30 minute jog in high winds...

There are numerous wind warnings along with warnings for hail, and t-storms later today and a tornado watch seems to exist. Welcome to Texas in the spring!

The high winds are pretty miserable but I've got a workout to maintain so after the warm up, I did a 30 minute jog, 12 min/mile. After the workout, I beat a hasty retreat back inside the house and consumed a big bottle of no-name water while I watch part of the Tavistock Cup on TV.

Yeah, I know, you probably get bored watching golf, but this one breaks most of the rules. David Faherty gives a running monologue / roast of the players as they tee off on the first hole, and it's not silent like most tournaments - David is standing right behind the golfers and the comments are pumped live to the crowd. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and fun to watch.

Even with the wind, I did 2.50 miles today. Add the warm up and cool down, and the total comes to:
3.10 miles
40 minutes

    Glad you got your jog in without the hail falling!

Sounds like an interesting version of golf. About the only sport I can't stand watching (and no idea why I hate it so much) is basketball. Which makes March mind-numbing about sports-focused TVs.

    I used to watch golf with an elderly friend, back when I had a TV. His commentary was really funny and made the experience a ton of fun.

A walking day of rest

Cardio Streak Day 325

It's Sunday and it's my "off" day which means all I do is walk for twenty minutes, no more. The weather is pretty cloudy and we've got a threat of rain, but it was dry when I went.

Twenty minutes produced 1.17 miles at a fairly easy clip. It was a good rest day for my aching muscles.

Cardio Streak Day 324

I'm writing this from my phone so it will be brief. Today I went to the nearby high school track and did 3.00 miles in 36 minutes.

Interesting that it seemed like a longer distance that when I'm out jogging on the streets. I think the lack of changes to the scenery make it seem that way. I think I'll stick to the streets for a while...

With the warm up and cool down, the total effort was:
3.60 miles
46 minutes

Cardio Streak Day 323

Today is sunny and warm and the weather is just teasing us about what the summer has in store... whew, gonna be a hot one!

After a 5K yesterday morning followed by 18 holes of golf yesterday afternoon,

I really didn't stretch afterward. I was sooooo stiff last night and woke up the same way this morning. I went ahead and did some early light stretching routines this morning which helped a lot.

In my blog yesterday I mentioned that I might go eat Tex-Mex yesterday after the golf game but we didn't make it for Tex-Mex. Instead we decided to make it an Italian feast and I've got to admit, I blew the calorie limit out of the water. But it was a day where I burned about 1300 calories and had a good time with my middle son who is here on vacation. Although he leaves to go back in a few days, the youngest son comes to town on vacation beginning tomorrow... I may blow the diet yet again, at least once - and probably on Tex-Mex!

However, a couple of cheat days will not hurt me at all. I've been very good for the last year and now finally have a handle on the calorie monster and how to tame it. In the last 323 days I've learned that losing weight is a three pronged attack - calorie management, cardio, and strength. I now have the tools I need to manage any problem that should ever occur. However, I really believe it's not going to ever be an issue again!

For today, I did a 30 minute jog and let's call it 2.60 miles in that time. With the walking before/after, the total effort today was:
3.20 miles
40 minutes

    Calorie management, cardio, and strength . . . that's a good plan. And calorie management is rightfully in first place. A good exercise program lets you have your occasional indulgence, but you can't out-train a crappy diet.

    How awesome that you'll have a son or two around for so long! It is so wonderful to have family around.

I agree that a few on purpose calorie bashes will not deter your healthy lifestyle. It's the mindless calories that get us. Enjoy your time with your sons!

    Stretching is so important! I do at least 5 minutes of stretching pretty much every day, and it helps a lot. As for the food... all things in moderation, including moderation!

A 5K before golf today

I've had quite a few slow/steady jogging days recently and I've always thought it was best to change up the workouts on alternating days. I decided to go back to a 5K run/walk today to give a workout to slightly different muscles.

The weather today is sunny and slightly windy. I've got a golf outing planned for early afternoon with one of my boys. Interestingly, he pulled up beside me while I was out running this morning. In the car, he had a sack of donuts! Oh to be young again...

However, I can remember when my metabolism was absolutely on fire and I could eat anything I wanted (which usually was Tex-Mex five or six times a week!). Come to think of it, I think the last time I had Tex-Mex was back in November. Maybe we'll do something about that later after golf.

Today I did the run/walk 5K in 36 minutes, a little slower than my times of a couple of weeks ago, but only by a minute.

With the warm up and cool down, the total effort was:
3.91 miles
50 minutes
509 calories burned
golf will be about 800 calories additional today!! woohoo!!!
