Boyle's Back Yard

Sunday, August 07, 2011

I just had a blog all finished, spell checked etc. Posted it, and it said "done for a long time but nothing happened. Im writing this on Word, and will copy and paste just in case from now on.

Boyles Back Yard is just across the street for the ex Billy Ks, which closed last Friday because the owner raised the rent dramatically on the third business which had been there which explains why the character keeps changing. The owner plans to open his own business there, and everyone plans to boycott the place from now on. You have the pizza place and Boyles both selling beer on two other corners, and various bar foods at Boyles.

Boyle had agreed to let us have the Inaugural Cornhole Classic there (a double elimination corn toss tournament for 64 teams) in September, so the Kiwanians have to patronize it some. Our hope is that the tournament will be a successful, growing event, either once or twice a year. If its annual, Tom hopes to make it a qualifying event for the national champion event.

Boyle's Back Yard

For any locals, Boyle's Back Yard it at 11th and Nebraska. The place across the street (Billy Kay's) closed last Friday because the owner raised the rent on the third tenant, which sort of explains why the business and character kept changing. The owner wants to open his own business there, and everyone claims to be planning to boycott it the next time.

Boyle's used to be a mexican joint, but disappeared for some reason. They have standard prices, TV's, and a lot of noise. It's also an outside joint (at least the part we were in) including the bar, and has a roof so you have shade and a breeze. If they would turn the TV's off (or the sound off) it would be a fine place.

Boyle has given us permission to have the Inaugural NoPiKi Cornhole Classic (a corn toss tournament for 64 teams) there in September, so the Kiwanians have to patronize the place a little.

Easy Day

I put NTI Shadow back in the notebook today, and it's fine, but the desktop was stubborn. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) claim I'm not protected, so I tried to do a short scan, but it took off on a complete system scan. AVG is perfectly happy, so I guess MSE is more picky.

the BW wanted a hamburger tonight so we went to Boyle's Back Yard. I had a vaegiburger and a couple of beers, she had a hamburger and a couple of O'Douls. I'm not sure who was the more sinful.

We found 59 shows of the Midsomer Murders, which the BW loves, so I have to go watch the fifth one now. They last an hour and 42 or 43 minutes, so one takes care of the evening.

I think the veggie burger probably came in less calories. You only had one beer. But what the heck , it wasn't bad. We got have some pleasures.
I had a cup of sorbetto today. Blood Orange flavor, took me right back to Italy. It's not something I do everyday.
Besides I hiked today besides my water aerobics and I burned almost 2800 calories.
Tomorrow I am going on a longer hike.
Right now soaking my feet. Smile!!
Take care
Tisha

My counts looked pretty good until dinner. We decided we just had to have tacos. Between that and the Mexi Fries I was 15 g over my top fat allowance. It was definitely sinful and definitely yummy. I hope you enjoyed your indulgence as much as I enjoyed mine.

Yesterday I uninstalled the NTI Shadow from the laptop, and it did seem to make a difference. Today it was terribly slow on the desktop when I was on Sparks, but just fine for everything else, so I left this one alone. Now Sparks is pretty much back to normal, so I guess I'll put NTI Shadow back to the laptop.

Now I need to get the BW to use the laptop to keep it from being a total waste. I just wish I hadn't sold the old laptop, but we learn by doing.

Glad things are working out. Congrats on the weight loss!

BTW, what's "BW"? I am guessing the W stands for wife, but I can't for the life of me figure out the B part of the equation!

I lost another pound, too!!! YAY US!!!! emoticon

I usually inherit my computers from WH. The problem is that I am so uncomfortable with the technology that he spends a lot of time with advise and problem solving. I guess it's still a useful tool, but it's also a chronic headache for me and for him.

Computer Problems

Thursday, August 04, 2011

I recently had my first computer virus, after using a personal computer quite a few more than 20 years. After a lot of expense and frustration, I formatted the hard disk and started over. I also bought a second computer so I had some way to get on the internet if something like this ever happens again. the old one (desktop) has a 64 bit processor but uses a WindowsXP (32 bit) operating system, and the new one is a notebook with a dual processor and has a Vista 7. The operating system for the desktop fits on two DVDs, which was a shock to me at the time, and the operating system for the notebook takes four DVDs.

I was a little surprised when I first had both computers running to find that the one one took about twice as long to move from one web site as the old one, but I rationalized that the new one isn't always better than the old one, and went on.

The reason I was able to recover is that I have an external hard drive for the desktop. I bought speakers and a wireless keyboard and mouse for the laptop as well as a new external hard drive. I couldn't find the CD with the Shadow software that I use to automatically back up all my files, pictures, and music, so the two computers are pretty much interchangeable, with a memory stick to carry over anything I want to move - I haven't linked them to an internal network.

I was using the "backup" command for both computers because I couldn't find the commercial program CD, and almost paid for another, but decided to search one more time, and did finally find it. I installed the backup program on both computers, which is nice because it keeps copies of several generations of your files and you can use Windows Explorer to look the stored copies over, and recover just the material you want.

The problem with that was that this computer suddenly got a lot slower, and it wasn't until yesterday that I realized that the difference started when I added Shadow to the computers. I think that the backup program and two antimalware programs watching every move that you make might be a little too much security. So far I have been living with a slower computer, but I am thinking about removing the backup software.

My husband has four computers that he uses consistently. I don't know that any one of them is his insurance plan, but each does things a little differently and each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some of the time, I think that my one computer is one more than I really want.

I used to have multiple computers for that very reason and I suppose I still do. I have an old Mac laptop that I only have used a couple times when my PC laptop has had issues. I guess we can call them insurance! hehe!
