I got started this morning well before dawn, about an hour and a half before dawn, in fact. How dark was it?? Well, it was sooooo dark that I shared the running path with a female runner who was wearing a coal miner's hat with the light on! It was great.
I got started early because I had a full day planned and I just got home to add the blog for today. Although it's been up to about 108F today, it's now cloudy, dark, and very windy outside. The radio was talking about showers east of Dallas and they really didn't think it was going to get this far west, but we always hope. Storms in Texas usually move from West to East, so we're probably out of luck.
Today was an interval day. After the warm up I got going on my 1 minute run with 2 minute recovery periods of walking. At the 45 minute mark, I switched to 30 seconds of running followed by 90 seconds of walking for recovery.
Today was pretty good. I was able to run up Cardiac Hill for the full 30 seconds. I think the cross training walk yesterday helped.
In addition to the 5.00 miles on the workout, there was 0.63 mile walking for warm up and cool down.

School started this week although it doesn't affect me much. I go out early enough that I don't have to worry about kids on bikes or high school kids in cars. As the days get shorter and cooler, I'll change the workout schedule and start going a little later. However when I make the change, it will be to a time after school starts in the mornings, mainly so I won't have to dodge bikes, hot rods, or maniac bus drivers!
I've got three sons. #3 son got settled in his dorm room over the weekend and started classes yesterday at his new out of state university north of here. #2 son moved from approx 7200 miles east of here and just got settled into a new apartment about 3775 miles WSW of here. Best of luck to both.
After sleeping more than normal over the weekend, I decided to change the workout schedule this week. I've kept the normal M-W-F routine, but on Tu-Th-Sat I'm doing a cross training walking plan. The idea is to let the body recover from the daily pounding I've been giving it over the last 100+ days.
With that, I'll do the hard workout three times a week and walk the other four. I'll re-evaluate after this week. I don't think any of us should do the same workout routine day after day and I'm flexible enough to change as needed.
With that, I set out for at least a twenty minute walk today. As I got going, I mentally upped the distance a couple of times, finally deciding to go around five miles.

I'm back in The Metroplex this morning. That's what we call the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area. Over the weekend, I didn't see any rain but did see the remnants of a localized rain shower. You know, that's where you drive through an area and the roads are wet but nothing is falling at the time. It was in a little town way south of Dallas with a population of about 800 folks, two of whom I happen to know.
I was lucky enough to 'score' some fabulous BBQ Brisket from them. He is a nationally ranked BBQ competitor and let me tell you, makes some great stuff. Yes, I brought some home!
While I was gone, I received an early birthday gift of a new pair of New Balance running shoes, just like the ones I have except they are one-half size bigger. I got my old pair back in February and I've just about worn them out. I've got the new pair on now, breaking them in. They feel great!!
Every once in a while it feels good to get away and let the batteries recharge, so to speak. Today I noticed that it helped on the workout, too.
Today is the first day of the week and an interval day. The first 45 minutes are 1 min run / 2 min walk. The remainder of the workout, up to five miles total, is 30 seconds run / 90 seconds walk.
After the warm up, I knew today was going to be good. I got some much needed rest over the weekend and on both Saturday and Sunday the workouts were limited to walking. Combined with the naps and extra sleep, I pretty much felt like King Kong today.
I completed the five miles today in 72 minutes and at the end, I was not physically spent. Warm up and cool down was a total of 0.75 miles walking.

I'm still out of town and slept till about 0730 this morning. Once awake, I slammed a banana and a bottle of no-name water then it was out the door.
Sundays are my day for walking and nothing more. Sometimes I feel like doing several miles, sometimes I feel like doing only 20 minutes. Today began as one of the twenty minute variety.
I had a nap yesterday, late morning to early afternoon, that was about three hours in length. It reminds me of some of the naps I took in college after a semester was over - the kind where the body wants to catch up for some of the sleep that didn't happen during the semester, for whatever reason.
I've seen papers written on both sides of the issue. Some say that you can't make up for lost sleep and some say you can. I'm here to say that it not only can be done, I've been doing it since I was a fraternity pledge oh so many years ago.
So yes, you can catch up on lost sleep and I think I was doing exactly that yesterday. The title of yesterday's blog was "tired" and the title of today's blog is an extension of yesterday, because I not only slept late(r) today, I had an early afternoon nap again today!
My head felt better today when I woke, though. Yesterday I felt like my head was being hit with a sledge hammer. Today I woke from the nap pretty much clear headed and I felt good.
This morning when I went for the walk, it was an easy sub-seventeen minute walk (it counts for cardio if it's under 20 minutes, so I've been told). Tomorrow starts the grind again.

So I'm out of town today and the time zone is an hour or so different so I didn't wake up until 0630 this morning. Well, it's not really different, I'm just tired this morning.
When I got started, I decided to just to a cross-training walk today instead of the aerobics. 4.56 miles later, I really don't have much to write about (and I hate laptops anyway) and there were no dog attacks, snake sightings, cross country teams, or anything else to make this more interesting.
So Happy Saturday to everybody, I've got to finish stretching and then do a road trip.
