I've been strugglingSunday, April 17, 2011
I've been gaining weight. I had gone down to 150 lbs. at the beginning of March, but I weighed in at 165.5 lbs. this morning. That means that I've re-gained 15.5 lbs. My ticker is going the wrong way! ![]()

You have gotten some great advice from those who commented before me. (I plan to use some of it myself.) Isn't it great to know that you are not alone? You are among friends - all who care, all who have been there, and all who can help you get back to where you want to be. Report Inappropriate Comment |

Gosh. So many goal-hitters that I know are struggling with (about a 15 lb) gains right now. It's been 2 years since I was at my low weight. The honeymoon is over and it's SO hard to get the spark back. Clean eating is SUCH an effort. And vigorous exercise is mentally tough to start. I'm with you, but I'm going to try to lose maybe 5 lbs before July 3rd. Work is just too stressful to try for more. And then over the summer (my vacation), I'll try for another 10. It sounds like you have refocused and know what you need to do to get back on your path. I have found that the ability to figure out myself what I have done wrong and the steps needed to correct it, are coming to me now and I recognize and act on them. In the past I would just give up and quit. It sounds like you are making progress with the overall improvement. We will all slip and fall from time to time, but when we quit and don't get back on is when we fail. Keep up the progress, and don't get discouraged, learn from it and Grow Smaller because of it. Good luck - you've taken an important first step by writing about your experience and re-setting your goals. This happens to almost everyone, I think. I've been (mostly) maintaining at my goal weight for about a year, but I've had a couple of episodes where I slacked off and gained weight back some weight for no good reason. (I gained weight for a good reason, once, too. My husband and I took a gourmet wine and food tour in France - every pound I gained was worth it One thing I've learned over the past year is that when I re-commit, it's helpful to apply some or all of Spark's "getting started" principles again. In particular, I don't try to be perfect across all dimensions immediately. You know that phase in the past where you were really rocking the healthy eating and exercise program with very few glitches? Don't assume you'll be that person on day one or week one of your re-commitment phase. No doubt you can probably pursue a few more challenging goals than the goals you first set for yourself when you started Sparkpeople, but don't try to be perfect from the get go. Set some medium-sized goals for that first week or two, and then ramp up.) Also, when I've fallen back into some junky eating, I find it helpful to identify a couple of foods/meals that "scratch the itch" but are either very healthy or relatively harmless. For example, my go-to very healthy scratch the itch snack is Wallaby Low Fat Vanilla Yogurt with fresh berries - it's a substitute for ice cream and I enjoy it just as much as ice cream. My "relatively harmless" snack - for when I have the mindless munchies - is 94% fat-free microwave kettlecorn at only about 25 calories per cup. Even if I eat 8 cups, I've done hardly any damage to my diet. Having those two snacks available helps me adjust to healthier eating faster than a pure "clean eating" approach. But everyone is different - some people need to go cold turkey. Report Inappropriate Comment |

I'm sending all kinds of positive vibes your way, and I agree with _Linda that the emotional element has to be a part of the fix. You may already be dealing with this... but one thing I know from being in your shoes (regaining after a successful loss) is that there's something to be learned here. "What's eating me?" is a valid question to ask yourself. Sometimes even asking the question sends strong signals to go eat! But figuring out what it is that's "eating me" can also help me stop. And then, "is eating helping with this?" Sometimes in my case, it's the reluctance to make a decision or start in on a project I feel I "should" do. Sometimes it's fear, anxiety, anger. Recognizing it, looking it in the face, naming it, "I know you. You are fear of change," and telling it, "you are just a feeling. You are temporary. I do not have to eat to numb you." Observe it changing in intensity as you acknowledge it, possibly write about it, or talk to a friend about it. The victory of dealing with it without eating... this time... is incredible. It's important to recognize that eating is still an option, and always will be: but do you have to make that choice this time? Knowing that NOT eating is an option, too will strengthen you for the long term. Rooting for you all the way... - Barb Comment edited on: 4/18/2011 7:37:45 AM Report Inappropriate Comment |

There is always a reason for emotional eating. You have to take a good look to see what is causing it and if there is something you can do to fix it. Just trying to eat clean and get a little exercise won't help if the problem remains and keeps causing you trouble. Take a look at what your feelings are when you get the cravings and what caused you to feel that way. Then try to deal with it in an alternate, non food fashion. When something upsets me, I either turn to some ground pounding exercise, or my apartment gets cleaned like it never has before. If you are not the physical type, get busy with your hands and mind. Play a challenging mind game online, or scrapbook or craft, something to keep you busy and your mind off the stress. I wish you all the best solving this stress and getting back on track. We are here for you if you need to vent, seek support or just tell us your day to day struggles, Hugs, Linda Report Inappropriate Comment |

How frustrating for you - but you are not alone. We all seem to go through this. And you have done the most important thing - STOPPED going in that direction. The first part of the stopping was the blog you just wrote. And it sounds like you have found renewed determination. The second part will be following through on the renewed resolutions you have made. You CAN do this. You have lots of people here on spark to support you - you can and will do this! Curious, are you tracking foods BEFORE you eat???? Sit down and plan out all your meals and snacks, then log each day before you eat. Keep yourself accountable!!! I have BEEN there dun that WAY too many times. As we get older it is so much HARDER to take it off. Be SURE to include strength training 3 times a week. Muscle may weigh more, but in the long run BURNS fat!!!! One thing I have been doing, is being faithful to exercise, eating within my calories, and MOST of all, keep coming here . My daily visits with Spark people, keeps me focused too. So STICK to your plan.... Report Inappropriate Comment |
