Grassroots struggle for GMO labeling

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

I just read PENNYAN45's blog about GMO labeling, and I decided to write my own. It angers me that the labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms requested by so many citizens has been blocked by the threats and political manipulation of companies like Monsanto. I was glad to read that there's a grassroots movement in California to require the labeling of genetically modified food. We have a right to know what we're eating!

Dr. Mercola has written several articles about the dangers of genetically modified food. You can find them on his site.

We have a right to know what we're eating and what we're feeding our children! emoticon

I find it is easier to avoid gmo if I buy organic seeds and don't eat grains, but I am concerned about what meat animals are eating, and that probably will never be labelled.

Thanks for drawing this to our attention. If anyone can get the ball rolling, it should be California with its boatload of celebs.

Thanks for this info Rejj. And if this does succeed in California, I wonder if it will have effects in Canada too? I hope so.

I hope the campaign succeeds! This is SO vital and SO important, and absolutely outrageous that Monsanto & Co can get away with stuff like that!!!! Spread the message, spread the Spark!

I just looked at this link - and found it very interesting.
I did not realize that California was also in the midst of a fight for labeling. That is good news. California is a much larger and more powerful state than Connecticut.
I hope we can all succeed -- in spite of the campaign funds offered to some state lawmakers.
Thanks for writing about this!

Attempt at Pekin Trail

Monday, April 30, 2012

I had the day off today, so my sister and I headed back to Orford National Park. We attempted to hike a newly opened intermediate level side trail in the woods.

There's nothing I enjoy more than walking on a carpet of pine needles,

and dry leaves.

Unfortunately, as the embankment got steeper, I was afraid to slip because I wasn't wearing sturdy hiking shoes. Lesson re-learned. It's also harder to keep my balance with all this extra weight I'm carrying. I'm working to fix that!

We headed back to the easier walking trail. Can you see the chipmunk behind that fallen tree?

We stopped for a snack at this lovely viewpoint.

Pond by the trail.

We stopped to do some grocery shopping on the way home, in order to re-stock on healthy provisions. It was a delightful day, and I have a lot to be thankful for!

Love the photos, what fabulous place to walk!! Good on you being safe -I sure miss wearing my hiking boots -they make such a big difference walking trails, but my toes won't tolerate them :(
Keep on walking these trails, and that extra weight will be history!

Third Walk on 3-Pond Trail

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Forecast for the next 6 days: rain. My sister and I wanted to take advantage of this last day of sunny weather, so after work, we headed back to 3-Pond Trail. Third time this week. The trail is so beautiful that we just fell in love with it. I feel that I'm getting fitter. On Sunday, we did the 5.5 km trail in 2.5 hrs. On Tuesday, we did it in 2 hrs. & 15 min. Today we did it in 2 hrs., with no conscious effort to increase speed.

Canada geese enjoying a peaceful swim on Lake Stukely.

Three-Pond is an easy trail, with exquisite scenery.

There's a picnic area overlooking a large pond about half way down the trail, where we like to rest and eat some fruit and nuts before continuing our trek.

This is a photo of the pond we see at the picnic area, taken from another angle.

Wow!! Such a beautiful place! I am so glad you are getting out and sharing your hikes with us! Way to go on increasing the times! It really does feel awesome to be moving and feeling better! I have never found their forecasting to be particularly accurate. Here is hoping they are wrong about your six days. They kept forecasting big snowfalls for us all year and we got next to nothing lol.

The creepy old house

Thursday, April 19, 2012

My sister and I are trying to take full advantage of the gorgeous weather we’re having. When my niece called us to join her for a walk on a trail where she likes to walk her dogs, off we were for a new adventure.

It was a lovely trail in the woods.

Some areas were quite muddy.

The trail ends in a large, open field. We can see Mount Orford on the horizon.

My niece asked me if I wanted to see the creepy old house she had told me about. I wasn’t sure! But I was curious.

Last year, she was walking the dogs in the field. All of a sudden, both dogs started running back towards the woods, away from the abandoned house, instead of playing in the field like they usually do.

My niece’s Spidey senses went off. She had never before walked all the way down to the abandoned house. She saw fresh blood at the entrance, and leading out into the field. She didn’t go into the house, but she called the police as soon as she got home.

The officer who was sent out to investigate happened to be one of her friends. When he stopped by to take her full statement afterwards, he told her that whatever happened in that house had occurred within one-half hour of when she happened by.

The officer told her that there was all kinds of weird stuff in that house, and that they would have the blood analysed for DNA. The police would also be keeping an eye on the place.

The house didn’t look all that creepy in the daylight, but I wouldn’t want to be there alone!

One beautiful daffodil bloomed right in front of that ugly house, a reminder of the overcoming power of life and beauty.

My curiosity satisfied, I was glad to get back on the trail. If we walk that lovely trail again, we will not be going back to that creepy old house.

Sounds like a scary movie. I wonder if you will ever hear what happened. Good thing the dogs sensed something was wrong.

That sounds like a close call for your niece. I agree with the others, that it was good that the dogs sensed danger and went in the opposite direction. The story gave me a creepy feeling.

Dogs are really smart, aren't they? Wonder what did happen there?

And you are out for ANOTHER walk - you are doing great! When I get past this darn test, I plan to be out walking again too. I'll be keeping you company. Well, at a distance of 3,000 km. :-)

omg. you brave souls. if there's a coyote in the vicinity my dog will bark and chase it away. more than one, she hides in the house and remains still and quiet. I take my cues from her.

What an adventure.

_LINDA 4/19/2012 2:48PM

Wow! What an adventure! So glad your niece didn't try to investigate any further. Probably a large predator got a kill of something and the dogs got a whiff of it and knew enough to scram. The house is in surprisingly good shape in spite of being derelict, no sagging roof or doors, etc. Its seems strange to have a house in the middle of nowhere..
Its a lovely trail, its so neat when moss grows on rocks and fallen trees. But walking in numbers is a good idea if the kids are using that place as a hang out with that graffiti there.
Enjoy your hikes, but do stay safe!

Second Walk on the Three-Pond Trail

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Another amazingly beautiful, sunny Spring day! After work this morning, my sister and I headed back to the 5.5 km Three-Pond Trail. We had enjoyed it so very much last time we walked there. There are advantages to only working part-time (24 hrs/week). (The other side of the coin is the size of the paycheck.) emoticon

I need to correct something that I wrote on a previous blog. Orford is a national park, not a provincial park.

This lovely brook is at trail's entrance.

The trail will look entirely different once the trees get their leaves.

We walked by this big porcupine who was snacking on leaves.

WOW!! Great photos!! Fabulous you were able to get a shot of a porcupine!! We have seen evidence of one all around the trails we walk, but have not spotted the normally elusive shy critters!! Some lucky person did see it here and it was posted on the weather channel.
