Pleasantly Surprised

Sunday, July 06, 2014

I originally started to blog to help keep me on track with my exercise. However four weeks ago, my husband and I left on vacation to visit family in Calgary and later in Ohio. We ended up travelling 7300 km over a period of three weeks (plus a day). We spent a total of nine days travelling which of course involved eating out. The rest of the time we were visiting our daughter and later my brother-in-law and family. I knew that would be a challenge and my goal was to try to not gain any weight.

We arrived home this past Monday evening but due to the Canada Day holiday and another day trip to take our nephew to stay with his grandmother (plus fatigue from travelling!) I have only gotten back to Spark today. I went to weigh myself when we got back but discovered that I needed to replace the batteries in the scale. Imagine my surprise when I finally got on the scale this morning and discovered that not only did I not gain weight but I was actually down by almost 2 pounds! Bonus! emoticon

In spite of often not having much control over what I was served, spending hours in the car travelling, no regular exercise, and often not getting in all my water, I still managed a small loss. While travelling, we usually have a quick snack first thing in the morning so that we can get on the road and then stop later for a late breakfast or sometimes lunch. My favourite breakfast is an omelette usually served with hash browns but I found most often I could choose fruit instead and if that wasn't an option, I just asked for my meal without them. Supper (or lunch sometimes) was usually easier when I generally chose chicken or fish, skipped fries in favour of a baked potato and of course always had a salad or veggies. Meals served by relatives usually offer little to no choice, and I couldn't turn down a glass or two of wine from my sister-in-law but somehow I managed to avoid gaining a pound.

Last year when we travelled I know I gained weight because I indulged much more. I still had a great vacation this year and feel much further ahead in reaching my goals in spite of being "off track" for the past four weeks. Now to get back down to business!

Best laid plans sometimes go astray!

Thursday, June 05, 2014

So the plan to walk downtown to my hair appointment today (probably a 25-30 minute walk one way) didn't quite work because of threatening skies and lack of time. However I had two or three errands I wanted to accomplish downtown so the alternate plan became to park about two blocks from my stylist's and then get in some walking while accomplishing my other tasks after my appointment. The result was about 20 minutes of walking - considerably less than if I had walked to the appointment but on par with the amount of walking I have been doing.

My other accomplishment today is of course doing a blog post for the third day in a row!

Thanks Betty. Have not really blogged or reached out too much for friends on Spark previously so no we haven't been friends before but there is no time like the present to start. Maybe that is one reason why I haven't stayed the course so much - because I wasn't communicating with others on the site. Half portions are a good idea if I can get them. I won't be able to take leftovers with me to finish the following day when we are on the road. We like to stop for a big breakfast after travelling a couple of hours each morning but my omelet always came with home fries which I will should pass up.We generally didn't stop for lunch as a result but we will have snacks with us in the car. I always find that the sodium when eating out is a bit of a killer for me although I do not have BP problems. Interestingly enough one of the healthiest dinners I had last year on our journey was at a truck stop!

Thanks too Randi. That is the way I feel too (but maybe I am sometimes justifying my laziness!) some activity is better than none. Once we reach our destination, I should get some activity trying to keep up with our active 18 month old grandson whom we haven't seen since last summer!

Good job keeping your commitment to walking even when you could've parked the car right at your hair stylist's! Even a little bit of activity is better then none & it will help you stay motivated to keep going!

Hi, and welcome back. sounds like you are getting back on track. Walking emoticon as much as you could today was a good start. Enjoy your vacation but try to have half portions of everything. That has helped me in the past. Wishing you well as you restart your journey to a healthier you. Your new Spark friend (unless we were before and I don't remember!) Betty emoticon

Procrastination

Wednesday, June 04, 2014

Yes I procrastinate about a number of things like making phone calls, answering email, exercise (of course!) etc. All-nighters to complete university essays were common - back in the day. I guess I felt I worked better under pressure.
As a teacher, I definitely learned to plan ahead for at least a few days at a time but I could easily put off marking at times.

Now I procrastinate about exercise - frequently. I can so easily get distracted by other things. Today was a prime example. This morning I checked some of the Spark exercise videos that I had marked as favourites about a year and a half ago and decided on a strength training video (I'm trying to alternate walking days with ST). I was going to work through the exercises after I had something to eat but I kept putting it off.

Long story short - I never did do the video BUT I did do some of my regular strength training exercises - after supper! The good news is I did get about 20 minutes of exercise in anyway but not what I had planned to do. emoticon

Catching up

Tuesday, June 03, 2014

So my goal to blog daily so far is not quite there! lol! It didn't help that we went to Georgetown to our son's on Saturday so that we could attend and cheer him on in his first triathlon of the season in Milton on Sunday. He had his best time yet for the distances he was doing.

As for me, there was no time to walk, exercise or blog on Saturday before we left BUT I did get in at least 30 minutes of walking on Sunday since it was a LONG trek to the race area from the far end of the parking lot where we were parked. I should have turned my heart monitor on sooner when we were walking to the race area since I only tracked about 65% of the distance in. Later when I had my watch in my pocket, it got bumped and I discovered that I burned a LOT of calories mainly standing around and walking just a short distance! When I tried to track the walk back to the car which had a gentle slope upwards, I discovered that my monitor wasn't tracking properly. For some reason it wanted to record that I had burned ONLY ONE calorie in the 17 minute trek back to the car!! Needless to say, my recording on the exercise tracker of calories burned was a bit of a "guesstimate"!

Hot muggy conditions and an afternoon of running errands after a meeting and trying to dodge raindrops left me too tired (my favorite excuse!) for a proper walk or other exercise (should have done some strength training) last night. I did get some exercise going from errand to errand but I didn't track it.

Today I was going to walk to an appointment but heavy rain and storms again threatened and my husband wanted me to drive so he wouldn't have to pick me up if it was raining when my appointment was over! (it wasn't). However the air had cooled so I did get out for a nice brisk (like the wind) walk for about 20 minutes after supper.

I'm going to TRY to blog daily for the rest of the week but after Saturday, posts will likely be few and far between if I get here at all. We will be travelling to Western Canada and then to the States to visit family for the rest of the month.

Even if your heart monitor did not catch the exercise, your body did! Have a great trip out west.

New to blogging

Friday, May 30, 2014

Blogging is not something that I have really gotten into but I have read that keeping a journal can be an important tool to being successful with weight loss and management long term so I will give this a shot!

I can usually do a pretty good job of staying within my calorie range and tracking food but my downfall is lack of exercise! I usually have to push myself to so something although some days it is easier than others, I find it too easy to get distracted by other things!

I have only been back on Spark for less than three weeks but so far I have managed to get in at least some exercise 3-4 times a week even if, like today, I have to push myself! I realized I had forgotten to get a cheque ready for the mail before my husband went out, so I walked up to a nearby convenience store where I could post it. I then took a longer route home and managed to get close to 20 minutes of walking in.

I'm hoping that blogging about my exercise (or lack thereof!) will help to keep me motivated to get some exercise in most days.
