My children were watching a show on Nickelodeon, or Disney earlier...and it had a situation where one of the main characters, a nice looking young man, was being pursued by a girl, about the same age, who wasn't the ideal cute little teenage girl. She was heavy, and wore glasses, and was clumsy and goofy. Of course, this was played for absolute comic effect, because, of course, she couldn't be taken seriously. I kept shaking my head and saying "Why is this supposed to be okay? Why is this supposedly funny?" Because heavy girls aren't allowed to be attracted to cute guys? Because fat girls are OBVIOUSLY funny and it's okay to ridicule them? I hate that this message is still considered okay. I feel sorry for overweight teenage girls, and in some ways, I feel sorry for overweight teenage me. It was 30some years ago, and I still remember what it feels like. I really wish this weren't considered okay anymore.
