I saw this on CNN, and laughed so hard, I think I burned 43 calories. Here's a link to the story.
Here is the only part worth paying attention to.
" The study on the loss of vitamins and nutrients was conducted by the Institute of Food Research on behalf of frozen food giant Birds Eye. ".
Imagine that! The frozen food people did a study, and found out that frozen food is better than fresh.
Sadly this is exactly how we do studies today. A group feels the need to show a study that proves whatever they are doing is awesome, and they pay some scientists millions of dollars to prove their theory right, and of course, the results back the theory 100 %. The problem is, these people are scientists, not morons, and they know that the funding will disappear if they do not get the right results. There is no incentive for them to find the truth. This is why we need to have public funding of nutrition studies, with no bias, and no punishment if the results are not what everyone expects. I think if we switched to a system such as this, we would find that all of a sudden, what is considered healthy, would change dramatically.
We aren't getting fat because we eat fresh veggies, instead of frozen, or vice versa. We are getting fat because of eating too many carbs, and especially those that are laden with sugar and salt, or are refined/processed. Where are the studies that might actually benefit Americans, instead of food manufacturers?

The past two years, I have been eating chicken from the Amish store, near where I live, and during the winter months have noticed that the chicken parts are smaller. In my house, we eat around 2.5 lbs of chicken daily, which during summer is 12 thighs, but now I am having to cook 16 thighs to get the same weight.
At first I considered that the chickens heard that fat turkeys were slaughtered in late November, so they started watching their weight, so the same disaster did not befall them, but now I am thinking it may have something to do with the seasons, and not a group of superfit chickens, doing 2 a day workouts, to prevent another Thanksgiving day massacre. R.I.P turkeys!
Anyways, in case you haven't guessed, I am cooking up 16 chicken thighs right now, and just ate breakfast. I did a 45 minute walk early, because the temperature is supposed to drop all day long. I got up at 6:30, and walked, and started Sparking when I got home. I weighed in at 192.6, which makes me happy. I am eating between 50-80 grams of carbs, and still losing okay, if not quite as quickly. I just finished my 4 XL eggs, and a cup of fresh organic mushrooms.
I have increased my carbs with vegetables, and fruit. I now am getting 9 servings of vegetables, and 1 of fruit daily. I am sticking to blackberries/raspberries and half apples for my fruit servings. If I had more money, I would nix the apples, but they are cheap. I upped my tomato consumption to a full can a day. My meals are now almost half vegetables in volume. It feels weird to be buying 14 cans of tomatoes, and 14 cans of green beans at the store, plus mushrooms, celery, and cabbage etc. Since I buy my chicken separately, all I buy at Aldi's is eggs, butter, beans, oatmeal, and vegetables. The cashier probably thinks I am some sort of vegetarian who can eat eggs.
My brother hated the cabbage, so next week, I will try zucchini, if I can find it. I saw cucumber, but not sure if it will stir fry well. The cabbage made his stomach upset. I liked it, but not willing to cook separate meals just to have some cabbage, especially when I can have my greens in a salad with olive oil and vinegar dressing.
I hope to be able to get to the library soon. I read all my books, and the ones my brother got too. I am on my 4th Ed Gorman book, because I have nothing else to read. I have some personal activities to do tonight, and then we have T.V. shows to watch, but by tomorrow, I need another 10 books.
Yesterday, I won a Spark exercise DVD, which I will get in 3-4 weeks. My bonus spin.
That's all that's happening in my life right now. Boring, but I kind of like boring..lol. Excitement is overrated, and usually involves an E.R. visit for me. Hope everyone is having a great day.

I decided to have cabbage today. 1/2 a head cooked in chicken broth with 6 chicken thighs diced, 2 T olive oil, and a can of diced tomatoes, split into two meals for my brother and I. So 1/4 of a head of cabbage each. This turned out to be a LOT of cabbage.
I woke up, went for my walk, and ate my eggs. I read some of my political mysteries this afternoon ( by Ed Gorman ). Then I cooked up lunch. I thought it might be a problem when I cut it up, because it was so much. I had cooked 12 chicken thighs, so I had a lot of broth left over, so i added oil, and all the cabbage, and bolied it for about 45 minutes, then added tomatoes, and 5 minutes later the pre-cooked chicken, and ate 5 minutes later. I used black pepper, and garlic powder, but when I tasted it, it needed LOTS of salt..lol. I ain't short of breath now, but it seemed like a lot to make it taste better.
Just to throw it in here. I lost another lb, and was 193.6 today, which made me happy.
After lunch my brother headed off to work, limping from his gout, and I took a nap. He is still at work, so the pain must not be too bad. Hoping he gets better soon. I woke up at around 8 p.m., and have been sitting here Sparking for a few hours. I was rubbing my chest ( itch ), and felt a bump on it near my right shoulder. It was squishy, so I went in to my bathroom, and shaved the hair off, so I could see what it was. It is a vein, but not like I have on my calves, feet, or forearms ( not biceps, alas ). This wasn't nice and smooth, like a string. This is like silly string, It is not straight, and looks weird. At least it isn't a cyst or something, which was my first thought.
I started thinking about how some people look worse when they lose the weight. I have a dent in my forehead that is starting to show up more. My brother says it is from him punching me in the head as a child. I wouldn't doubt it. Of course, I have a lot of loose skin, but I expected that. Can't do much about it. I need to lose more, so whatever is underneath the fat is going to be visible as i keep dropping weight.
Supper is green beans and more chicken. While my brother is having gout flare-ups, we are foregoing red meat, since he thinks it is a cause of gout. He drank Coke, and ate venison over the Thanksgiving week, and thinks both are why he is in pain. It's okay. I love chicken. Eating it 14 times a week is not a problem. We will be eating it at 1:30 tonight, but I am still kind of full from all that cabbage. I plan to watch Bones, and go to bed.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Not sure if this is true..lol. I am pretty sure the label on the bag is a complete fabrication. It says 23 g carbs, 15 g fiber. SP has the fiber in 1/2 cup cooked at 19 g carbs, about 6 g fiber.
Then I hear the " quick rinse ", isn't even cooking. It's just prep ( an hour ). I think I then need to boil them more, until tender, like pasta. Heard it may be another hour? I wonder if it will continue expanding as I cook. At what point do I measure them? The bag says 1/4 cup dry is 70 calories, but with the fiber being so far off, I have to wonder if anything is accurate.
At least I can cook multiple servings at one time. They are Great Northern beans, and were cheap, in case I ruin them..lol. I think cooking a batch will answer some of my questions, but if anyone has more advice, I welcome it.
I got the beans, and some peanuts. My brother ate the macadamia nuts at one sitting. I got one oz of them. Today I am at 196.0, so the scale is behaving. My week will be averaging about 75 grams of carbs a day, as long as I don't start to gain weight. I am hoping to maintain this level for a while, if I can. If I start to gain, I will just nix my snacks, so no worries there.
This week, I read Black Wind and Poseidon's arrow, by Clive Cussler, Year Zero by Jeff long, and Last Days of Summer by Margaret Maron. I am starting Sleeping Dogs by Ed Gorman today.. a political mystery.
I took an hour long walk today. It is supposed to be 40 all week long ( nice and warm ). Then i went grocery shopping by myself, and gassed up the car for my brother. I still have to do my " weightlifting ".. with 20 lb dumbbells, and resistance bands. Other than that I just need to watch the Pistons game.
have a great end of the weekend!

I have gotten down to 195.6. Today I am a lb over that, but I feel pretty good. We ate a lot of venison this week, so my brother is having gout problems. Hopefully in a few months that is behind him, as he continues eating like I do ( + oatmeal ).
I have kind of cut down on my protein this week, and upped carbs some. Instead of trying for some beans or something carby, in small quantities, I am just going to eat more vegetables.
I am still eating just over 2000 calories a day, but today I ate 63 g of carbs, 16 from fiber. This came up to 10 servings of vegetables, and 1 of fruit. That's a lot of carbs for me. To eat 100 grams of carbs this way, I would need to eat 15-18 servings
The reason for me cutting protein some, is I began to wonder if 30 % protein was too high. Plus, my brother seems to have a problem with higher protein.. even if he replaces my eggs with oatmeal. So instead of 6 thighs for a meal, I cut down to 4 ( about 7 ozs for each of us ), and added a lot of vegetables.
I had my usual omelette today with 1 cup of mushrooms for breakfast ( 2 servings ). Lunch was 1/2 cup onions ( 1 ), 2 chicken thighs, 2 T olive oil, 1/2 can NS tomatoes ( 1.75 ), and 1 cup mixed peppers ( 2 ). Dinner was a can of green beans ( 3.5 ), with 4 pcs. chicken, and 2 T oil. My snack was 1.75 ozs sharp cheddar, and 1/2 a granny smith apple ( 1 ).
The canned tomatoes and green beans are serving sized off the can, so the 11.25 servings of vegetables/fruit may be off a little, but it is still quite a lot of veggies.
Tomorrow I have at least 11 servings of fruit veggies again. I got 3 peppers for $1.29 at grocery this morning.. orange, yellow, and red. I plan to have some more with my mushrooms in my omelette tomorrow. I stopped by the pizzeria today, and got a huge salad with tomatoes, black olives, feta cheese, bacon, and a cup of romaine for lunch. I have some olive oil and vinegar dressing to use. I figured 4 T will be enough dressing. Dinner will be some chicken, olive oil, onions, and tomatoes. My snack will be 1 oz of macadamia nuts, and 1/2 a Granny Smith apple.
Not only have my carbs gone up ( 11-13 % ), so did my fat %. Sunday I eat 71.1% fat, and only 17.8 % protein. Saturday is 24.3 %, and over the 2 days, I still average 109 grams of protein, so I don't think I am too low. I cut the protein, because the meat I eat is becoming more expensive too. At 15 lbs a week, a 50 cent a pound jump is another $7.50. By cutting 1/3 of my chicken, I can save about $20 a week, and vegetables are much cheaper. I find myself stir frying them in oil though, so still getting plenty of calories.
I have to say that my lunch today was not only tasty, but a pretty dish. orange, yellow, and red peppers, with red tomatoes, white onions, and golden cooked chicken. A little green would have been more colorful, but I don't really like green peppers. They taste bland to me, compared to the other colored peppers. Maybe some zucchini next time?
So I am going to aim for 60 grams of carbs most days, and not get it from kidney beans, and red meat in my chili, since my brother think these may be causing his gout attacks. Instead I plan to get it from 10-12 servings of vegetables a day. Hopefully, it works out. I think it is delicious. I even got a sale on my macadamia nuts ( just $4.99 ), so I have 7 ozs of those to mix in. I have had some discussion about adding seeds to my diet, but I'll have to see if I like the taste. Eating seeds just seems weird to me. Plus I need to figure out what kinds they have available. I know they sell sunflower seeds, but does anyone else eat seeds? What kinds would you recommend?
Just thought I would discuss these changes. I am close to 30 lbs from goal weight now, and need to start thinking of transitioning to Pre-Maintenance ( the 3rd Atkins phase ). I am still looking for some eggplant, and may need to go to a fruit and vegetable market to find that, and some zucchini, which sounds like it might be good in a stir fry.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and is doing well this weekend. It's after midnight now, so the start of another great week!
