First Colonoscopy

My motto this year is "New Year, New Me" and that includes catching up on all the doctors appointments that I have been putting off.... for years. A couple of months ago I visited my OB-GYN after mssing several years, luckily I had a great visit. Today I went for my first screening colonoscopy. At 53 I know that I should have had this test 3 years ago. Losing my stepfather to colon cancer last year was a great motivator in finally getting me there. Keeping a positive attitude made this a non-event. I basically stopped eating three days ago, and the prep day was all liquids. The test today was easy, I don't remember a thing. I'm glad I went as they found a polyp and removed it. I will get the test results in a couple of weeks. Next on the schedule is a mammogram then I can breathe a sigh of relief and concentrate on something else.

After the colonoscopy we headed to Ruby Tuesdays for my first meal in days. I had studied their nutrition fact sheet prior to going there but once there was tempted to choose the Southwestern Spring Rolls, not something that I had planned on getting. But thanks to SP's great calorie tracker I still had a successful day and did not consume more than my daily quota. For me the calorie database is one of my favorite tools on SP.

It's been 3 and a half months since I got serious with this and I have lost 18 pounds and am feeling wonderful. Thank you SparkPeople for a great site!

getting healthy

This year is all about getting healthy. In the past I have put off annual exams and preventative visits to the doctor. New year, new me.... yesterday I saw the OB-GYN and got that done. On the way home I made a dentist appointment and got my dogs a new veterinarian. Today I scheduled my 1st ever colonoscopy. Woo Hoo... I'm on track!

I am happy to say that the nurse yesterday was very impressed with my weight. I am not satisfied with my current weight but I appreciate that she thought it was fine emoticon

Keeping track of what I eat and my exercise is definitely helping me achieve the positive results. Thank you Sparkpeople for your wonderful website!

    I feel the same way about this finally being my time - I'm making an appointment to see a dentist after a hiatus of about 5 years. You're doing a good job keeping up with the tracking and exercise *and* getting all those appointments scheduled! emoticon

shopping healthy

Yesterday was a success, I did get all 120 minutes in on my gazelle. Went to Walmart today to stock up on healthy food before the next big snow and got sidelined at the exercise equipment. I am really enjoying the gazelle and have seen remarkable results in just 6 weeks but I think I need another piece of equipment to keep it interesting. I do have not one but two treadmills but one won't come on and the other is stuck in the highest incline setting. Now while that is an awesome workout I just can't do an hour at that angle. I have back issues and I think that a recumbant stationary bike would be a good addition to my home gym. Walmart has a Gold's Gym model 390R for just $247, I tried it out and it felt very comfortable. I am hoping to go out this weekend to get one.

So I went to Walmart to stock up and I am very pleased with my selections. Bought plain yogurt for the dogs, Light 'n Lively Yogurt for us, and my something new is Yoplait's Greek yogurt. Other healthy purchases; a variety of frozen vegetables, bananas, apples, and whole grain wraps. Not one piece of junk food made it into the cart, I wasn't even tempted!

Weight loss so far is 9 pounds. I'm happy with that since I've only been at this for 6 weeks. I had a doctor's appointment today and I am very happy to see that my home scale and the doctor's scale agree (although I do realize that a scale is not the only indication of success).

first ever blog entry

I've never posted to a blog before this very minute but now is as good a time as any to get started. Sitting here getting caught up with Sparkpeople feels great because I just finished a good 60 minutes of cardio. I don't know why I waited so long to get serious about taking better care of myself. Just 6 weeks into this new lifestyle and I am already feeling much better. The scale shows a 9 pound weight loss but I'm toning up so it feels like I've lost much more.

Hard to believe but I just had a 1/2 cup of All Bran with a little Cool Whip Free as a snack and I really enjoyed it! Who knew that combination would appeal to me?? The Sparkpeople Nutrition tracker is a HUGE help. I check it in the evening to see what I am still lacking and try to fill the void.

Tomorrow is a new day and I've set a goal of 120 minutes of cardio, I hope to rise to the challenge.

    Great first blog! I don't do well with the tracking. I'd rather write it on a paper form or in a journal. But you are so right it is a great tool.

    Congrats on your new blog. It was hard for me at first to blog....to put me out there so to speak. You are doing very well with the cardio and I agree the nutritional tracker is a HUGE help. I have been off of it for a while but found that I NEEDED to get back to it. Good luck on your weight loss. With your determination you will make great strides on your weight loss.

    There is a lot to offer here on Spark people. I am still finding new things. Or something different to try. The exercise listing is amazing. Keep going it sounds like you are doing great. Have you tried Yogurt and cereal? I have that for breakfast. Sue
