Some days, it's all worth it.

As some of you might know, I'm a HM instructor at one of the local Running Rooms here in Calgary. Some days, it takes everything I have to haul my butt out of bed on a Sunday to be there for my "students". I get tired, unmotivated and (gasp) lazy like everyone else but, on a good day, there are 20 people waiting on me to be the leader. It's not crucial that I'm there but knowing that I'm waiting on them gives them a sense of accountability. Just like knowing that they're there gives ME that same sense.
Anyway, each clinic member is expected to give an evaluation of the course. Most of the time it's the same old stuff but every now and then there's one that makes me happy to the point of tears. This time around, it's this one:

"Hi Penny

Looks like I will be in Edmonton next week. I know you wont be running Saturday so wanted to make sure (If I don't see you before the big race) to thank you for all that you have done for me and my running to date. As you know initially Charlene and I started out running together but as she progressed with her marathon training it out leagued me so I thought I would be running alone and undoubtedly that would have been the end of my running. Charlene suggested running with you and I'm glad she did. You and your group kept me motivated and kept it fun and I thank you for that.

Not sure what the future holds for me, I do want to continue to build on my distance. I am enjoying it so I'll keep plugging along.
I hope you realize how much you are changing peoples lives, making them healthier, happier,stronger both physically and mentally. Keep up the great work and thanks again.

I'm going to see if I can give some feedback for you. Not sure if I can since I am not an official member but will try and leave some feed back as a drop in. It's the least I can do.

    Penny - that's such an awesome tribute, and I was so surprised that it came from a man. I did not expect that at the end. It's so nice to be recognized, and especially on the days you need a little pick me up. Hope you keep that one near so you can refer back to it on any low day - it's sure to pick you up again!

    You do motivate people Penny... and you also have this "non-judgmental" quality about you as well. At the end of the day, I know that no matter what size you are, what shape you are in, you're proud of people for making healthy choices. If it weren't for you and a few others there is no way I could have seen myself coming back to LIC.

You're that little kick in the butt when people need it. You encourage & praise people. Those qualities make a good leader. And you're not afraid to admit when you're wrong. I also love the fact that you have bad days and admit to them. There are many people in your same position that try to make themselves appear perfect all over, that they never make mistakes, that they're never unmotivated.

Just know you matter to a lot of people. Including me!

My biggest fitness accomplishment so far?

I think that, so far, my biggest accomplishment has been running a half marathon. Second place goes to climbing the Calgary Tower's 802 stairs six times. They were both huge challenges and they both gave me the same feeling of pride when I was done.

I always tell people, mostly runners, that there are three kinds of people in this world: those that think they cannot run a half marathon, those that think they'll NEVER run a half marathon and those that want to but just need that final push... you know, "fence sitters". Anyone that thinks they cannot will not. Running 21.1 kms is a mental game and, if you've already told yourself that it's impossible then, well, it will be. My favourite kind of people are the "Nevers". Mostly because I was one. When I ran my first five kilometers I told everyone that was it, I'd never run anything more than I'd already had. Somehow, I got talked into a ten kilometer clinic and I finished saying that I'd NEVER run farther than that. I don't know when it happened or how but in January 2006, I signed up for my first Half Marathon clinic. In the following May, I completed the Vancouver Half Marathon in 2:45. Not my most amazing time ever but it laid the groundwork and, since then, I've run eight more. Now my time to beat is 2:08 Fence sitters are fun - usually all they need to see is the hardware. It's amazing what a little bling will do. emoticon

  You should be so proud of your accomplishments, I know hearing about your running adventures is what has helped motivate me to join the Running Room :)

Its way to early to tell if the allergies will let me do it but I'd like to think I'm closer to sitting on the fence then I am to the "never" type people.

Three days in...

Ok so it's now Wednesday and, so far, this week has not been stellar. I have been on my water (of all things) for two days. Technically, I hit on Monday but I should have had more in preparation for my Tuesday run. I hit my goal (6) for F&V on Monday as well but Tuesday, I didn't come close. Four servings. Bleh. And two of them were on my pizza. So I broke another rule: I had fast food.
Todays game plan is to get it all back on track. LOL, isn't it always? One day at a time, one meal at a time (who's sparksig did I see that on??) that's how I'm addressing this journey from now on.

Thankfully, I AM on track with my exercise this week.

  Its only mid week, you still have time! Just promise yourself no more rule breaking and and keep it up with the water and fruits and veggies :)

I've started keeping what my co-workers call my fruit bowl on my desk at work, I bring all my apples, pears etc to work on Monday so all I have to do is reach over and grab one all week long. Right now a red pear is looking delicious....I might just have to eat it :)

Just a little "boom"

Had a little boom tonight. I REALLY couldn't fight off my sushi craving. Sparks says 194 calories and then I had my ice cream sandwich (FINALLY) which takes me 292 over. Thankfully, I worked most of that off on the treadmill tonight.


Daily report -
Today, I consumed 1992 calories.
I burned 124 calories on the treadmill.
I scored 12/6 for fruit and veggies.
I got a 10/8 for water.

I'll be back at it tomorrow. I have all my meals are planned. My only "unknown" is the stir fry that Richard and I are going to make for supper. I don't know what he'll buy to put into it or even if it's going to be beef or chicken yet. We've already planned a post meal walk with Hughy, too. I'm taking him with because he doesn't want him to be alone while I'm gone. The rest of the weekend is devoted to quality time and I cannot wait. One of these days I'm going to have to tell him how head over heels for him I am for him. emoticon

  Sounds like you have a wonderful plan! Your little calorie overage doesn't sound bad at all, I so wish I could eat sushi! Way to go on the fruits and veggies!

Given that its a stirfry you should be in good shape to go with whatever he brings along, sounds tasty! Yay for a weekend of quality time, you deserve it :)

PS I know you are bringing some whoop a## to Monday's weigh in, its what will keep me on track back home this weekend!

    Nothing that you can't make up for. I've been thinking about sushi lately - it's definitely one of my weaknesses because I can eat a ridiculous amount... I'm working on it!
Sounds like you a have a GREAT weekend ahead of you! I hope you enjoy every minute of it, even if you can't count all calories exactly or go over by a little!

I stepped on the scale this morning. Considering I'm hosting a party for Mother Nature this week, I thought that I'd GAIN weight. I weighed in on Monday with my group and I was at 127 and today, I'm at 125. I've lost 2 pounds!! Now I really have the motivation to keep at it. emoticon

    Keep it up and you'll accomplish your goal in no time! Doesn't it feel good to shed those unwanted pounds........thanks for sharing. Others need to know it's not impossible. :)
