I am doing several challenges right now.
On December 1 I started the Advent study with Good Morning Girls, a free online resource for Bible studies, support. It's kind of like Spark People for women who want to make Bible reading a regular part of their life. It may be only a small amount of time that we have to spend, but it makes a difference. And getting support from other friends (groups online, Facebook, email, messaging) makes it so much easier to find the time to have quiet time and spend time in the Bible. The study is four weeks long and each week focuses on a different theme. Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace are the themes. If you want more info go to goodmorninggirls.org
On December 2, I started a challenge called 21 Days to a Hunger-Free (and Healthy!) Holiday. It is being done by Peak 313, a fitness website. (We have a group here on Spark called Peak 313) The challenge is to sacrifice something (let's say a food item like a sweet treat) and then share something (let's say a donation to a charity or volunteer time). The idea is to commit to healthy habits during the holiday season that also give back to a charity or cause of choice. More information on peak313.com
I also started the Black Friday fitness challenge done through Shape Magazine.
Jessica Smith, one of my favorite fitness trainers is making weekly videos. There are prizes and it is motivating to have the challenge and new workout videos. More information is available on http://www.shape.com/fitness/workouts/win-
I am continuing to work on my exercise streak. I had a long streak going before my car accident in October. I'm fine--no major injuries but I had to take it easy and give up running. Any time running is taken away from me, I kind of get discouraged. My chiropractor told me I could walk but I gave up and broke my streak. Now, I am committing to exercise daily. A walk, a run, a short video. Something each day.
I am training for my third half marathon. The holiday Half Marathon on December 14.
How is everyone's December going so far? It helps me stay motivated to find new challenges and group activities. I have been eating more (and less healthy) lately and my jeans are tight. Have to do some housekeeping in my diet. Fitness is back on track lately but my eating needs a clean up.
Hope you are doing well! Let's make December a great month!

My goal for the fall was to start working out before work. Getting my workout done early gives me a sense of accomplishment and pride.
I didn't like missing my workouts if I had to stay late, got tired, or had unplanned activities later in the day.
I had always been an afternoon exerciser. After work, I would stop at the gym on the way home and get in my workout. Or when I started working out at home, I would do them in the afternoon.
Long days sometimes resulted in skipping my workout, which I don't like to do too often...
I am a morning person...I like mornings. But I like to have a nice, relaxing morning. I like waking up, having breakfast, coffee...having quiet time...
But I didn't think I could wake up and exercise. That seemed too difficult to get moving and sweating in the morning.
I always admired people who could accomplish this feat.
And now, I can count myself among them!
In other news...
Over the past few weeks, I've been training 7th and 8th grade students after school as part of Students Run LA, an organization that trains 7th-12th grade students for the LA Marathon. So, on running days I workout in the morning and in the afternoon. I love running! And it's a BONUS workout!
I am enjoying the group. And I love sharing my love of running and fitness with the students.
I do dynamic stretching before we run. They are funny because they are so worried about how they look. I tell them not to worry about what they look like. Who cares if we look awkward!
Hope everyone is on track to reach their goals. What is a goal you have for the fall? Are you on your way to reaching your goals?

I start a fall workout challenge tomorrow.
Jessica Smith's weekly workouts and challenges have been keeping me motivated since I first found her and did her summer challenge this year. When the challenge ended I stuck with the workouts with her weekly class schedule.
My current challenge is working out in the morning. Last week I worked out 2/4 days and did some stretching the other 2 days before work. I also worked out In the afternoon. Started training students aspiring to run the LA Marathon. It's too soon to tell who will stick with the program. We have over 40 kids in the program and a limited number of spots. We will probably, run with 20-25 students who will complete the program and get to the marathon. We have a 5k, our first race coming up later this month.
Here's the program for my non-running workouts. I plan to do them before work. That's where the real challenge is....

This week I have successfully completed six workouts in the morning!
This used to be me...
But now I realize the feeling of getting my workout done is so much better than hitting the snooze button!
Yesterday I ran a 5k with my husband and it was his first race!
It was my first 5k race in 2011 and started my love of running and races. So it was special to run it with him this year.
Here's my schedule for the coming week. I'm following Jessica Smith's weekly class schedule.
Friday I will be going on a little vacation so my workout will not be the morning but I'll still get it done.
So, this week will be 4 morning workouts before work. And bonus workouts in the afternoon.
Monday, August 26th: Indoor Jogging (40 Minutes)
Tuesday, August 27th: Cardio Dance Sculpt (60 Minutes)
Wednesday, August 28th: Stride & Step (30 Minutes)
Thursday, August 29th: Total Body Resistance Band (30 Minutes)
Friday, August 30th: Sunset Barefoot Walk (30 Minutes)
Saturday, August 31st: Relax & Restore (30 Minutes)
Sunday, September 1st : REST DAY! Do some fun movement today
I start running with students who have signed up for Students Run LA, an organization that trains middle and high school students to run the LA Marathon. This is my third year with the program.
Have a great week everyone!

Can't believe it is already fall--well, school has started and I am back to work. I am oddly happy and joyful and positive at a time of year that can be busy and stressful but I am at peace and feeling good about this year. I am also consciously choosing to accept things as they are and rather than stressing or worrying about the extra class I'm teaching or the high number of students in my classes I am thinking that I am entrusted with these students for a reason and looking at the new class as an opportunity to try new things. So, as I see the numbers in my classes continue to climb, and continue to add new students, I am staying positive and going with the flow.
I am also signing up for new Fall Challenges!
They both start September 2!
The first is Good Morning Girls Bible Study. I've done 2 studies with the GMG and am excited about this one.
The second is Jessica Smith's workout challenge. Each workout will be 30 minutes or less and I love the variety and add my own running.
I have been working out this week in the morning before work. I have always admired those who can get up and workout before the day starts. I would usually do my workouts in the afternoons. But there have been some long days, late nights and I have had times when I missed my workout. Getting it done early has given me such a sense of accomplishment. I have to say I'm amazed that I have done it consistently this week. In the past I've done short (I'm talking 10 minutes or less) workouts in the morning but not consistently. I kind of thought I couldn't do a "real" workout early...but setting the goal, getting encouragement from Spark friends, and posting each day has given me the extra boost I needed to stick with it. I love the feeling and if I workout in the afternoon at the YMCA or run with my students (that will start next week!) that is a bonus workout and feels even sweeter.
Next week I start training students at my school for the LA Marathon (and many other races!) with Students Run LA.
Excited, busy, tired, and happy. Happy (Almost!) Fall!
