Yes, you read it right!! Yesterday I ran 5 miles on the treadmill, my knee panged a little bit early on. So, I walked it out really good after I ran.
Today it went into the forties. After reading several SparkBuddies status' and blogs talking about running in sub zero weather (ok, maybe not, but, it sounded that way to me!), I decided to stop being a weenie and get out there. I actually loved it and got my mojo back - the treadmill has been so uninspiring!!
Anyway, my run outside is VERY hilly and that is where it went, well...downhill!
The lower left side of my left knee (not the knee cap) started hurting. As I ran I tried to analyze the pain. It was tied into my hamstring and shot down my left leg. Now, this is a pain that has slowly built up over a half year - even before I fell on my knee in August. The skin on my knee is still healing from that fall! Ironically, I fell one week before my first HM - the Disneyland Half! Now, here I am, 6 days before my third HM in Disney!
So, what's a determined girl to do?? I ran 2.5 miles, inhaled two Advil, quickly told my husband what was going on. He has tons of knee problems ( he is 6'3) and said I needed a knee compression or brace. I bolted to the running store up the street and bought two different contraptions. I then visited GNC (conveniently located right next to the running store!) and bought peanut butter flavor glucosamine & chondroitin chews! They taste gross but I am chewing them none the less.
Employees recommended them last week because my finger joints are swollen.
--- yes, I am turning 50 in May, going through menopause (sorry Spark man friends) and falling apart!
HOWEVER, I will go down kicking and screaming!!
So, anyway, I peeled the compression thingy up my leg, ate the chews and ran back out the door. Of course my husband didn't bat an eye...we have been together 26 years, and, let's face it...he knows better!
I ran 2.5 more miles. It nagged me somewhat, but, I didn't have to stop or walk like I did during the first 2.5 miles. I was jamming to my running music and enjoying my run! I ran the second half on pretty flat ground. Disney will be pretty flat so I will finish training that way. I walked Roxy 3/4 mile after and it didn't bother me at all.
I am going to visit my other chiropractor tomorrow to see what he thinks. The first one thinks it is my hamstrings. He said to strengthen my quads. I was doing good going to the gym to strengthen them until I got real busy two weeks before Christmas - hmmm, maybe I will work on those again this week.
If my knee is still acting up after the race Saturday I will get an MRI. I just want to make it through this Saturday!

For the past three weeks I have felt like crap. I was overwhelmed with first - thanksgiving weekend and lots of overnight plus some guests, hosting a staff party (complete with a really nice dinner, DJ, and gifts), then running our school's holiday show for 400 people, then overnight plus some guests for
Christmas and at the last minute - New Year's Eve! In the midst of this, the Sandyhook tragedy occurred. As a Principal, I had a hard time digesting what happened, running over in my head 50 million times what I would do. The day before the Sandyhook tragedy, we had the mother of an employee we had literally just fired, harass one of my Directors. We had the police come immediately and she was arrested, But, it did add to my racing mind.
So, I felt exhausted and then last week my joints in my fingers swelled and my arms grew sore. I felt depressed and couldn't seem to get enough sleep. I think my husband thought I was losing it!
I was tested last Saturday for Lyme Disease. At the time of the test my blood pressure was WAY up.
Last night I found out the test was negative. As I thanked God I reviewed my symptoms and wondered if it was my allergies. I still have a Christmas tree in my house - the symptoms have been occurring the entire time the tree has been there. And, we haven't had a real cold snap here - I am highly allergic to mold. But, what about my swollen fingers??
So, today I went to my chiropractor. He said allergies can cause all the symptoms! And, with me training on the treadmill, I may be leaning which would cause probs in my neck which leads right down to my hands!
So, I got adjusted and boy, did my back crunch! Then I got acupuncture for my sinuses, immune system, knees and lungs. As the day progressed my head cleared out AND I can hear again!! I will continue to feel better throughout the weekend. Tomorrow I will resume running!
It doesn't hurt to get acupuncture. I can't stand needles so I am being totally honest about this. And, I didn't have to take chemicals!
I am looking forward to being chipper again!!
And that is why I get acupuncture. If you go to a good acupuncturist, you will find it is an amazing thing!

I had a blast the last week with visits and visiting family and friends. I didn't get to the gym or on my treadmill. I was so busy. I did enjoy 5 cookies over the holiday (yes, I counted them - they were delicious!) I actually bought a chocolate fountain and took it to two parties. I only enjoyed one chocolate covered strawberry! My weakness was red wine. I love it with a nice dinner.
But, my company left this morning so it is "back to business" - the business of being healthy through exercise and healthy eating.
So, right after they left I hopped on my treadmill and ran a Runners World 10K using my iFit Module. I ran it in 61 minutes. I am training for my third Half Marathon at Disney World in January. I am going to try to beat my PR - 2 hours, 6 minutes. I am going to volley the Runners World 10k and Half Marathon trainings for the next couple of weeks leading up to the HM. I am also planning on running the Baltimore Half Marathon map - it is a really hilly run and great for speed training. I am not sure if I will be able to run outside before the HM, it is in the 30's here. I do not tolerate the cold weather very well and do not like to run if it is under 50 degrees.
I had mixed emotions over the past week if signing up for this Half Marathon was a good idea. I knew training would be harder, due to the cold weather. I did not consider how busy I would be between work and the usual holiday hustle and bustle. Now that I have my schedule and "space" back and have run a 10K, I feel better about my decision. It did motivate me to hop right back on the wagon! And, I am really excited to check out the new "Fantasyland" in Disney with my husband, mom and dad. I am running the Disney Family 5K with my husband and mom the day before the HM. My husband confided that he keeps running 5Ks with me in hopes of starting to enjoy running. If Disney doesn't do it, nothing will! My mom has run several marathons and now runs everyday just for fun. We are all going to stick together for this race. I would love to see my dad run or walk it - no such luck.
Anyway, sorry if I rambled - must be the endorphins from the run! I am going to sneak out of work early and hit the gym for quad work on my way home tonight.

I am so happy I signed up for this Half Marathon! I am now focused on my training. Yesterday, I ran 4.83 miles and then did quad/hamstring/ab work at the gym. I felt so good the rest of the day! It gets dark around 4:30 right now and these short days have been making me tired and lazy. This workout pulled me out of that slump! Today I ran a 5k. It was 44 degrees. I was so cold before I started, I thought I was going to shake to death! I honestly don't know how some of you run in twenty degree weather! Anyway, I ran it in 29.20 - my HM pace. This was a slow 5K for me. My goal PR for my next HM is in under 2 hours. My next 5K race is Friday night, so my goal this week is to speed it up. The weather is supposed to be really nice (going to be in 60's) until Thursday, so I will be running/strength training at lunch break this week. Hopefully, Friday night's race won't be real cold! My husband is going to run it, too.
This goal is also reinforcing good eating habits. Yesterday we went out to eat with friends at a Mexican restaurant. The group we went with loves appetizers! I didn't eat one drop of the appetizers and got broiled tilapia for dinner. I skipped the flour tortillas and had one glass of red wine. I ended up consuming 1013 cals for the day! Today I consumed a little more than 1100 cals. I ate an array of healthy foods both days and drank lots of water.
With the holidays quickly approaching, this goal should help me maintain!
