Working SMARTer not HARDer!

Thursday, September 15, 2011

Yep! That's right! I'm telling ya, my friends! This is me looking out over the expansive highway! And I'm strategizing what I should do next! Ya see, my weight's plateaued & I'm feeling frustrated! And I hate it when I feel this way! So, I've gotta take action!

First of all, let me explain! I made up a list of what's working for me...& what's not!

What's working is...

-daily exercise (90-120 min of something every day)
-strength training w/kettlebells 3 times weekly
-8 to 10 cups of water daily
-nutritious meals prepared by me at home
-healthy choices MOST of the time
-5 or more servings of fruits & veggies daily

What's not working is...

-nightime snacking
-portion sizes
-carb overload!

I do fine for most of the day! See!

Breakfast consists of yogurt, blueberries, flaxseed, & walnuts.
Lunch is a large salad w/everything in it but the kitchen sink! lol
Dinner varies but I cook low fat & wholesome. Everything from scratch.
Snacks are usually greek yogurt, fruit bars, fruit, peanuts, & occas. pretzels or popcorn.

My problem area? SNACKING at night!

My solution? A game plan! And here it is!

I plan to lose 2 lbs in 1 month, beginning 9/14/11 & ending 10/14/11.

I will:

-Weight & measure all that I eat!
-Exercise 90-120 min daily! In some form or fashion!
-Stay in the 1500-1800 calorie range daily
-Strength training 3x week
-LIMIT night snacking by......
being mindful - keeping a journal & document what I eat after dinner
& log it publically! No exceptions!
-I plan to do NON-EATING tasks in the evenings at my discretion to keep my hands busy! I've just started a jigsaw puzzle last night!
-Weigh in & report progress every Wednesday!

I know I CAN do it! emoticon

Now, I know many of you've been wondering why all the doctor appointments & medical tests & such these last couple of weeks. Well, I'm having some medical issues with a prolapsed bladder. I've had two previous surgeries...& it's highly likely I'll be having a third. I'll know more tomorrow, as I'm seeing a surgeon in the morning. It's been difficult for me to exercise as much as I've been with this problem & I need to do something. It appears that surgery is my only option at this time, so...I'll keep you posted! We shall see what we shall see! One day at a time my friends! One day at a time!

Now, I hope you're all well! I've begun working off those 2 pounds, by golly! Yesterday went well.....& I'm on day 2! And I've got Chef Meg's Slow Cooker Lasagna in the crock pot for dinner! Yummy! I'll let ya know how it turns out!

Can't wait! emoticon

Rose you are just amazing. You recognize a potential problem then you jump in to action to elevate it. Whether it be fitness, nutrition, weight loss or other life's nuisances. I think the puzzle is a great idea. I wonder if Bob would do one with me. He needs to rest right now as he goes thru move medical testing. I tried to teach him how to do sudoko with out any luck when he was in the hospital. If only I could find a jigsaw puzzle of a naked lady or even better a football. That might work. Enjoy your weekend and I'm sure things will work out for you.

late night snacking I think is everyone's problem! I try eating less at dinner and saving calories for evening, cause after all these years I know I will pick at night.

Rose, I also had this snacking issue. I remedied it by buying snack size plastic bags. My downfall is peanut mix. So........ I take out the 1/4 cup portion, place it in the snack bag and divide the entire bag up when I buy it. I have a drawer in the kitchen just for this type of stuff. I can grab a bag when I want to, I already know it's the size I need and the portion that is allowable and I'm finished. I allow myself in this drawer one time a day. No exceptions. hope this helps.

I know you can do this. You are one of the strongest women I know. Love you, emoticonDonna

Wonderful plan Rose! I love that you put a lot of thought into it. I believe that knowing our problem areas is half the battle. I've had a hard time with the late night snacking myself, I think I'm finally getting over it.
I sure takes a lot of willpower to get ourselves healthy!

    Holy moly!
You and I are SO much alike in so many ways-
although I only lost 30 lbs (have regained half with hip bursitis this past year).
I even have the bladder issue but I'm nowhere near the surgery stage- you've had it done twice already??? I didn't know that could happen!
Take care of yourself, sweet Rose.

I've been out of the loop while we have been out of town, so I didn't know you were having medical issues; hope it gets resolved quickly! I don't like to think of my sparkfriend Rose having medical issues emoticon

I think your plan about evening snacks is a good one! I need to think about where my next focus needs to be...

    You absolutely CAN do it!

Crock-pot anything is delicious so I doubt you'll be disappointed. Please do let us know what happens at your medical appointment.

Night-time snacking is my downfall as well. For me, the answer is to get involved with something whether it's piano, Sparking, a quilt. The quilt option is best (especially if I'm working on a new design) because it requires complete concentration ... and then the hours just fly by and I don't feel a bit hungry. Mr. TB says I "get lost in the Q-zone".

So I think you've got a good plan.

Your title drew me right in - Working Smarter Not Harder! I hear you!
Love your plan! Know you can do it!
Portions and snacking are problems with me too. We just gotta keep on keeping on! We can handle them! You are - because you have a realistic, do-able plan! Good for you!

I'm sorry that medical issues with your bladder have come up again. I have to keep at the exercises I need to do to deal with my issues. I'm trying to avoid surgery at this stage - but know that at times that's what needs to be done. I always wanted to jog and maybe even run and when I tried to do that - that's when my problem was diagnosed. I may never run, but I can walk - really fast! LOL! I will be thinking of you and hoping you can put off surgery if at all possible. Hope you hear good news tomorrow!

What Goes Up MUST Come Down!

Saturday, August 27, 2011

I was so afraid to face the number on that scale this morning, my friends....& for good reason!

Yikes! I'm up 5.6 lbs! emoticon

Well, whatcha expect, I tell myself! I've NOT been tracking & my exercise was cut in half. I WAS mindful MOST days...& I did maintain eating 5 fruits & veggies daily! Oh, but that eating out will getcha every time, by golly! I found it so difficult to maintain portion control & choose wisely at restaurants, at times! And oh my! So many choices!

Well, I'm not fretting! I've re-activated Operation "Get Back On Track"! And I'm well on my way to getting back to normal! I've planned my meals for the week & went shopping! I've eaten a health & nutritious breakfast & lunch, & have planned a wholesome salmon dinner for tonight! I did run for 30 min & walk for 60 this morning! Day 1 is going splendidly, I must say! And what goes up....MUST come down! I guarantee it!

And Woohoo! It feels so GOOD to be back in my routine! emoticon

I'm setting my weight ticker back to 0 & will weigh in every Wednesday to measure my progress! I'm so excited to be getting back on track! And I know I CAN do it!

I hope you're all well! EnJOY the weekend & stay healthy & strong my friends!

Isn't it amazing how quickly the pounds come back the minute we stop tracking and exercising. I have no doubt that you will get those lbs back off and more soon enough. A lot of that weight is probably water retention from eating in restaurants. One meal can make my weight go up the next day as there is so much sodium in some of the meals. Along with tracking and exercise, drink lots of water!

Updates & What's Been Happening!

Monday, August 22, 2011

Hello My Friends! emoticon

I'm doing well & I'm missing you all! Just wanna let you know what's been happening & what's going on!

First of all, I want to emoticon & give lots of emoticon to all that have sent flower goodies & have kept our family in your thoughts & prayers! I feel the love! It's times like this that make one take pause & think about what's really important! Family & Friends!

This is my father-in-law & mother-in-law, Edmund & Virginia at a past Christmas Party. My father-in-law was 84 years old when he passed after a long illness. He will be missed!

And for all of you that don't in-laws live in a suburb of Cleveland, OH.

Hubby is doing well, thanks for asking! And my mother-in-law has LOTS of family, friends, & neighbors looking after her...& is doing quite well! We're staying w/her at the moment....& making sure she's eating. She & my father-in-law had been married for 62 years & she has quite an adjustment to make w/his passing! I do believe she's gonna be okay though! She's in good health & has her wits about her...& she's a trooper! God bless her!

We've been to a pre-season Brown's game & went to see the Lake Erie Crusher's play! and we're going to take in an Indian's game tomorrow! We've been hanging w/family every moment we get & gettin' in lots & lots of HUGS w/my grandchildren!!! Hey, it's ALL good!

We had intended to leave Ohio today & head back to SW Florida but hurricane Irene is heading straight for Florida, so we've decided to delay our return & stay put for the time being! Better safe than sorry! As the week progresses, we'll decide when to head back! We're not in any hurry though!

I've been keeping up my exercise...running & walking every morning. But I'm only doing 1 hour vs 2, & I've not been tracking my foods (by choice). I can't wait to return to Florida so I can get back to my routine! I miss my exercise classes & strength training, & cooking my own meals. Eating out is NOT the best of circumstances, as you can imagine!

Alright my friends! I hope you're all doing well! I promise I'll catch up w/you all when I get back to Florida! I'm missing you!!!

COMPUCATHY 8/24/2011 11:34PM sorry. Take care, sweet friend. Enjoy your family and be safe. Funny how being away from home and out of routines makes such a difference. I just went through that with our mini vacation to Missouri. I am going to Florida is September (visiting Disney World) and hoping to prepare and stay more on plan during that vacation. I really don't want to gain a bunch of weight during the vacation. I hope the hurricane does not affect you...and am hopeful it will just go back out to sea. I think you are smart to delay your return and keep an eye on the weather. Take care! Spark on! emoticon

    Hi Rose,
This is the first opportunity I've had to "really" log on and was so glad to see your update. You and your family have really been on my mind. My parents had been married 64 years when Mom died. My Dad, who was still very mentally acute (but in poor physical condition) had a really difficult time. Then his son (my brother) died the following year, leaving just me and Dad. I knew it wouldn't be long until he passed. It will be a very difficult adjustment for your mother-in-law. What will be most helpful is that she has many friends. (My husband and I had been married 42 years when he died). AND THANK GOD FOR ALL MY FRIENDS!

With regard to "Irene", the last report I saw on t.v. they believe it will skirt FL. I actually hope "good old Irene" just dwindles out!!!

I didn't feel the earthquake that many of my friends and neighbors did. Did you...they say that even some people in OH reported they felt the tremors.

I'll be glad when you're back safe and sound in FL but I think it's wonderful for your family that you have stayed longer.

So happy to read your update. It is almost a blessing that you are delaying your return to FL as it's after the funeral when your MIL needs her son the most. After everyone goes home and back to normal routines, that's when your MIL will grieve and I'm glad you and DH are there with her a few more days. You are so adjusted to your new healthy lifestyle that I can imagine you will enjoy getting back to your normal eating and exercise routine.

Thank you for taking me on your walks & runs & hikes & bikes & celebrations!
Thanks for sharing your JOY & sorrows! You've all brought me such JOY!
You've ALL touched my heart & I'm eternally grateful! You are LOVED!

AND a big THANKS to SparkPeople! With you, ALL is possible! You ROCK!

I've enJOYed sharing my Up's & Down's & ALL arounds! Let us now continue our quest to remain strong & healthy! We CAN do it my friends! One day at a time! We CAN!

How wonderful. I can remember when we started "sparking", as you appeared in the first picture above. In that year I have watched as you "melted" (it's that FL weather!) into the svelte person you are today.

I cannot tell you how much I admire you!!!!
We said, "You go girl", and by golly, YOU DID!!
What an inspiration!

HgA1C is 5.5! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Just wanna share the good news!!! emoticon

Went for bloodwork last Friday & got called with the lab results yesterday afternoon!

FYI: Hemoglobin A1C is a blood test that is done to check blood sugars. It actually lets the doctor know how your blood sugars have been running for a 3-month period. So, I've been NORMAL these last 3 months!

And that's WITHOUT medication!!! OMG! I'm NORMAL! emoticon

I just HAD to share! emoticon

LOVE & MISS YA ALL!!! emoticon emoticon

Sounds Rose like you have the best of both worlds right now. I know why you journeyed here to SP. It was to be able to stop taking medicine. Not only have you done that but look at the other results as well. Living healthier, exercising more and losing weight.. WooHoo.. Go YOU!!!.. Hugs.. Donna

I got mine too and believe it or not it was 5.5 I posted it Monday i think as soon as i got it.

What a coincidence that is. I was diagnosed at 8.8 and I take nothing for it . I used Metformin for a while then i joined Spark and the meds are history. Well done both of us, Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
I guess I am normal too.
