Running progress

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

So it has been a few weeks since I started training for my 5K and about two weeks since I got my new shoes. Everything seems to be progressing well. When I first started, my trainer had me running 5 minutes at a time with a 5 minute walk between. By the middle of the second running set my shins and feet would be aching. After yesterday, I had to stop once during the second set to stretch. I finshed the rest of the workout without any problems. I have increased my speed this week so I was drenched by the end of the workout but I felt great. Now I get to run into problems.

My grandmother passed last night. We were already planning to go visit my family over the holiday but I would have had access to a treadmill while visiting my dad. Now, that may not happen due to the funeral. I'm a little worried about what will happen if I don't get a training day or two in this weekend. Friday I'm going to get up early and at least get that day completed. My Saturday and the following Monday session may be in jeopardy, though. I might have to try running on the street (which is what my 5K is going to be anyway). I only worry because I've had the cushion of the treadmill up until this point.

Thought I was getting frustrated...

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

A few weeks ago I hit a revelation I've been weighing myself weekly (with the odd mid-week scale check). Since the beginning of the year, I haven't lost any weight. I was getting frustrated until my wife pointed out that my jacket wasn't so tight any more. Sure enough, it wasn't. Then I checked my other shirts. They were longer! A pair of workout shirts I had bought last year, which were too short and showed my gut, now fit fine. What happend. Fast foward to yesterday. I was getting ready in the morning for work and happened to look in the mirror. I was surprised at how much smaller I seem. I wish I had been tracking measurements other than weight since July. I'm sure I'd see some significant changes. I can't wait to buy some more new shirts for work since the ones I usually wear now seem to reach my knees.

Fantastic! I've decided to stop weighing myself for this very reason! My body doesn't drop weight easily, but the inches seem to disappear so quickly. I have a dress that I'm trying on every week to see how the fit changes...hopefully from far too tight to far too loose! emoticon

New Shoes

Monday, March 18, 2013

I've started training for my first 5k. I had purchased a pair of all-terrain running shoes from Kohl's. They are great for walking. The first pair I'd bought I wore the tread off I wore them so often. So I bought a second pair. Wrong choice. All-terrain shoes aren't really designed for running on a treadmill. They're more for slightly uneven surfaces (at least in my opinion). So my trainer sent me to the local running store. I bought my first pair of true running shoes. I've never spent that much on a pair of shoes. Wow. But they are great. Already I can tell the difference in my legs and feet after I'm finished for the day. I guess there are some things that really are better the more you spend.

Personal Trainer are really torturers in disguise.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

I've been going to the "gym" on and off for the last couple of weeks. I haven't been consistent because I hate getting up so early and would rather spend time with my kids in the evening. But when I go, I felt like I worked out fairly well. I did a weight circuit and then 10 minutes of cardio. The weights were set up by a friend my ours that is a personal trainer. Well.....she went to the "gym" with me yesterday. Apparently I haven't been working myself hard enough on the weights or the treadmill. She immediately noticed that I was not lifting enough weight. And the 12 reps she originally gave me were not enough so we increased them. Oh! And let's add three new machines to work muscles that already hated me for the treadmill. Speaking of the treadmill, don't just walk at 3.5 with a 2 degree incline. Hit that random button. Ha! Bet you feel that now. I did. And it felt great. I need to remember to take a notebook with my tomorrow so I can keep better track of the weights I'm lifting. By the time I get home I've usually forgotten and use the wrong weights next time. But I like having my own personal torturer when I'm working out. She keeps me in line.

I would suggest you start seeing our exercise from a different point of view, specially as a joy and happines activity, that would really give you better results since when you do what you love, you really enjoy doing it.

My First 5K

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

I've been saying for a few years that I wanted to run a 5K. I have finally taken a step toward that. After joining a "fitness center" (they don't want to be called a gym because gyms have "lunks"...) I remembered how much I enjoyed running before heart problems (which were just my body being cranky at running and nothing serious) sidelined me. Watching TV the other night I saw information about 5Ks for new runners/walkers. Long story short, June 15th is my first 5K. My wife is joining me as a motivation. We're also talking about a warm-up 5K (not running the whole thing or having a slower pace) in March. I'm excited and terrified at the same time. Now I need to get some new shoes so I can start training.
