. She IS as beautiful as her pictures.

Me? I am now in size 14 pants with a belt cinched around my waist. (Same pictures are in my picture file with the help of my daughter.)

I apologize but I can't say any more right now. I am exhausted and wish to spend the reminder of the evening with my political minded daughter. She is an advocate of education...very good, VERY good indeed.

Good night, sleep tight! And as Tiny Tim said, "God bless each and everyone one of us."

Fence Installation - Unfortunately NOT MINE!

Tuesday, April 06, 2010

I am very behind in touching base with everyone on spark. Haven't been blogging much. Been out there in the backyard or somewhere. Today I am hanging close inside to the backyard. Neighbor decided to have her backyard fenced in with a "privacy fence." NO one is looking into her backyard but she feels she wants her privacy. Me? Well....I questioned her SIX FOOT fence between us and since we are in a planned senior community, the architectural committee chairperson was able to reason with her that a FIVE FOOT fence might be a little bit more friendly between us. Heaven knows I can't see over a five foot fence since I'm 5'1". And DH is seldom sitting in the backyard after a long day at work; he wants to enjoy the sun room, a soft couch and his TV.

So why am I hanging out at home? Neighbor took off and left the two guys high and dry for a rest room! Having grown up in the country I learned early to be of assistance with workers who are performing a contractual job for you. I really only have to think about the shared fence but I DO worry about those guys. It is a warm day, provided both of them two bottles of gatorade and crackers. They had plenty of water and food but they gladly took the extra liquids and snacks. Also I know the fence on the shared side will be the correct height.

Yes, I have yet to get my fence installed. It will be only four feet high. We have bidders coming later this week. Nothing more to say there.

My Spark Personal Challenge?
1) Lost 11 pounds total so far.
2) My bras feel so much better.
3) My T-shirts feel so much better.
4) Just about ready to dig out my one size smaller pants. HURRAY!
5) Much, MUCH easier to tie my shoes.

I say, slow and steady wins the race.

Hugs and Prayers to EVERYONE who keeps nudging me along. Couldn't do it without you!

SHOCK to my thinking. Oh me!

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Dang, durn, darn, blast it all! (This blog was for Monday, March 29, 2010)

Most of you know I enjoy working outside now that I have the time for it. I began by trimming the Italian Cypress trees, went on to two of the tall bushes by our house, have done a little bit of the hedges surrounding the perimeter of our back yard. Began a 4x4 sq ft mini veggie garden. Yadda, yadda.

Well, we also know we need to install a fence in the back yard for Penny Dog's protection. Of course, first we need to get an accurate measure of the property line. We have a hunch where it is, but one does not install a fence without accurate information. Anyway, as I was starting to trim more of the hedges, I realized they are so overgrown, the outside edge hang WAY over any potential property line. emoticon Do you know what that means? I DO KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS! emoticon They either need to be trimmed on the back side WAY back...or shock of SHOCKS, I need to rip them entirely out! emoticon

SOOOOO, today I started by trimming them way back, particularly on the back side. If they can be left in, the fencers need to be able to work around them. emoticon If they need to be taken completely out, I have begun the process. emoticon Oh brother, there is a lot to be done. emoticon AND I don't want to have to pay for any of the trimming, I am capable of that. BUT if they need to be removed, I don't want to have to pay more than I have to; again, I am capable of doing some of the work myself. emoticon

Look out you hedge bushes, I am coming after you. And you BEES just leave me alone....(I had to promise the bees that I'll put in something better that they will really enjoy, dwarf fruit trees - ultimately 3 of them).

So yes, I have had a little shock, aaaah, a BIG shock regarding this project. All for my Penny Dog....AND since I'm at it, told my DH that on one side of the property line where there is a four foot incline, I would like to have a sloping brick retainer wall installed. Now that gave my DH a SHOCK! Tee Hee. emoticon Might as well spread the "joy" around.

I guess this is not so bad. I'll get PLENTY of exercise and time outdoors with all of the activity.
All because almost two years ago, we told my daughter that we would take care of Penny Dog for..."awhile". Ha to THAT!....We LOVE our little Penny Dog and actually told my daughter that she could NOT have Penny Dog back.

I am pretty darn sure I have had my quota of exercise today - 5 hours of work.

Good night, sleep tight, Rusty emoticon emoticon

What a great idea! You have done your exercise plan and your home improvement plan at the same time. Not to mention a little menu planning, with the fruit trees and veggie garden. You are an expert multi-tasker. I know how you feel about that little dog we have our own "Daisy" and we just love her.
I put in 2 4x4 square veggie gardens and planted onions, lettuce, radishes and cabbage so far. Thinking about adding another square since I have some materials left over. This is my first square foot garden. Keep on keeping on.
