Winter getaway

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

This will be short and sweet as the hot springs are waiting for us! My dear husband and I finished our gourmet dinner and I couldn't be happier with the result! I'm a bit over for the day, but I was able to leave food on my plate as an exercise in self control. No, I didn't want to leave that last two bites of delicious salmon! No I didn't want to leave the last of my dessert, but I am trying to remember the adage, "eat to live, rather than live to eat!

The waitress was so helpful to me when I told her I would like suggestions for my "plan." I refuse to use the term diet anymore! She totally understood and made suggestions and substitutions to make the meal more in accordance with what I need.

It's snowing lightly, and we are getting ready to go outside to the hot springs to get a little exercise and enjoy the night sky and warm water. Two years ago when we came it was -20 (that's not including the wind chill!) It was fantastic! It's almost too warm for us in the 20's.

What fun we're having on our winter get away thanks to our children!

Hope everyone is having a great evening! emoticon

I'm glad you are having such a great time! What a memory it will make for you and your loved one.
It is good to leave food on your plate. We tend to think just the opposite--that it is bad. Better to let the food go to waste where it belongs, than to let the food go to your waist.

Need time

Sunday, January 03, 2010

This morning my son and daughter in law head back home to Seattle. My oldest son is here until Tuesday with his two dogs. I am finding it very hard to find any time to work seriously on my goals and how I will reach those this year! I love my kids and am so glad they are here, but I need to do this soon!

Don't panic! Enjoy the visit without worrying about your goals for now. Then take the time you need to begin working on them. Not everything has to begin on the first day of the new year.

I hope you can make the time to get the job done! Had my son exercising with me this morning. He thought it was easy so I said then come do it with me. Well... lol He's in good shape but he was huffing and puffing. Good luck on getting it done soon.

This reminds me of that quote "Time is like a thief, stealing into the night.." Forgive me, having studied literature little bits spill out of my brain once in a while, without any reference to the rest of it, author etc. :)
That said, I understand. I often hear"we all have the same 24 hours" but what we don't all have is the same life circumstances! So, just enjoy your time with your son and dogs and know that Wednesday, you are back to your plan. Is your son able to work out with you? Might be silly, just a thought....................

2010 A look forward

Friday, January 01, 2010

I must admit I'm very excited at the possibilities of a new year and new decade. My hopes have been bouyed by my fellow sparkies. For the first time ever I KNOW I can reach my goal of losing 102 pounds. The journey began last April when my doctor gave me a dire warning that I was soon to be a diabetic if I didn't increase my exercise and decrease my weight. He told me to get into a diabetes prevention program which I did, that really helped tremendously as I did what I committed to do upon signing up. As that program wound down, I had a panic as I knew I couldn't do this without help. My friend and classmate told me she had joined SP. I knew what it was as my daughter had signed me up for it a few years earlier. I wasn't ready at that time to work it, but last fall I was very ready.

My first goal is to reach the 50 pound mark, 8 pounds from that now, my fitness goal is that I continue to keep up my classes and workouts to maximize my strength and fitness.

Because of the difference others (SP) have made in my life, I so desire to come along those who have a large amount to lose and be their encouragement and give them hope that I never thought possible in the weight loss area of my life. I pray that I will be given this opportunity.

My prayer for all of you is for a very Happy New Year filled with fitness, good healthy food, friends, fun and faith in God! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

You are an inspiration to me. This year I want to lose 50 pounds. I am going to try hard to do that. I am diabetic, but if I lose weight I may not have to take the meds I'm on now.

Thanks for your story and successes. Happy new year to you and your family.

Christmas outcome

Saturday, December 26, 2009

Christmas with my family was wonderful! My two oldest sons traveled to come home which made it more special for our teenage son and my husband and I. Sorry our daughters, their husbands and our only two grandchildren couldn't be here, but we understand!

I was afraid about losing control yesterday with food. I had decided to loosen the reigns that I have on what I eat and did go over my usual. I had a sugar cookie that my daughter in law made, but told myself to leave some of it. I was able to do that. I am going to keep doing that when I allow myself a treat as I see it as an exercise in self control.

It wasn't fun to weigh myself this morning and see that I was up 1-2 pounds from earlier this week! Yet, I am thrilled with my deep desire to go workout today! A year ago, a weight gain would have been so depressing that I couldn't work out! What a difference Spark People has made in my life. (saving that for a different blog)

I earnestly pray for my fellow sparkies that we would be able to enjoy the special things in this holiday season including special foods, but that we would do so in MODERATION and that we would keep exercising to help our bodies and our minds stay focused on our goals.

Have a great weekend! emoticon

I think you did wonderful. It is much more important to enjoy time with your family during this season than get overly stressed. When you sons leave get back on track and enjoy the memories you had with them!

I, for one, am kind of in the same boat. My weigh in is tomorrow and I fear the worst. However, I will still be less than what I was when I started, so there is some good news. We'll see what the morning brings.

I think you did good Ritarose. Like someone else said, that 2#'s could just be water gain and you will get rid of it in no time.

Back to business this week.

Oh, these holidays can be brutal with regard to food............shake off that 1-2 pounds, you can fluctuate that much within a day with water etc. It is allgood! Move your bod today and watch your food and you will be back on track again! Nice job leaving part of the cookie...........not an easy feat! :)

Christmas Choices

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Dear Fellow Sparkies,

I am praying for all of us, that we will proceed through the next two weeks by taking steps to make sure we don't sabatoge our weight loss efforts! I, for one, have been on several plans through the last 23 years that I've been overweight and know how very hard it is to get back on track after falling off. IF, you do get off track, I encourage you to get right back on. That has always been hard for me in the past, but now I focus on my goal and my health and it helps me.

I think it was on SP that I read about how we act if we get a traffic ticket, we don't continue to speed afterwards. We change our behavior. In the same way it doesn't make sense to have the attitude that, "well I blew it, so I might as well just eat what I want." You can see where that makes no logic at all!

I encourage you to menu plan and even have an emergency snack bag. I noticed that as I'm busier I've run into trouble being overly hungry and unprepared with a quick snack. I'm loading up with fresh fruit and veggies that I will clean and package for a quick snack. That actually combats not only the need for a quick low cal snack, but also I have trouble getting all of my fruits and veggies in.

Merry Christmas to all you in Spark Land! Make it the best ever by making wise choices!

Wonderful advise Rita!!! Thank you!!! I have a plan in place for Christmas through the New Year. I have asked God for help getting through and I know I have friends here on SP (and here in Billings....you) that can help me if I need it.

Excellent blog, Rita! Such great points and ones that I'm using myself this season. The thought of starting the new year upset with myself (again) for blowing it during the holidays is enough to make me stop and take a deep breath before I charge into overinduldging. I've had a few times of going overboard, but I allow that time to happen and the I let it go. I get right back to my plan and am actually finding that easier to do than ever before. I "start fresh" every single day and I don't let the overboard moments get to me as much. Thanks for the great tips on how to be good to ourselves as we finish off 2009 on a good note! emoticon emoticon emoticon
