Day 143 - Taking it easy today

Three of my four NCAA football teams won their games yesterday. Maybe America's Team will pull its collective head out of the sand today and figure out how to win.

The projected T-storms for yesterday did not materialize but they're still in the forecast for today. Come on rain!

Even so, it was nice and pleasant when I went outside this morning for the easy cross training day. I have planned Sundays as the wild card day and if I need to miss a day, Sunday is the one scheduled for it. However, the streak lives and I did my twenty minutes.

The last three days have reminded me that I'm only human and so are my legs. They've been tired, so I promised myself that I would do an easy walk this morning and call it quits. I listened to the promise.

I walked twenty minutes with no tired legs, no sore legs, and no hint of shin splints. The legs feel good today; rest is probably a good thing sometimes. Tomorrow I'll jump back in with a more intense workout.

Another plus note - - As of today, I've lost a total of 55 pounds since starting this program.

    An easy day every now and then isn't a bad thing. I just have to make sure I don't let them become too frequent.

Day 142 - My legs are really tired now!

Hallelujah! It rained yesterday and we got over a half an inch of rain here! My poor lawn had almost forgotten about moisture and was thinking about turning itself into the Sahara. I'm sure it was grateful for the reprieve.

It's cloudy again with more T-storms in the forecast - I really like T-storms!

It was cool again this morning with high humidity. Once I got started, the humidity was evident.

If you read my blog for yesterday, I wrote that I would be doing a walk today because my legs were tired. Well, they still are, but when I went outside I decided to do a one minute jog / one minute walk for the entire duration of the workout today. I had no preconceived distance or time plan.

I got going after the warm up with the 1 jog/1 walk scheme. I went down a couple of new streets and just kept going. Let me say that my legs ARE STILL TIRED and I suppose it's possible that I'm building up the muscles... I can tell by looking at my legs that they're changing shape. I noticed in the mirror earlier this week and my chest and shoulders are changing shape, too, for the better. It will be a while before I look like an Olympic sprinter but we'll see, haha.

About four miles into the workout I shortened the jogging times down to about 45 seconds instead of a full minute. At five miles I switched the workout to 30 seconds jogging followed by 30 seconds walking. I continued that way until I hit 6.00 miles. My legs are really tired now!

I finished the workout at 6.20 miles and 98 minutes. With warm up and cool down, today's workout was:
7.00 miles
110 minutes
850 calories burned

    I just ordered a couple of pairs for compression shorts. They are supposed to help with muscle fatigue during the run. Have you ever looked into them? Might be worth a shot. I went to Under Armour but I'm sure tons of places have them.

I was originally going to get some post race recovery compression tights - but they are a lot more expensive and may be overkill for me right now.

Day 141 - Another day of tired legs!

It was another nice morning in the DFW Metroplex... cool and cloudy with a nice breeze. Although it was this temperature once last week, it felt cold then but felt wonderful this morning.

After a five minute warm up walk, I started the running intervals in the following scheme:
1 minute run / 2 minute walk repeating for 30 minutes. Following that, it goes to a 30 second run followed by a 90 second walk. I normally go for four or five miles.

Today my legs were incredibly tired and I can feel slight lactic acid buildup in both legs while running. I think that helped limit how long I was able to run, especially after the first thirty minutes.

I'm looking forward to Saturday and Sunday and plan to go walking both days and let me legs rest.

With a total of ten minutes for warm up and cool down, today's totals are:
4.70 miles
70 minutes
558 calories burned

Day 140 - Legs are sore today

It was cool and cloudy this morning, in fact it was pretty darn dark outside because of the cloud cover. According to the weather gurus, we may be done with the heat wave of 2011.

Today was scheduled for jogging, long and slow. I started with 3 minutes on and 2 minutes walking. It didn't take long to discover that my legs are really, really tired today. Usually during and after a jog or run, my legs don't bother me at all, except for the occasional bout of something that may be shin splints.

Today was the exception, possibly because of the added speed on the running intervals yesterday. No problem, I think they should be tired once in a while, although I think I may need to increase the stretching after the workout.

At about the thirty minute mark today, I changed the times to 90 seconds jogging and one minute walking. At 45 minutes, I was too far away from the house to quit, so I continued on and changed the interval times to one minute jogging followed by one minute walking.

I stopped at the 5.04 miles at 75 minutes. With the warm up and cool down, today was:
5.64 miles
85 minutes
683 calories

    Your consistency is an inspiration to me! I have been averaging two hours of cardio a day for the last couple of weeks. I am going to try and keep that up until the snow flies, then I will probably let myself cut back a little. I might start walking the stairs up and down on both sides of the building I live in... I could do a loop from one side of the building to the other.

Day 139 - Running faster/walking slower

I got a later start than planned because there was lightning and rain this morning. With the summer we've had, I had almost forgotten what those were. The last two days have been over 100F again with yesterday clocking in at 106F. That brings the total number of days over the century mark to 70 for the year, breaking the past record of 69 days in 1980. It's been brutal, but yesterday may have been the last one this year.

After the little rain shower passed, I headed out the door for today's workout. The plan for today is running/walking intervals: one minute of running followed by two minutes of walking; repeated for a total of 45 minutes regardless of distance traveled.

As I got started after the warm up walk, I must have kicked it a little faster than I had planned because it seemed to be a little more taxing than my interval runs in the past. The next few running intervals confirmed that I was going faster because I noticed I was walking a lot slower on the two minute walking recovery periods.

The running periods were more difficult than they've been which is not a bad thing. I believe we have to keep challenging the body or it won't adapt and make the changes we want.

At about the thirty minute mark, the one minute running periods became pretty taxing so I cut it back to 45 seconds. At about the 45 minute mark, my program switched to 30 seconds of running followed by 90 seconds of walking. I'm glad, the 30 second period was just about right!

I finished with 4.03 miles at the one hour mark. With warm up and cool down, the total covered today was:
4.63 miles
70 minutes
561 calories
