6 Days Until The Disney World Half Marathon AND My Knee Is Acting Up...

Yes, you read it right!! Yesterday I ran 5 miles on the treadmill, my knee panged a little bit early on. So, I walked it out really good after I ran.

Today it went into the forties. After reading several SparkBuddies status' and blogs talking about running in sub zero weather (ok, maybe not, but, it sounded that way to me!), I decided to stop being a weenie and get out there. I actually loved it and got my mojo back - the treadmill has been so uninspiring!!

Anyway, my run outside is VERY hilly and that is where it went, well...downhill!
The lower left side of my left knee (not the knee cap) started hurting. As I ran I tried to analyze the pain. It was tied into my hamstring and shot down my left leg. Now, this is a pain that has slowly built up over a half year - even before I fell on my knee in August. The skin on my knee is still healing from that fall! Ironically, I fell one week before my first HM - the Disneyland Half! Now, here I am, 6 days before my third HM in Disney!

So, what's a determined girl to do?? I ran 2.5 miles, inhaled two Advil, quickly told my husband what was going on. He has tons of knee problems ( he is 6'3) and said I needed a knee compression or brace. I bolted to the running store up the street and bought two different contraptions. I then visited GNC (conveniently located right next to the running store!) and bought peanut butter flavor glucosamine & chondroitin chews! They taste gross but I am chewing them none the less.
Employees recommended them last week because my finger joints are swollen.
--- yes, I am turning 50 in May, going through menopause (sorry Spark man friends) and falling apart!

HOWEVER, I will go down kicking and screaming!!

So, anyway, I peeled the compression thingy up my leg, ate the chews and ran back out the door. Of course my husband didn't bat an eye...we have been together 26 years, and, let's face it...he knows better!

I ran 2.5 more miles. It nagged me somewhat, but, I didn't have to stop or walk like I did during the first 2.5 miles. I was jamming to my running music and enjoying my run! I ran the second half on pretty flat ground. Disney will be pretty flat so I will finish training that way. I walked Roxy 3/4 mile after and it didn't bother me at all.

I am going to visit my other chiropractor tomorrow to see what he thinks. The first one thinks it is my hamstrings. He said to strengthen my quads. I was doing good going to the gym to strengthen them until I got real busy two weeks before Christmas - hmmm, maybe I will work on those again this week.

If my knee is still acting up after the race Saturday I will get an MRI. I just want to make it through this Saturday!

Such thing to happen, right before the HM and right when you started to enjoy running outside...
Stay safe, listen to your body and take as much rest as needed, your health is the most important.

    That sounds like it was one tough workout by one determined woman. All the best on the HM. Hope you make it through Saturday without major problems as I'm sure you don't want to have to give up at this point. I do think there'll be some wisdom in getting an MRI done to see if you can find out more definitely what the problem is because you don't want to do more damage than what you already have.

    Perhaps icing it while you rest, or do you rest at all?!! I recommend getting that thing completedly checked out after your race! I mean, you don't want permanent damange that may stop you running altogether! Keep us posted and do take care!! Good idea for the brace. Sending knee healing vibes your way!

    Good luck with your HM! I love Disney. emoticon I went with friends in September for the Tower of Terror 10 Miler, as a spectator. I will be going back with that same group in November and I hope to run the 5K and then cheer them on in the Food and Wine HM. I hope you have a great race and your knee behaves!

Why Acupuncture??

For the past three weeks I have felt like crap. I was overwhelmed with first - thanksgiving weekend and lots of overnight plus some guests, hosting a staff party (complete with a really nice dinner, DJ, and gifts), then running our school's holiday show for 400 people, then overnight plus some guests for
Christmas and at the last minute - New Year's Eve! In the midst of this, the Sandyhook tragedy occurred. As a Principal, I had a hard time digesting what happened, running over in my head 50 million times what I would do. The day before the Sandyhook tragedy, we had the mother of an employee we had literally just fired, harass one of my Directors. We had the police come immediately and she was arrested, But, it did add to my racing mind.

So, I felt exhausted and then last week my joints in my fingers swelled and my arms grew sore. I felt depressed and couldn't seem to get enough sleep. I think my husband thought I was losing it!

I was tested last Saturday for Lyme Disease. At the time of the test my blood pressure was WAY up.

Last night I found out the test was negative. As I thanked God I reviewed my symptoms and wondered if it was my allergies. I still have a Christmas tree in my house - the symptoms have been occurring the entire time the tree has been there. And, we haven't had a real cold snap here - I am highly allergic to mold. But, what about my swollen fingers??

So, today I went to my chiropractor. He said allergies can cause all the symptoms! And, with me training on the treadmill, I may be leaning which would cause probs in my neck which leads right down to my hands!

So, I got adjusted and boy, did my back crunch! Then I got acupuncture for my sinuses, immune system, knees and lungs. As the day progressed my head cleared out AND I can hear again!! I will continue to feel better throughout the weekend. Tomorrow I will resume running!

It doesn't hurt to get acupuncture. I can't stand needles so I am being totally honest about this. And, I didn't have to take chemicals!

I am looking forward to being chipper again!!

And that is why I get acupuncture. If you go to a good acupuncturist, you will find it is an amazing thing!

On a more serious note (yes, I do get serious once in a while)... The Sandy Hook tragedy I think added to the anxiety of the holidays for many people. Bless you for the work you do.

    I have a friend who is married to an acupuncturist and they are big into Chinese medicine. They live 3 hours away, so I've been trying to arrange a visit where I could have a whole body acupunture to help with my grief and all my other issues! I'm hoping maybe I can make it up to Richmond on January 26! Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Glad the acupuncture helped because I was wondering how you would do the half marathon which is just around the corner when you're feeling so lousy. I am so thankful for complimentary medicine because it can make such a difference in our health. I haven't ever tried accupuncture but sure have benefitted from chiropractic. It's amazes me how a misaligned spine can present itself in a host of different symptoms throughout my body.

    I'm seeing my chiropractor 3x a week. I did something to my back just before TG and could barely walk. When I realised I could cry at the thought of walking an extra 2 feet, I went to the chiropractor again. I practically crawled in and managed to walk out. It's taken some time to get it to stay after being adjusted but I'm so much better it's unbelievable! I am so grateful I found some really great doctors!

    Glitter60 - if he didn't explain things he wasn't a good doctor, mine explains everything! I asked around before I tried one. My acupuncturist/chiropractor studied in New York City 25 years ago. I am sorry you had a bad experience.

Becky - I live on the water and we have had a very mild winter so there is mold everywhere. The past couple days I have been real itchy, too. That was what led me to start thinking about allergies.

then the guy gave me some herbs, but would not tell me what they were. i threw them out.

    I'm really glad that you're getting some relief, especially this close to your HM. I can't imagine trying to run (or do much of anything) while feeling that awful. Did you have any water damage in the house or at school when the hurricane came through? I just wonder if there's some hidden mold. Hopefully the culprit really was just the Christmas tree and/or the stress of your very social holiday.

11 Days Until The Disney World Half Marathon...

I have been training on my treadmill the last two weeks. It has been too cold outside (in the low 30's). I cannot stand the cold! A couple of days ago I ran 10 miles while watching a movie. There were so many commercials I walked two more miles when I was done running - just to see the end of it!

Today I worked really late, so I just walked 2 fast miles while watching tv.

Tomorrow I am going to do some quad work at the gym and run 5 miles on the treadmill.

The past couple weeks I have lost a lot of energy and am quite fatigued. My knuckles are swelling up and numb. Even my upper eyelids are swollen! It occurred to me last Saturday that I have symptoms of Lyme Disease so I went to an Express Clinic. I usually have low blood pressure and it was quite high when the nurse checked it. The doctor did a blood test and I am still waiting for the results to get back. If it comes back negative, I am going to go to my regular physician and get more blood work done. It may be high cholesterol or a thyroid problem or it may just be my allergies. I am highly allergic to mold and it is running rampid here. We have had a lot of rain and there is still a lot of fallen leaves in the area. I am running anyway even though I am exhausted. The only motivation I have to run at the moment is this HM next week. I am a pretty hyper person and I do not like feeling run down.

So, I am trying to get excited for the run. Escaping to a nice, sunny area with my hubby should do me some good! And, hanging with other runners is just what I need!

I did splurge quite a bit during the holidays, but hopped back on the wagon without a problem. I am tired of junk food and eating in general. I am happy the new year is here.

    Rest when you can -- you are rockin' it (I love the extra miles to watch a movie's ending, lol!), but keep it fun! There's no cryin' in Disney! :)

Kidding... you won't be cryin'... you'll be having a ball! So proud of you!

I have a page on my wall, torn from a magazine -- it's a full page ad for the Disney marathon, with a picture of a woman running by the castle, and Maleficient (as dragon) looming behind. It says, "Mile 11: Slay Dragon." Love it! And it reminds me of you all the time! Go get her, girl!

Party Is Over - Back to Business...

I had a blast the last week with visits and visiting family and friends. I didn't get to the gym or on my treadmill. I was so busy. I did enjoy 5 cookies over the holiday (yes, I counted them - they were delicious!) I actually bought a chocolate fountain and took it to two parties. I only enjoyed one chocolate covered strawberry! My weakness was red wine. I love it with a nice dinner.

But, my company left this morning so it is "back to business" - the business of being healthy through exercise and healthy eating.

So, right after they left I hopped on my treadmill and ran a Runners World 10K using my iFit Module. I ran it in 61 minutes. I am training for my third Half Marathon at Disney World in January. I am going to try to beat my PR - 2 hours, 6 minutes. I am going to volley the Runners World 10k and Half Marathon trainings for the next couple of weeks leading up to the HM. I am also planning on running the Baltimore Half Marathon map - it is a really hilly run and great for speed training. I am not sure if I will be able to run outside before the HM, it is in the 30's here. I do not tolerate the cold weather very well and do not like to run if it is under 50 degrees.

I had mixed emotions over the past week if signing up for this Half Marathon was a good idea. I knew training would be harder, due to the cold weather. I did not consider how busy I would be between work and the usual holiday hustle and bustle. Now that I have my schedule and "space" back and have run a 10K, I feel better about my decision. It did motivate me to hop right back on the wagon! And, I am really excited to check out the new "Fantasyland" in Disney with my husband, mom and dad. I am running the Disney Family 5K with my husband and mom the day before the HM. My husband confided that he keeps running 5Ks with me in hopes of starting to enjoy running. If Disney doesn't do it, nothing will! My mom has run several marathons and now runs everyday just for fun. We are all going to stick together for this race. I would love to see my dad run or walk it - no such luck.

Anyway, sorry if I rambled - must be the endorphins from the run! I am going to sneak out of work early and hit the gym for quad work on my way home tonight.

    I'm with you. No, no, no, not on the runs but it's back to business here again too. Decided a few days of fun was fine knowing I'd get right back on the wagon again afterwards. That's a real shift in thinking for me because before I had a difficult time getting back to healthy habits after the fun. Then I would choose to fail and you know the rest of the story. Tomorrow it's off to the gym followed by my aqua spinning class. So glad they are having classes for part of the holidays. All the best on your runs. Sounds like so much fun to have some family planning to participate in these events with you.

41 Days Until The Disney World Half Marathon...

I am so happy I signed up for this Half Marathon! I am now focused on my training. Yesterday, I ran 4.83 miles and then did quad/hamstring/ab work at the gym. I felt so good the rest of the day! It gets dark around 4:30 right now and these short days have been making me tired and lazy. This workout pulled me out of that slump! Today I ran a 5k. It was 44 degrees. I was so cold before I started, I thought I was going to shake to death! I honestly don't know how some of you run in twenty degree weather! Anyway, I ran it in 29.20 - my HM pace. This was a slow 5K for me. My goal PR for my next HM is in under 2 hours. My next 5K race is Friday night, so my goal this week is to speed it up. The weather is supposed to be really nice (going to be in 60's) until Thursday, so I will be running/strength training at lunch break this week. Hopefully, Friday night's race won't be real cold! My husband is going to run it, too.
This goal is also reinforcing good eating habits. Yesterday we went out to eat with friends at a Mexican restaurant. The group we went with loves appetizers! I didn't eat one drop of the appetizers and got broiled tilapia for dinner. I skipped the flour tortillas and had one glass of red wine. I ended up consuming 1013 cals for the day! Today I consumed a little more than 1100 cals. I ate an array of healthy foods both days and drank lots of water.
With the holidays quickly approaching, this goal should help me maintain!

    I think you may be way too under in calories too! I would've froze in 44 degrees too! The race sounds so exciting! The nighttime race is a little weird to me, especially this time of year! But, have fun and do your best!

It is interesting to me that you found 44 degrees unpleasantly cold - I guess it depends on the temperatures we are used to.
This morning it was 32 degrees when I ran, I put on my two warmer running shirts on because it was windy, and I found I overdressed : )
On the other hand I find temperatures above 70 degrees way too hot for running...
