Cardio Streak Day 241
1000 hrs – Elliptical
It's still a cold and miserable day even though it's Christmas Day. By the way, Merry Christmas to everyone reading this! It's been raining for about three days but at least it's not a little colder with snow. It's not that I don't like snow, but it just doesn't have the same magic that it did when I was a kid. And then there's the year in grad school waaaaaay up nawth, where I saw maybe 50+ inches of snow that winter with temps down to minus 20F. Yeah, I've had enough of the cold and the snow!
But I got up this morning and headed for the coffee pot. A good quart or so of coffee later, I started moving around with the intention of a workout. With the miserable day outside, I opted for the elliptical again.
Yesterday was the 1000+ calorie burn on the elliptical and I'm still a little stiff from that, but it didn't deter me. I started with the intention of doing maybe 500 calories today. 50 minutes and 760 calories later was enough for today. I finished the day with some weight bearing exercises like situps, pushups, side straddle hops (jumping jacks) and even some running in place.
I have no idea how many other calories I burned, but I plan on doing a specific routine every day either before or after the cardio workout. Yes, I've done some along the way, but it has been a mixed bag. This is more of a structured workout and is based on The Fitness Ladder which can be found in and around The Hacker's Diet and / or Physicsdiet.com (which has been down for the last few days).
Today's total cardio was:
760 calories burned

Cardio Streak Day 240
1200 hrs – Elliptical
Brrrrr, it's cold outside. I'm out of town, out in the country, and I've got the elliptical in the back room that came in handy today. I woke not only pretty chilly air outdoors, but pretty steady rain so I really wasn't inclined to do an outdoor activity if there was another alternative. Turns out, there was.
I got on the elliptical device around noon, armed with a bottle of no-name water, a couple of Kleenex, and layers of clothing that I was sure would come off by the time I finished.
I was watching the end of a special on Joseph Stalin which was going to be on for another hour, so mentally I made the commitment for at least an hour workout while watching the remainder of the H2 special.
I began the first few minutes with the work indicator at the top of the Aerobic zone with my pulse rate somewhere around 100. After the first ten minutes or so, I pushed the work indicator to the top of the aerobic zone. After another ten minutes or so, I pushed the indicator up to the endurance zone and kept it there until I was done with my pulse rate only between 130 and 140.
Somewhere during the workout, I made the decision to go for a 1,000 calorie burn, something I've not done before today. At 70 minutes I hit my mark and finished another five minutes of very slow movement. The total burn wound up being over 1100 calories today.
1141 calories burned

Cardio Streak Day 239
0800 hrs – 20 minute walk
Brrrrr, it's miserable today. 38F would be fine, I suppose, if the sun were out. It's not. It's a cloudy miserable day and feels pretty chilly. Because of that, and some traveling I've got to do, I wasn't in the mood for a long workout. I opted for a 20 minute walk instead.
Nothing special, just a walk. I went out dressed in sweats, took the garbage to the curb, and hooked 'em for the next twenty minutes. I covered 1.25 miles.
Today, then, was
146 calories burned

Cardio Streak Day 238
1045 hrs – 5K Jog + 10 Minute Jog
It was nice and sunny today and although 50 has felt chilly to me in the past, the temp felt somewhat warm today. The lack of a breeze helped the warm feeling.
Today was a scheduled 5K jog. I did my usual five minute warm up walk then started right into the 5K. I've noticed that if I hesitate on starting the phone application, the two guys on my shoulders begin having "the" conversation. If I just go ahead and make the changes then hit START, it seems to eliminate any conversations going on.
Forty minutes later I finished a tad over 5K. This is a good slow jog for me but it's one I can complete without stopping or walking at any point. I did walk across a collector street at one point because I was dodging traffic, but that's all.
At the end of the 5K, which was actually 3.12 miles today, I did a five minute cool down walk then changed the phone app to a ten minute jog and hit the start button. During the added ten minute period, I covered 0.75 mile. I finished the day with a ten minute cool down walk.
So, walk for five minutes, jog for forty minutes, walk for five minutes, jog for ten minutes, walk for ten minutes. That seems to come out to 70 minutes. So why did I do the extra today?
A couple of days ago I wrote about some confusion over not losing weight. I received a reply from member 4A-HEALTHY-BMI who pointed me to a couple of additional references and a web site. The new calculations point to a weight loss over the last twelve weeks of four pounds. A quick validation of the numbers reflects that it was 'spot on' as out British friends like to say.
I'm now making changes to the calories in/out goals that I have set. The extra jog today was done to have more 'calories out' or more burn if you will. Hopefully that will energize my goal for another thirty pound loss!
I have a mechanic who makes house calls, believe it or not. He worked for me at the corporate place back when I still had an 8 to 5 and we keep in touch. I needed something looked at and he came over today. The first thing he said when he saw me was, "Wow, I almost thought you were somebody else!" I feel good about that although he didn't say who 'somebody else' might actually be.
With the warm ups and cool down and workouts today, the total was:
546 calories burned

Cardio Streak Day 237
1145 hrs – 20 Minute Jog
So today was scheduled for a 20 minute jog and I waited till almost noon before I went out. The sun was out and although it was 45F, it felt fairly warm. I had thought of wearing a light weight pair of gloves but when I went outside and discovered how warm it felt, I discarded the idea.
After the warm up, I started the jog. Twenty minutes later I had finished 1.55 miles. It's not a lot, but it's something that if I do long enough, will improve.
With the warm up and cool down, the total for the day was:
270 calories burned
