No Exercise for 4 days - 10 days Left

Sunday, September 12, 2010

Well, here it is Sunday. Wednesday I had tear duct surgery and was told not to exercise for 2 weeks! That seems like an awfully long time. I am so used to exercising everyday even it is only walking. But I do realize that I can't really do that much because my eye has to heal. I am also not supposed to go to work until after my follow up which is the 16th. I did make a call and found out that if I was up to it I can go to work. Will have to wait and see. Staying home is just not that much fun and there isn't much that I can do.

Finally Some Before and After Pics

Thursday, August 05, 2010

Well, I never thought that I would post before and after photos. And the funny part is I always thought I looked good even when I was heavy. I didn't realize that I was not at my best and that I needed to make a difference for my own health and well being.

Here goes (all the photos were taken at the Outer Banks):

June 2006 - not my heaviest

June 2009 - finally losing weight

June 2010 - down to a good weight and getting toned up

I still feel that I am a work in progress and need to maintain my exercise schedule and watching my calorie intake.

Quote for the Day

Friday, July 16, 2010

I use the Franklin Planner at work to help keep me organized. I like to read the quote for the day that is at the top of the page. Sometimes they seem so appropriate and right for that day. Yesteday the quote was:

"A sense of humor can help you overlook the unattractive, tolerate the unpleasant, cope with the unexpected, and smile through the unbearable." ~~~ Moshe Waldoks

Like I am going to do, smile through your Friday and find humor in every situation.

Have a great weekend. emoticon

Recalculating Steps in a Mile

Sunday, June 20, 2010

This morning I went over to the High School to try and refigure how many steps that I walk in a mile. When I did it last year, I came up with 2348 steps in a mile. I don't that is right so I went to try and recalculate. I walked around the track 4 times since it is a quarter mile track but apparently I was way off. Boy it was really a disaster, I came up with either 1500 or 1900 steps and that can't be right. My stride is just not that long. I am really short and I have a short stride. I usually take about 2 steps to my husband's 1. Oh well, I guess it is back to the drawing board and trying again next weekend.

It's interesting to read people's comments. I used to have an Omron and loved it. It died after about 4 years. Hope you figure out your answer!

PENELOPE007 8/30/2010 7:13PM

Ditto for Omron - it has been a terrific pedometer - so great I've given two away for birthday presents.

It motivates me to go the distance anywhere from 8000 to 11000 steps per day. I feel proud to make it part of my daily routine and think it has done more for my weight loss than any other activity other than logging my food and help from folks like you!

Amazon sells the Omron in many variations, but the $25.00 model is sufficient to accurately log your steps and distance. I wear mine daily! emoticon

IILAAD65 7/5/2010 9:40AM

I LOVE my Omron... my only criticism is that I can't see aerobic minutes the next day. That's the only stat it doesn't maintain for 7 days.

But I find it to be VERY accurate.

I like Blakbird's calculation though. I am going to try that!!

Report Inappropriate Comment
JUST_TRI_IT 7/2/2010 4:48PM

I am with BLAKBIRD... the pedometer really does a fine job. I have the OMRON and it does a great job. I've checked in a a variety of ways and it seems to do a pretty accurate job.... when I walk. If I run, the stride is different so it is not accurate when I run/jog.

My DH woudl be the person doing the counting. He counts EVERYTHING! LOL... Yeah. he is into math.

Report Inappropriate Comment
JOKNOWS 6/25/2010 10:58PM

I've seen estimates that say somewhere around 2,000 steps represents one mile. And it seems the the previous poster broke it down pretty good mathematically. Your pedometer just may not be registering each step.

emoticonCongrats on doing such a great job!

Report Inappropriate Comment
BLAKBIRD 6/20/2010 10:36PM

    Hi,

Have you tried using a A pedometer to track the number of steps you take around that mile?. Once you have the number divide the distance (in inches 1 Mile = 63,360 inches) by the number of steps example 2,000 to get your average stride length.
Example 63,360 / 2,112 = 30

IMO a pedometer is by far the easiest way to track the number of steps you take, Unless you really like to count.

Walmart.com shows several starting as low as $5.00

I found an Omron HJ-112 on ebay for less than $30 including shipping.

It does the following
Counts steps.
Calculates "Aerobic steps"
Shows the number of minutes in the aerobic range.
Calculates Calories burned
Shows the distance walked
Automatically resets to 0 at midnight
Remembers 7 days activity.

Note 1: I assume it determines if you're in the aerobic ranges based the number of steps you take in a second.
Note 2: The HJ-112 calculates the distance walked based on the stride length you enter. The more accurate your stride length the more accurate the distance walked is going to be.

I initially set my stride as 31.5 (an average adult male stride) walked around the middle school track 4 times, 2127 steps (63360 / 2127 = 29.84) then updated my stride in the HJ-112

Have fun.

The most intersting thing about the pedometer, is how far I walk back and forth to the restroom at work about 1/2 mile per day, something to do with those 8 cups of water...

Yeah, I come up with different numbers - but usually within 200 steps or so. I've averaged to come up with 2100 steps per mile for me - but I'm a bit taller that you are.

Other option - drive a route and clock 1 mile on your car. Then walk it, noting steps when starting and then finishing the route. The straighter the route, the easier to measure.

I think with the track, it makes a huge difference if you're on the inner or outer part of the ring.

Zumba and My Heart Rate Monitor

Thursday, April 29, 2010

Today I got my heart rate monitor in the mail. I was so excited to be able to find out how many calories it would say I burned doing my Zumba class. So after playing around with it to figure out how to set it, I put it on and went to my class. I have generally used the High Impact Aerobics for 60 minutes to calculate my calories when I take a class. It is usually 350 or so calories burned. My heart rate monitor showed that I had burned 514 calories. emoticon I couldn't believe it. I had heard you could burn 500 or more calories doing Zumba. I plan to keep wearing the monitor and to track my walking calories and other exercises to see what I burn.
