Day 173 - 5K jogging

Spark People Day 173
Cardio Streak Day 171
MA041/NC48/12

66F
1730 hrs

It was cold and windy this morning - well cold for me right now - it was in the 50s. I know some of you are in NY and you're laughing your butts off right now. But remember, I'm the guy who was complaining about the 113F summer we had and it's going to take a while for ME to get used to anything under 70F. Just bear with me!

I had a morning over in downtown Big D (that's Dallas for all you non-Texans) and didn't get the workout until this afternoon. I couldn't decide whether or not to wait for after school and go jog on a high school track or just run in the streets like normal. I opted for the streets and began the workout around 1730hrs.

When I started, the temp was 66F but the wind was out of the north between 20 and 30 mph. Since it felt "cold" (yeah, laugh it up), I actually wore my USS Carl Vinson cap today!

Today is scheduled for a 5K jog/walk. Several weeks ago I was doing a 5 mile jog on Tue-Thu, and a 5 mile interval run on M-W-Fri and it became a little much for the muscles. I made the decision to cut Tu-Th back to a 5K instead and then begin to work on the speed, or rather faster times for the 5K.

I usually change my workouts every couple of weeks. The last two weeks for jogging have been 0.3 Km jog followed by 0.1 Km walk, repeated until 5K is complete. Today I changed it to 1.0 Km jog / 0.1 Km walk. The time today was faster, duh!

Around the 3.5 Km mark, I changed the scheme a little and threw in a few extra walks but I'll get it, eventually, where I become less and less reliant on walking.

3.25 miles in 40 minutes gets me somewhere in the 12 min/mile range. Yipee!

This working out thing really works! Those of you who know me realize that I couldn't walk 50 feet without being out of breath not all that long ago. What a difference exercise and eating the right foods really can make!

Today's total workout with warm up and cool down:
3.85 miles
50 minutes
413 calories burned

That's good progress. As for the temperature, SP tells us that 55 fahrenheit is the ideal running temperature! I'd think with a 10 to 1 jog to walk ratio, you'd begin to feel warm enough in the low 60s!

But what do I know - I live in upstate New York and ran at 53 degrees today. The run was comfy in shorts and a tee shirt, but I wanted long pants and a jacket for the walk back to work afterwards.

I am so impressed. I am at a 24 minute mile so you are moving twice as fast as me. But I will get there...

As a Floridian, I completely get that you were cold. It was in the low 70's this morning and rainy. I was really really glad that I was going to spin class and not running. Miserable weather, if you ask me.

You're doing great! Love to hear about your runs!

I am still at the point where I can only dream of a 12 min/mile. As for the weather... it was almost 60 at noon here in my little corner of Western New York. Positively a heat wave!

Day 172 - Short, sweet, and to the point

Spark People Day 172
Cardio Streak Day 170
MA040/NC72/12

60F
0530 hrs

It was an early morning today so I could leave and spend the day with a friend. The alarm woke me around 0445 and I got up, had breakfast with water and then headed out into the great outdoors.

Today was scheduled for intervals:
60 sec run / 120 sec walk (repeat for 24 minutes)
45 sec run / 105 sec walk (repeat for 10 minutes)
30 sec run / 90 sec walk (repeat until I quit)

Although I started when it was dark, nobody tried to run me over and there just aren't any dogs out in this part of town. Everybody keeps them in yards or indoors, away from the casual runners of which there are a multitude.

The workout today was 4.08 miles in 57 minutes. With walking warm up and cool down, the total workout was:
5.00 miles
72 minutes
544 calories burned

is supposed to be warmer here tomorrow, i didnt walk as long today as i should have, but it was pretty warm, and as i waited so late in the noon to go, tomorrow, im getting up early and getting on that walk and beating the sun and heat..i pretty much have to drive to one of two tracks to really be able to walk, we have no sidewalks here and coaltrucks, etc, and neighbors dont tend their dogs....so, tomorrow, its an early day for me, lots of calorie burning....thanks for being an inspiration

Day 171 - The world is a brighter place today

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Spark People Day 171
Cardio Streak Day 169
MA039/NC53/12

66F
0830 hrs

Sunday! What a crappy start to the sports day yesterday but finally last night ended on a high note!

All of my NCAA football teams LOST yesterday. My youngest son's university soccer team LOST yesterday. You can understand my trepidation going into the Rangers game last night, I was "ooh fer" on the day.

When Detroit scored first, I switched over to the NASCAR race, but not for long, I just felt like I had to watch the baseball game so I started watching NASCAR during the baseball breaks (I hate commercials so it worked out pretty well). In the NASCAR world, I like Carl Edwards and for sentimental reasons I'd like to see Dale Jr win something. I'm not a die-hard motor sports fan, I just watch NASCAR on a part time basis.

The Rangers made an otherwise sucky day into a World Series trip for the home town (home area) team. This could be the year, sports fans.

I managed to sleep until 0700hrs today, got up and hydrated with a couple bottles of water (4 cups) then headed out for a walk about 0830. Today was scheduled only for a walk, for which I was really thankful! I did not feel dry today and experienced absolutely no cotton mouth or excess thirst pangs at all. Overall, it was a good day.

The area dogs all seemed to be confined behind fences today and I got my planned 30 minute walk without incident. Today was:
2.15 miles
32 minutes
248 calories burned

My day wasn't quite as bad. My Ags beat the pants off Baylor. That was certainly a bright spot!

My son and his wife were sitting right behind the Ranger's dugout last night and they said is was AWESOME! It certainly put a big exclamation point on the end of my Saturday as well.

You are doing so well and making terrific progress. I am pretty new here and I am going to subscribe to your blog so I can be inspired by your continued success. If you don't mind, I am adding you as a friend as well.

Hope your Sunday sports day is better.

Sunny

I feel you on the sports teams losing yesterday. It wasn't a good day for my teams or my Nascar driver Jimmie Johnson. Oh well, that's the good thing about sports, you always have next week.
Great job on the walk this morning. I hate to admit, I was still in bed at 0830, but a walk is on my schedule.
Have a great day! Keep up the good work.

Day 170 - Easy walking today

Saturday, October 15, 2011

Spark People Day 170
Cardio Streak Day 168
MA038/NC57/12

66F
1130 hrs

Saturday! Finally some well deserved rest for my legs. I'm out of town this weekend and trying to type on a laptop while listening to a 1962 recording of Maynard Ferguson playing 'Maria' from West Side Story. Ah, his older works were better than his later offerings.

I set out this morning with a 30 minute goal in mind... walking, nothing serious, nothing strenuous. Luckily the country dogs all minded their own business and the walk was pleasant, cool, and uneventful.

After yesterday's possible hydration event, I noticed that my mouth was dry about half way through the walk today. I've been doing some research on hydration and found some very definitive writings so far. But the work continues.

NCAA games today at 1100, 1300, & 1430. My youngest son has a far-away soccer game at 1500 so much luck to him! The Rangers try to put it away tonight in Arlington at 1905hrs. Let's hope this weekend is better than last!

Today was:
2.03 miles
33 minutes
227 calories burned

Day 169 - Water is important!

Friday, October 14, 2011

Spark People Day 169
Cardio Streak Day 167
MA037/NC58/12

72F
1130 hrs

I was outside this morning investigating a noise before the sun rose and it was just a tad on the chilly side. I wasn't dressed for a workout so when I went back inside, I had breakfast and watched a movie. At about 1100 am I determined that I had put it off about as long as I could. The sun was out and warming things nicely. With breakfast I had two glasses of water and two more afterward although I didn't down any before I went out the door for the workout.

I did my customary five minute warm up walk and then went into the running intervals:
60 sec run / 120 sec walk (total 24 minutes)
45 sec run / 105 sec walk (total 10 minutes)
30 sec run / 90 sec walk (repeat until I quit)

At about the 30 minute mark, my mouth began to feel like cotton. In other words, dry as desert sand. Thirst began to overwhelm my senses and since I don't carry water when I work out, there was nothing to relieve the thirst. However, I continued.

The workout was getting to be more difficult. Everything was tired. My thighs, front and back, felt like when you lift weights to the point of exhaustion - you know the feeling - just a little shaky and very tired. But I kept going.

Even though it was only 72F, the sweat was pouring off me in rivulets, down my face, down my chest, down my back... it was like I was out running in the middle of summer.

At about the 45 minute mark, I began to feel like I didn't want to go any farther. At the 55 minute mark, I did NOT want to go any farther. Although I had wanted to do five miles today, the four mile mark was as far as I was going so I stopped. I was about a mile or so from the house and walked back which was a good cool down.

I believe dehydration was the problem. I've been drinking eight to ten 8 ounce glasses of water every day but beginning at dinner I usually switch to iced tea and I drink quite a few glasses of that. There are arguments on both sides of the coin about the diuretic properties of tea, but I'm not sure that five or six glasses between dinner and bedtime accounts for enough to dehydrate me. It may be that I need to drink more like twelve glasses of water. I have no idea what the answer will be, but I will be experimenting to find out.

I set no records today. I'm glad the next two days are walking-only days. It will give my legs some needed rest and recovery time. Added to the 4.0 miles in 55 minutes were a total of 20 minutes of walking making today's total:
5.2 miles
75 minutes
564 calories burned

Wow. I'm sorry you experienced all of that. My chiropractor (a champion bodybuilder), says we all wake up dehydrated. Drinking 16-oz of water when we first get up in the mornings is so important.

I DON'T CARRY WATER EXCEPT IF ITS HOT WHICH WOULD BE MOST OF THE TIME DOWN THERE. I TRY TO 2-3 GLASSES OF WATER BEFORE I WORK OUT AND THEN TEA AFTER BUT I ONLY DRINK 1 OR 2 GLASSES OR CUPS OF TEA A DAY. NOW ITS HOT TEA BUT IN SUMMER I SWITCH BACK TO ICED. SOMEDAYS IT JUST SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE THIRSTIER THAN OTHERS. I KNOW I USUALLY DRINK 2-3 BEFORE MY WORKOUT THEN 4 MORE AT WORK AND 1 OR 2 AT NIGHT BUT YESTERDAY I HAD DRANK 4 GLASSES BEFORE GETTING TO WORK AND 6 MORE AT WORK. THEN I TOOK A BOTTLE TO CLASS WITH ME.

Water hydrates you but also keeps all the aches and pains away. Never let yourself be without - carry it with you - and continue to do all the things you're doing - it's will enable you to be the best you can............

I hope you figure it out soon. I tend not to get dehydrated often, but on my really long walks I get intense hunger pangs. I have started carrying a handful of dried fruit or nuts with me which gives me just enough fuel to finish my walk. When I walked the 10k I carried water with me. Be careful and take care of yourself!
