Self Talk!

Friday, September 17, 2010

The last two days have been very interesting! We (hubby & I) went up to the islands to visit with some friends. Now, I was a bit nervous because I knew I wouldn't always have control over my foods. I brought plenty of bottled water & kept one w/me at all times. I packed yogurt, granola, & flaxseed so I could keep my morning routine. I brought a huge bag of nectarines & oranges so I could have them available for myself & also share w/my friends. It was strange for me...because I was often afraid to eat anything. I ended up doing alright. I actually didn't even use all my calories the first day I was there. I did enjoy wine with my friends in the evening.

I've been telling myself that I will NOT forbid myself anything! I keep telling myself that anything in MODERATION is fine! I keep reminding myself that it's all about PORTION CONTROL! I keep telling myself that I must EAT LESS & MOVE MORE! I've been telling myself that I'm pursuing a healthy LIFESTYLE & NOT A QUICK FIX! I'm telling myself that I will focus on ONE DAY AT A TIME! I'm reminding myself that I am ACCOUNTABLE for what I put in my mouth & that what I put in my mouth may inevitability END UP on my hips & stomach & thighs! I keep telling myself that I CAN DO THIS! I keep telling myself that I WANT THIS MORE THAN ANYTHING! I keep telling myself that I WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!

Catch me if you can! emoticon

Great blog!! I used to hate the concept of 'moderation in all things' or indeed anything - but then I realised that it's the only way forward and you have reminded me of that. Thank you.
Congrats on moderation whilst with your friends - sounds like you did really well - in fact with your positive attitude it sounds like you can do anything. emoticon

Another 1.6 lbs gone & banished forever!!!

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

Yep! Gone! Banished! Exiled! emoticon

Okay, enough celebration! Now, back to work! I'm preparing to enter what I call the "Steppin it Up" phase of my program! I want to HEAT THINGS UP & get my fat a burnin'! So, for this ol' body that hasn't seen exercise in YEARS...I'm gonna begin with simple stretching. I went & purchased a beginner's pilates kit today. This kit contains a pilates mat, DVD w/3 20 min. workouts, & a resistance band. My favorite part of all this? BEGINNER'S WORKOUT! Caught my eye....& begin I shall!

emoticon I can't wait!!!

I did want to buy a pedometer when I bought this beginner's kit. But wouldn't ya know it, they were out of them! Must be a lot of people our there counting their steps! I didn't have time to run to another store...so I'll have to try to get one this weekend.

I got my hour walk in...did well w/my daily intake...& have done my 8 glasses of H2O! So, life is good in my world! And it's just gettin' better & better! I'm doing it! I'm gonna be the BEST that I can be!!!

Catch me if you can! emoticon

LOVE the way you put that: GONE, banished FOREVER! Great way of looking at it! I am going to have to adopt that state-of-mind!

Pilates is fantastic! I always tell women that Pilates is the BEST way to flatten the tummy--no amount of crunches will do it like Pilates will and WAIT till you see how much it improves your posture... Hope you blog about how you like your DVD...

Glad we're new SparkFriends!

No cardboard frozen entrées here!!!

Monday, September 13, 2010

Hello Sparkers!

I worked today & was on one of the units (of a hospital) when I saw a nurse take out her lunch. She had a frozen entrée from one of those high priced weight loss companies that advertise constantly on TV, using celebrities & such. Well, first of all, it was a very THIN package ...& what she pulled out was two very small pieces of bread with "stuff" frozen on top of it. FIRST of all...it didn't look appetizing at all! I couldn't even tell what it was! The nurse then grumbled that she was starving & was trying to lose 20 lbs & how she just had to (now this is truly what she said, I'm not making this up!), she said she had to... "suffer & eat it". She went on to describe other "entrées" she's had & tell me how tasteless & nasty they were, not to mention the EXPENSE! And then she says.......now, are you ready for this???? She says......"but what can I do? I need to lose 20 lbs!"

emoticon This was my cue!!

I quickly & enthusiastically told her all about SparkPeople! How awesome it is! How simple it is! How you get tons & tons & tons of support! About the abundance of resources! Recipes & meal planning ideas! Ideas to help keep you motivated! The teams & blogs! How FUN it is! I told her about the nutritional tracker online & the focus on proper nutrition & fitness! That you get to eat wholesome & nutritious food! REAL FOOD (not cardboard entrées!) ...food that TASTES GOOD! About how ENCOURAGING it all is! And the best part of all.... that it's absolutely FREE!

Ya know what? I think we have another member joining us soon! emoticon

Oh how I LOVE spreadin' the Spark!!!

WANTED: New & Exciting Taste Sensations!

Friday, September 10, 2010

Happy Friday All! emoticon

It's been a long week & I'm looking forward to relaxing this weekend. I'm going to run errands & get some shopping done. For sure, I'm going to get up to the farmers market & load up on veggies & fruits. I'm wanting to SPREAD MY WINGS & expand my palate! So I'm looking for new & exciting taste sensations!

I've been trying something new each time I visit the market, & so far I've been pleased. On the last visit, I bought almond butter. I need to take in more"good" fats & so I thought I'd give it a try. My daughter uses it & encouraged me to try it. I put 1 tbsp on a mini bagel & I have to admit it was quite tasty.

Let's see...I've tried greek yogurt the visit before. Now, this I LOVE & am using daily! I've tried a couple different brands & they've all been delicious!

I've tried steel cut oats a time before that. Mmmmmm...was delish w/honey! Very filling & satisfying too! I just need to make certain I have time to COOK it in the morning!

I've also tried flaxseed, which I've ground up & keep in the frig. The first day I used it...I added 2 tbsp to my yogurt (so okay, I read it was a "serving size") along with the fruit, go lean crunch, & walnuts. Um, I quiiiickly found out that I should have started out SLOWLY & worked UP to 2 tbsp, 'cause it went RIGHT THROUGH ME! I now use 1 tbsp. daily...

emoticon

If anyone has suggestions on what I should try next, please share!! I'm open to trying new foods/fruits/veggies! As they say...VARIETY is the SPICE of LIFE!

Well, I look forward to reading your ideas! Thanks for reading this & have a glorious weekend! Keep Sparkin!

I like trying new foods and recipes also. This past weekend I made roasted chickpeas. They were awesome. My boyfriend munched on them while watching the Patriots game Sunday. They were simple to make. Roast (at 400 degrees) on a baking sheet with a little EVOO, salt, pepper, garlic seasoning and Hot shot seasoning from McCormicks. Turning them to evenly brown. You could even mix it up a bit and do a sweet version with cinnamon.

I'm also excited it's starting to cool off. I love roasting vegetables in the oven. Especially brussel sprouts, asparagus and carrots. The carrots when roasted come out so sweet its like eating a piece of candy. emoticon

Dr. Fabulous, aka our family doctor, recommended I eat Chia seeds (Yes, like the pets!) to boost my calcium intake. He prefers I get calcium from whole foods. Two TBPS per day was his recommendation. I've added it to yogurt, salads, cereal and cottage cheese. I especially like it on cottage cheese as I mix a lot of other chopped veggies and herbs into my 1/2 c. serving. It's a great way to get more veggies and eat cheese. There's a recipe on the Internet (that I've seen but didn't bookmark) for making chocolate pudding out of the seeds. Apparently when soaked at a certain ratio they form a tastless jell that is easy to "doctor up." Love the almond butter.

Here is a great morning breakfast starter
almond butter on grained toast with sliced banana

1/4 cup ground flax seed flax seed should always be ground to any benefits from it whole just goes through whole
place 6 almonds while grinding the flax seed this part can be done the night before and refrigerated
1/2 apple shredded in a bowl mix a little
add one table spoon pure maple syrup no subs on this
one teaspoon hemp or flax oil
Enjoy it is filling and gives you energy
I sometime mix all without the apple and dip a banana in it.mmm good
this is a great energy start, time wise not bad..now oat meal I have learned to cook one portion in the microwave buy the quick cook ones add some fruit to it

I too love to try new foods - well, atleast new to me foods.
In recent weeks I have tried several kinds of Greek yogurts and they are really good. I've tried the 2% and the 0% fat versions, with fruit and without fruit. I have tried dried figs; various hummus's; I want to try jicama - hear it's good, too. Can't recall anything else right now, but know I try to try new things each week. Whether is fresh fruits and vegetables or even packaged foods. I tried Skinny Cow low fat ice cream sandwiches after reading a post on SP about them and I am now addicted to them - as an occasional treat! Yum, if you like ice cream!
Keep me posted on what you find and like...I'd love ideas too.
Thanks for this entry!

I absolutely love veggies that are cooked in olive oil. Olive oil is one of those 'good fats' - fats that are healthy for you. My wife will cook a mixture of baby carrots, green beens, aspargus, and broccoli, and cook them in olive oil just enough so that they aren't raw, but are still a little 'crispy'. She makes enough at one time, so that she can put it in the refrigerator and I'll have enough for 3-4 days. That way when I need something healthy to eat, I just put a couple of handfuls of this mix into the microwave for about 2-3 minutes, and voila - instant meal.

It tastes great and has gone a long, long way in helping me get rid of more than a few pounds.
