Day 7 of Recovery and Have to Make Sure I Pace Myself...

I did a lot today...

My husband was out running errands all day. I have been feeling guilty because he is still healing from his surgery and is doing everything. So I gave Roxy a bath, did two loads of wash, emptied the dishwasher, did a long workout, painted my fingernails :), washed my hair, climbed the stairs to get more clothes, (he would not be happy if he knew that one), and went out to eat with 10 of my friends - we have gone out to dinner every Thursday for about five years now - couldn't miss it.

At one point I had to take Roxy out, tried to get her to pee on my deck but she wouldn't. I had to maneuver myself down a flight of stairs to get her outside. My foot was a little sore after that.

I sat down between chores to elevate and ice my foot, especially after taking Roxy out.

One of my friends had the same surgery 6 weeks ago. She messed her foot up while trying new pants on the other day - they were a little long so she stood on her tiptoes (instinctively). Messed her surgery up. Scary how easily and quickly she moved backwards.

So, after looking at her swollen foot, I made a mental note to be more careful. It is hard to sit and know things have to be done, but it will be there tomorrow. (Darn it!)

I did real good with my food choices at the restaurant. They have a popcorn machine (one of the reasons we go there). I brought my nutrisystem popcorn and put it in one of the popcorn bowls. I had a salad with skinless chicken breast, strawberries, mandarin oranges, almond slices and 1 tablespoon poppyseed dressing. Yum!

    I'm taking notes in prep for my upcoming surgery and wondering about alot of these little details, particularly with my pups, and the other 100 things that need to be done, and accidentally barely putting weight on the foot. I do want to do more than sit in the chair, and I know that will get old fast! More to consider. I know I can't control it all, but it helps to learn about the things I haven't considered. Thank you for your blogs.

Be careful! Don't over-do it!! Great job on your weight loss too! Take care!!

    Be very careful on steps. If you put weight on your foot, it will twinge and you will definitely react which could cause you to fall.

I have to buy shoes a size bigger than my right foot and put insoles in them because my left foot is messed up. I called the orthopedic doctor's office each time I fell and a receptionist kept telling me I had a window on my cast (No, I didn't) and that if I saw red through the cast to go to the Emergency Room.

Later, the doctor did cut a window in the cast to check on my foot. It didn't heal correctly and I have had a swollen ankle ever since. Doing stuff while you are healing and maybe hurting your foot is not worth a lifelong sentence of problems with it if you injure it.

That's really neat about your weekly dinner with friends thing. Your meal choice sounds delicious.

Day 6 of Recovery and the Scale is Moving Again...

I was so busy last night that I am just writing about Day 6!

Washed my hair in the sink on my own in the morning, watched the movie "Bad Teacher" (wasn't that great) with my husband, ordered a new pair of pants from the Gap then took an hour figuring out an exercise plan for my upper body. Must have been a good plan because my arms definitely felt "the burn".


I participated in two LiveMind Meetings. The first was by Coach Nancy on running tips. I learned some tips to use when I am able to run again. She also suggested some books. I am going to order a couple of them on my Nook today. This is a good time to read them so I will be all ready when I get the ok to run from the foot Doctor. I think it will also help to keep me focused on running.


The second was with SparkGirl32 (Lauren). It was a weekly motivational meeting I have been participating in for about 6 weeks. Some of the participants on the call have lost 70 - 100+ pounds! Talk about self discipline! This week's topic was the importance of breakfast and breakfast ideas. And, I learned something new! Did you know your blood "gets sticky" at night and you are more prone to a heart attack or stroke in the morning because there is more of a chance of blood clots forming? Breakfast helps to prevent this!


And, finally... I lost 5 pounds in 1 1/2 weeks!


And, after watching what my husband and kids have been eating since my foot surgery I am so glad I ordered NutriSystem! While I am eating veggies, fruits, salads and Nutrisystem meals, they are choosing to eat: cheese quesadillas, white rice, cheese and broccoli, pizza, buffalo cheese steaks -- you get the picture. That's what they would have been making for me! I would have gained at least 5 pounds if they were cooking for me!

So, it was a good day - my foot continues to get better and I am keeping myself busy!

    Congrats on the loss! That's terrific! Are you on crutches now? I think you burn more calories on crutches than just walking. When I had my foot surgery I think I lost weight too and the crutches were the only thing different.

Day Five of Recovery and Exercising Again...

This was a great day all around. Went to the Doctor this morning and he is very happy with my progress. He said most patient's feet don't look as good as mine at this point because they walk on it! How they walk on it I have no idea - that would hurt immensely! Also, if someone is going to take the time to get their foot fixed, you would think they would do what the Doctor suggests!
Anyway, I go back again in 10 days and need to stay off of it as much as possible. I decided to stay out of work at least until Monday, maybe next Wednesday. I will see how I feel. I still have to ice my foot a lot and keep it up, and I get tired easy - which is probably because I am not running right now!

So, I have been going through the Spark exercises and You Tube exercises (referred to me by the Chair Exercise Team). I worked out a plan of lower, core and upper exercises that I can do without using my foot. I did the lower and core plan today. It took me about 50 minutes including the cool down. I did work up a little sweat when doing the lower body exercises! I am excited to do the upper and core plan tomorrow. It is nice to be moving again!

Day Four of Recovery...

Today was awesome! NO PAIN at all, and I am off of the tylenol with codeine!
I got to sit out on the deck a few times today - it was hot out there! And, I got up the stairs (great tricep work-out) and got a shower.

I started going through chair exercises on-line, courtesy of the Chair Exercise Spark group. I am going to put together an exercise plan with them tomorrow. I can use my weights and resistance band with quite a few of them.

I also go to the foot doctor in the morning. It will be the first time I see my foot unwrapped.

    Hi R. Mom! Didn't that shower feel great?! So glad to hear you doing so well! That's what you get for following doctor's orders, but try not to overdo it too soon (I know you, you eager beaver!). Day Three of Recovery...

Everything went very well today - very small amount of pain, most of the day my foot didn't hurt at all. My Dr. called me tonight to see how I was doing, and was very happy to hear my progress. He reiterated staying off of it, which I will.

Spent part of the day talking to my BFF. She told me that she is now running 3 miles a day, and I inspired her after our 5k race in September. She wants to run the Disney Wine and Dine 1/2 marathon with me next September, so we are going for it!! It looks like a blast.

My husband booked a trip for us to go to San Antonio, TX in Feb for 4 days. I have heard it is wonderful, it is something for us to look forward to as we both heal from our surgeries.

Nutrisystem went well today, too. Enjoyed rotini and meatballs for dinner, just got done eating my evening snack - a chocolatey peanut bar. YUM! Ate 1100 cals today.

Tomorrow I am going to start doing chair exercises. I am getting a lot of great tips from the Chair Exercise Spark Team.

    I thought about your post on goals, (I was going to write your goal post, lol!), I was recommended to this Sparker's page to watch a video on discipline. It seemed to go hand-in-hand with what you wrote about goals. (not goal posts, Ha Ha!)

    Hi R.zMom, Glad to hear you're taking your recuperation one day at a time and getting a lot accomplished even tho' you're laid up! Don't forget, drugs are good!! Glad you're enjoying your Nutrisystem.... it was a rainy day here so got a couple of movies in... nice day to do nothing!
