18 Days Until The Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Today was my long run day. I ran around the city of Newark, Delaware. I love running in Newark. I grew up there and am very familiar with the area. I mix it up every time I run it.

Today I ran two developments that are filled with big hills. I have learned that training on hills greatly increases my speed during races. Today it was 55 degrees when I started out. It was so nice - I didn't miss the humidity at all!

I also ran around the University of Delaware campus and up and down Main Street. I had to dodge several people on Main Street today since it ended up being near the end of my run. I decided to hit it first the next time!

Today I averaged a 10 minute, 12 second mile which was slow for me. I have been running slower all week. I am going to work on speed during my short runs this week. I am also going to get new running shoes. I recently bought new ones but I am not feeling 100 percent comfortable in them. They are Ravenna3's like my last pair, but something feels different about them.

I hope you had a great weekend!

Shoes make such a difference! Have you been able to get a new pair yet?

I'm excited about your next race. I wish I could say that I'm ready to run it with you, but the answer is definitely no. I tried to run with some faster friends last week (they don't do intervals) and it was an extremely discouraging experience. Hopefully someday, though!!

Great day...

Saturday, September 22, 2012

We met my older son for breakfast this morning. He has been going through a rough patch and is staying the weekend at our house. I managed to get a run in after breakfast. As I ran, I felt justified in never running again before I ate! I thought I was going to puke the whole way around! It was 82 degrees by the time I got out to run! I was going to run 4 miles but my stomach didn't feel up to it. Tomorrow I am running ten so I should be good. My next half is in 20 days. I want to beat my time of 2 hours, 10 mins.

Anyway, after I ran we (my husband, older son, Roxy and I) took the boat out in the Chesapeake. My son, Roxy and I floated in inner tubes for a long time. Then we all took naps on the boat. Then we met friends at a restaurant (on the water) for dinner. I am now totally mellowed out on my couch. I will be up at 6 AM ready to finish my long run in Newark, DE. It is supposed to be 50 degrees - YES!!

I hope you are having a great weekend!

I Signed Up for My Second Half Marathon and Dropped 4 Pounds...

Sunday, September 16, 2012

When I returned from my first half marathon (Disney) a couple weeks ago, I was so excited about running it, I decided I wanted to run another before I run the Disneyworld Half in January. I searched half marathons, and discovered the Baltimore Running Festival in October. Baltimore is only about 45 minutes from my house. I figured I was already in training mode from the last one so I might as well keep going. It happens to be one week before my husband and I go to Jamaica to celebrate our 25th anniversary - the training should keep me in good shape for the Jamaican beaches :) That thought was enough motivation for me to sign-up today!

Yesterday I got a lot of cleaning and all my Fall decorating done around the house. It took me all day to do. I now have pumpkins, sunflowers and haystacks all over the place. I love the color orange! It is nice and bright! My husband was at the Virginia Beach Air Show - it was nice to be able to do it on my own schedule.

I also weeded my vegetable garden. I grow jalapenos, habaneros, tomatoes, zucchinis and banana peppers. This was my lunch yesterday:

I found the cabernet vinegar at Marshall's (I love that store). Notice the breakstone's cottage cheese? I eat one EVERY DAY! It is my staple food. I love individual portion sizes - keeps me in my calorie range without guessing :)

For dinner, I enjoyed my zucchini, tomatoes and jalapenos with some grilled chicken breast. I saute it in pepper picante extra virgin olive oil, fresh ground garlic and red pepper, and oregano. I live on this dish all summer...

This amount will last me for three days. I had a nice ear of sweet corn along with it. Totally fills me up and is a nice healthy meal.

So, for two weeks I have been focused on losing the 6 pounds I gained this summer. I have been diligent about my calorie intake. I didn't go out with my friends to dinner as much. I also intertwined Nutrisystem with "regular" food to get me on track with the correct portion sizes. It is so easy to fall back into larger food quantities! Today I weighed myself and I had lost 4 pounds! Yayyy! 2 to go. I am going to keep loading up on all the great vegetables out there. I do eat A LOT of broccoli - I find that it is very filling. I always sub it for the fries when I go out to eat. I eat the broccoli first and then I don't eat as much of the other stuff.

So, I am hoping to take my son to the running store this afternoon. He has started running but is not running in good running shoes or socks. I want to get him off on the right start so he enjoys it. Not sure if we are going to get there - he has to watch the Raven's game first!!

I hope you are having a fantastic weekend!!

I just got caught up on all the blogs you've written since your half. I'm excited that you're going to do another one in October already. I hope you have at least half as much fun as you did at Disney! It's neat that it's right before your anniversary trip, too. That'll help you to feel more confident on the beaches for sure, especially since you're tackling the portion sizes again. Those meals look delicious, by the way!
P.S. Thank God for chiropractors!

I don't grow jalapenos, but I keep debating whether I should... I use them in so many salsas. :)

Ooh, you're doing the Disney World half? That looks like it's going to be an amazing weekend. I have to admit, I wonder what surprise it is they have cooked up for the marathon there at mile 20, since it's the 20th year anniversary... guess I'll find out later. :) I won't be ready for an actual marathon for a long time, I think!

My Knee and the Power of Chiropractics...

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

I decided to go back to the Chiropractor today to find out what he thought was wrong with my knee - the crunching I talked about in last night's blog. He said it was my quadricep and patella (?) having issues after I fell a couple weeks ago. They weren't in the right spot which was why I felt like my knee was slightly out of the socket.

Here's a picture for reference:

The quadricep tendon is the first red line on right, the patella is the next red line under it. The patella is supposed to be in the center of the knee.

He had me lay on my back and squeeze my quad real hard. He was applying pressure in different points and then, all of a sudden, I heard and felt a "POP" and was immediately fine and dandy after that! Yayyy!! He gave me some biofreeze to put on it, but, I haven't had to use it -- I haven't been sore at all.

And, now...I can run!!

Isn't Biofreeze wonderful? So glad your chiropracter was able to adjust your knee. It's worrisome when something just doesn't feel right.

Back to the Grind...What to do Next...

Monday, September 10, 2012

I have completed my huge goal of running a half marathon, so now what do I do?? Creating goals keeps me focused. I am thinking about signing up for the Baltimore Running Festival in mid-October. It happens to be the weekend before my husband and I go to Jamaica with my BFF and her husband. We are all celebrating our 25th wedding anniversaries.

Anyway, somehow, even with all of my training, I managed to gain six pounds! Please don't think it's muscle, it's not - it all went straight to my gut! And I know how it got there - too much wining and dining with family and friends! I did have a great time, but, now I have to cut it out before it gets out of control.
the Jamaica trip is great motivation!

So, I think signing up is a great idea - I only have one thing holding me up...
My SparkBuddies may remember me blogging about a pretty big fall while running down a blacktop road during a long run a week before the half marathon. I didn't see an acorn! I skinned my hands, knee, and elbow pretty bad (I am still healing from it - I wore bandages during the half to hide them in the picture - lol!)

Anyway, now when I bend and unbend the knee I landed on the pavement with it makes crunching noises. It is almost like my knee isn't in the socket right - sorry if I am grossing you out! It didn't bother me at all during the marathon and doesnt hurt, although yesterday near the end of a 3 mile run it felt a little sore. I am going to go to the chiropractor tomorrow and see what he thinks. I don't want to push it right now if something is healing. My husband said his knees have been doing that for years, I still think I should get it checked out since I fell.

So, that's where I am with it. I walked Roxy tonight and it didn't get sore or bother me at all. But, with all I have read I don't want it to lead to a big problem.

Sorry if I rambled - I am thinking out loud!!

I hope you have a good night!! Keep Sparking!

Sorry about the knee, it is a lucky miracle it didn't spoil the race for you!
It is wise to have it checked out, though.
Good luck to your new plans!
