Cardio Streak Day 292
1230 hrs 52F
5K
It's a lot warmer today and the sun is out with only a few clouds in the sky. Today is a scheduled 5K workout.
After the warm up, I started right in to the workout. The 5K today was 35 minutes, an average of 11:25 per mile.
My time per mile has improved but I feel like I pushed it a little too much, a little too soon. Although I'm doing the time, it's uncomfortable. Oh, nothing hurts, there is no pain, it's just a feeling that I'm pushing too hard.
With the warm up and cool down, today's workout was:
3.75 miles
45 minutes
562 calories burned

As MOBYCARP said, you don't have to push that much every day. Definitely listen to your body. There is some discomfort to pushing that we don't want to just surrender to and not progress. But there is equally as much the danger of injury if we push faster than parts of our body are ready for. (Tendons and ligaments take longer to strengthen up than muscles, so the big parts may feel fine and ready but pushing would strain those little parts.) Usually if I'm overtraining the body will crash pretty hard. Imagine feeling like you did today but your pace time decreased substantially and maybe you couldn't even finish. That's a sign of overdoing it. On the flip side, I've never kicked myself for taking a rest day when I suspected some overtraining. Nothing wrong with a little break. The road or treadmill will still be there when you get back. Report Inappropriate Comment |

When you're improving your pace, sometimes it will feel like you're pushing things too much. That's OK, you don't have to push every day as hard as you did today. The time will come when you run at today's speed and don't feel like you were pushing it.

congrats! I have done two 5 K's. one last spring and one last summer. I did better on the first one at 47:40. the second one I was at 52:50 but that course was not flat. I am going to retrain myself at home and use it for workouts when it warms up
