Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables

See this Youtube video about how fruits and veggies, usually thrown out due to their appearance, have a new life by a French supermarket chain. It has dramatically cut down on waste and is such a success they have problems with the produce being sold out!

The ugly or misshapen fruits and veggies would normally be tossed out causing great amounts of food waste. The supermarket chain is challenging others to join the crusade. They took the strange looking produce and sold it for 30% off. This helps everyone get their 5 fruits and vegetables in each day. The Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables have their own section in the store. They also sell soups and juice drinks made with the produce.

    Thanks for sharing. I think we have a somewhat similar operation in Steve's Produce - a produce stand that has low cost produce that typically is not as pretty as the supermarket's, but which also usually tastes better than the supermarket's.

I've been away for a bit. We had 2 deaths in the family in the same week. An aunt on one side of the family and an uncle on the other. These were 2 of my many aunts and uncles I knew the best. They were actually the final 2 of all of my aunts and uncles. (Most of their spouses are still alive.) So sad for their families. We were prepared for one death but the other was a shock.

I also planned and implemented 2 field trips. That takes a lot of work. They were fun but exhausting. One to the Wildlife World Zoo and one to the Phoenix Children's Museum.

We had our annual jog-a-thon and Field Day so I was moving a lot on those days.
In one week alone we had a field trip, a local newschannel landed their helicopter at our school, we had a water conservation puppet show, and something else I can't think of right off hand.

One Sat. I went to a morning Lenten "retreat" which was a great way to start my Lent off right. It was about Lazarus from the book of John. I felt a real sense of community as we shared our experiences and perceptions. It's times like this that help me on my spiritual journey.

We had a big teacher in-service. Did a lot of walking there. A lot of sitting, too, of course. Ha ha.

I went to a class on learning about the new Roman Missal of which the implementation of will begin the end of November of this year. I'm glad I'm learning about this now so I can prepare myself.

Over the weekend I listened to half of cd #6 from The End of Overeating by Dr. Kessler. I also exercised Fri., Sat., and Sun. Not much but at least I did it.

I started tracking my food again. I know that is the only way I will be successful.

I'm taking my first webinar class this week. I've never done this before. Hope I sign on correctly.

From now until the end of the year it will be hectic. Especially May. I don't know how we survive May. I don't know when I'll have time to get on but I'll stop in when I can.

They are supposed to start putting a new roof on my house today. It rained yesterday so I'll see when I get home if they were able to start today. I can not wait until that is over with.

    Prayers for your families. It's never easy to say goodbye to our loved ones.

The Lenten retreat sounds wonderful!! I'm going to a Catholic Womens Conference in April and I CANNOT wait!!!! It will be my first one and I can't tell you how excited I am!!

    First, you have my sympathy on the deaths of your aunt and uncle. I am so sorry to hear that. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
You sure have been busy with school. Good teachers are blessings!
How great that you got a Lenten retreat in. I hope you are having a good Lent.
I haven't heard much about the new Roman Missal. I need to research that more.
Hope your webinar class goes well.
Also, hope your roof project goes quickly and without any problems.

Here is a link to a question and answer article with Dr. David A. Kessler.
He has helped me so much but recently I was forgetting all that he has taught me. An article in the March issue of Eating Well mentions his book so it reminded me that I have to listen to what he has to say.

This is the article in Eating Well March 2011 thatreally hit home with me:

I am addicted to food.
It is a problem I have.
I have been doing so well fighting this addiction until recently.

The good news is that today for lunch I brought chicken breast, cucumbers, and orange slices. (I just had the orange slices for an afternoon snack and they were delicious!) For breakfast I had eggs. (extra egg whites). Unfortunately I had 3 pancakes (sugar free syrup). Yes, 3! Can you believe it? Pancakes are not good for me because these were not whole grain or whole wheat and simple carbs just cause me to crave more. But for some reason I'm craving simple carbs.

I am going to re-read Rachael Gorman's article and I really need to listen to Dr. Kessler's book again (It's my one and only book on "tape"/cd).

It's time to get my addiction under control.

    I knew I had a problem with carbs thirty years ago (I'm 53). Now it has a name - Food Addition. Like SHERLYN-WILL commented, I too have to leave all that stuff alone or I cannot stop!

I watched a sitcom the other night and the Husband was eating Pizza and thinking about the next piece and calculating how many people to how many pieces were left... he ate faster to get the last piece... That Is Exactly How It Works on Me!

I am addicted to Sugar & Starch foods!
I Love My Healthy Foods! Since changing my mind over by keeping the bad food out of my house and buying fruits and veggies, and Greek yogurt this past year I do not crave those bad foods!

    I'm just like you!! I think the carbs aren't good for us!! Try to not eat any after 2:00PM... I think anything before 2:00 is okay, but in moderation! I haven't been eating very many except for in my fruits. I gave up bread & pasta. I've been trying to stay away from them as much as possible. I did buy some whole wheat pasta, but haven't made it yet. (cook it el dente)

I have a quiz I posted on 9-17 about finding out if one is addicted to sugar.../food ....

I have to leave all that stuff alone or I cannot stop!

I am also an emotional eater... I posted a quiz about that too in January 2011...

    Thanks for the links.
I read the article on Dr. David Kessler & took the food addiction quiz.
I think I have food addition issues, but the quiz didn't indicate that. I think I answered the questions based on my behavior since joining Spark People. I still feel there are triggers I have to watch.

    Great Read!

Doing some of them; need to add some of the others into my life.

Things that jumped off the page at me:
- Orange Juice in the morning - I have an 8 ounce glass of 100% orange juice each morning with my cereal.
- Brussel Sprouts & other veggies in that family - they are my favorite!
- Nuts - love them!
- Stretching - as I have gotten older, I just have to do it if I want to feel good.
- Garlic - used it alot in my cooking.
- Change workout - better able to stick with it if I can change it to fit my needs.
- And a Really Big One: Stop Faking It

One of the biggest causes of stress is trying to live in a way thatĺs not consistent with who you are. Ask yourself: Am I doing what I want to do? Am I getting my needs met? Every day, run a reality check on what you've done. When it says that your actions aren't true to the kind of person you are, make sure you listen.

Spend time with people and on activities that make you feel happy and challenged in a healthy wayŚnot drained or burned out.
Love that one!!!

- Take time to meditate and get in touch with Spiritual side! A daily must for me!
- Stay connected. Family & close friends are my rock.
- Dark Chocolate. Have it once in a while.
- Avoid 2nd hand smoke - hate it!
