The down side of having a hunting dog

Saturday, February 27, 2010

After a nice evening meal with friends it was time to take pup for a walk. Normally we walk/jog for about 4.75 miles but because it was late, cold, and windy and the sidewalks/streets are icy we took the short route and a walk. We got home and I released her on the back yard. While she was doing her business I noticed a little rabbit trapped between the garage and the neighbor's fence. Called my dog but by that time she was done with her business and caught the scent of the rabbit. Needless to say she caught the rabbit and all happy and prancing brought it to me. I am yelling at her to drop it and leave it, just like an idiot barking commands at her and calling my hubby. No one would listen to me.

She finally dropped the rabbit at my feet, but it was too late, no broken skin on the bunny but there was extensive internal damage. After bringing the dog inside I went back out to see if there was anything I could do but the bunny was dead. I wrapped it on some towels placed it inside a box and placed it in the garbage.

I know it is the dog’s instinct and did not punish her, but I am torn to pieces. She caught other things before, a robin, an opossum and 2 squirrels thus I should be getting used to it, or should I. Every time that it happens it tears me apart and break my heart; by the way the opossum survived.

I cannot part with the pup as I have grown to attached to her but I do not believe I will ever get used to this.

Ughhhh
On a sadder note it is weigh in day well after I have about 10 hours of sleep.

Good night everyone.

Upward and Onward we go.

my dog is a mix hound/shepard and as she doesn't chase things like she used to, she has downed more than her share of local wildlife in our yard. the opossums, woodchucks, squirrels and crows were a little easier to part with. the bunnies and the kitten were much harder! it is a dogs nature to chase, not to harm for the sake of harming. i hope the rabbits find a way out of the yard.

Unfortunately a hunting dog is a hunting dog. I would feel the same way of being attached to the dog and sad for the rabbit.

Sorry hon! emoticon

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

It is incredible after so many years of being on call I still cannot fall back sleep if I get woken up during the first hour after falling sleep. Did not fall back asleep until 4:30 AM and had to get up at 8:30 AM, uggggg. As such I am tired, very cranky and still need to hit the treadmill. Need to put my steps, cardio and strength now.

Keep on sparking everyone. ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

What about if you worked out intensely during the day to tire you out so you won't stay up after you wake up overnight? Just a thought.

We are beautiful people

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

After reading a bIog today it made me sad to realize the warped view we have of ourselves and the agony it put us through. We are NOT ugly, fat, old, young, stupid or dumb. We are individuals with differences. What makes a beautiful person beautiful? The media make us believe we are ugly if we do not fit a mold someone created as the perfect person.

Look at all works of art; what one believes to be a worthless piece of trash others pay millions for it believing it is a priceless work of art. My husband and I went to the Museum awhile back and I fell in love with the installations of Juan Munoz being displayed. I felt such emotion towards his art to the extent to write to the artist expressing my passion for his work and attempting to interview him to see his perspective on what he saw, felt, what he was thinking while creating the art work. He passed away and I never did have the opportunity. My husband’s perspective on the installations was “hmmm it is OK, nothing great”

My point being we do not fit in a mold, what is beautiful to one might not be beautiful to others. We are all beautiful and special in our own ways. I hope we have the opportunity to know that what we are doing here at sparkpeople is for ourselves not to fit into someone’s mold of beauty and perfection.

Sparkpeople provide us with an incredible opportunity, to be anonymous, pursuing a goal for ourselves not someone else. It is stated all over the website that this is a change in our attitude and perspective of ourselves, it is a life changing opportunity for us to do something we want and feel right about us.

Best wishes.

Upward and Onward we go.
