Main Street Mile-A Family Event...

Sunday, October 07, 2012

Yesterday morning my husband, and two sons (24 and 21 years) and I ran together in the Main Street Mile (held in Newark, Delaware).

This race was monumental not only because the whole family ran, but, that it marks one year that my husband has been cancer free! Last year, my husband walked this mile which wasn't long after his surgery.

It also was the first time my 24 year old has been in a race - he started running two weeks ago. He is the shortest one of my three guys in the picture below. He loves his new running shoes and ran it in 8 mins.

My other son has run several races. He ran this mile race in 7 mins, 15 secs. Two hours later we found out he had strep!

We also had several friends who came out to race too. Most impressive was a friend who is starting to exercise and working on her weight. She has to lose about 100 pounds. She always comes out to cheer us on, but, yesterday walked the Main Street Mile. She came out and did it!

I was so excited by all of the above, I didn't realize until today that I completed another goal! Last year I ran this race in 9 mins 15 secs. Yesterday I ran it in 8 mins, 38 secs.

We all had a lot of fun!

How fun that you were all able to do that together! Maybe my family can be like yours someday!
I hope your son feels better soon! I can't imagine running that fast ever, but especially not with strep!

9 Days Until The Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon...

Tuesday, October 02, 2012

So, as I reported earlier, I found out that my upcoming HM has some hills. Yesterday, when I mentioned my upcoming HM to my gym's owner, he looked at me like I was nuts. I thought "oh, crap!".

So I ran a bunch of long hills yesterday. I came up to one long, very steep hill in a development. I got half way up and had to walk fast the rest of the way up. My goal this weekend is to make it all the way up.

Today it rained. I ran 3.5 miles at a 3. Incline for about half of it - on the gym treadmill. I then did some quad work - squats, leg extensions and leg ups.

Tonight I talked to one of my marathon ruining friends. She said she hasn't run this marathon but said she heard it is the hilliest EVER!

So, I am going from the flattest HM to the hilliest! I am going to take my time, get a nice pace going and go for it!!

12 Days Until The Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon...

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Got stuck at work every day last week - worked long hours do I didn't get out on my usual 3 - 4 mile runs. I did find out that this Half Marathon is very hilly. I am glad I train on a lot of hills! This morning I ran 5 miles of hills of various variety. I kept a nice 9.38/per mile pace. I plan on running this pace for the first 10 miles of the HM, then kicking it the last 3. I want to beat my last HM time of 2 hours, 10 minutes.

So, my plan is to keep running the hills. Monday or Tuesday of this week I am going to take a long lunch and run 10 miles around the City of Newark. I am going to clean up at the gym (conveniently located where I do my long runs) and then head back to work. My gym bag is packed and ready to go:)

With 12 days left I gotta get and stay focused!

Hills - a necessary evil. But you've got your superpowers -- you'll be fine!

Hills are good. Since I live in the mountains, all I do is hill work. For me, I have to go to teh local high school trak to do some flat work!

Your HM times are great. Hills build power. Good luck.

18 Days Until The Baltimore Running Festival Half Marathon

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Today was my long run day. I ran around the city of Newark, Delaware. I love running in Newark. I grew up there and am very familiar with the area. I mix it up every time I run it.

Today I ran two developments that are filled with big hills. I have learned that training on hills greatly increases my speed during races. Today it was 55 degrees when I started out. It was so nice - I didn't miss the humidity at all!

I also ran around the University of Delaware campus and up and down Main Street. I had to dodge several people on Main Street today since it ended up being near the end of my run. I decided to hit it first the next time!

Today I averaged a 10 minute, 12 second mile which was slow for me. I have been running slower all week. I am going to work on speed during my short runs this week. I am also going to get new running shoes. I recently bought new ones but I am not feeling 100 percent comfortable in them. They are Ravenna3's like my last pair, but something feels different about them.

I hope you had a great weekend!

Shoes make such a difference! Have you been able to get a new pair yet?

I'm excited about your next race. I wish I could say that I'm ready to run it with you, but the answer is definitely no. I tried to run with some faster friends last week (they don't do intervals) and it was an extremely discouraging experience. Hopefully someday, though!!

Great day...

Saturday, September 22, 2012

We met my older son for breakfast this morning. He has been going through a rough patch and is staying the weekend at our house. I managed to get a run in after breakfast. As I ran, I felt justified in never running again before I ate! I thought I was going to puke the whole way around! It was 82 degrees by the time I got out to run! I was going to run 4 miles but my stomach didn't feel up to it. Tomorrow I am running ten so I should be good. My next half is in 20 days. I want to beat my time of 2 hours, 10 mins.

Anyway, after I ran we (my husband, older son, Roxy and I) took the boat out in the Chesapeake. My son, Roxy and I floated in inner tubes for a long time. Then we all took naps on the boat. Then we met friends at a restaurant (on the water) for dinner. I am now totally mellowed out on my couch. I will be up at 6 AM ready to finish my long run in Newark, DE. It is supposed to be 50 degrees - YES!!

I hope you are having a great weekend!
