Happy New Year

Saturday, January 01, 2011

There were no fireworks, no champagne toasts, no confetti nor hats and noisemakers. It was me, my computer, and the remote control. I clicked around the news stations but didn't find ANY channel that had a New Year's Countdown. I am in the same time zone as Moscow, Russia, GMT +3, 8 hours ahead of Times Square, NYC and my HOME in New Hamsphire. Sky News from the UK said Happy New year to those in Moscow so I watched about a 30 second clip of fireworks. Woo hoo, big deal, it's another day, a new week here, a new month and a new year, just another day here. My husband went to bed around 10:45 since he had to get up at 5AM for work.

I got up at 7AM and watched the ball fall in Times Square to ring in the new year back home, sent a text message to my son but didn't get a reply.
Then I got dressed and went for a 2.36 mile walk outside. It was 3 laps around the compound in cool 68F weather.
We are having my husband's traditional New Year's dinner of cornbread and butter beans with chopped turkey thigh meat. Of course in the real world, I would use salt pork or a ham bone left over from Christmas dinner, LOL.

As far as resolutions go, I don't generally make them and especially since I joined SparkPeople with the healthy lifestyle change. I would be happy if I released 5-10 lbs this year but I honestly will be happy with what I can do!

I wish you all a happy, healthy, safe and prosperous New Year.
We CAN do this!

happy new year to you! i was asleep when the ball dropped on the east coast. so thank you for waking up to watch it! sounds like you had a nice calm evening. nothing wrong with that... i think sometimes its much better than going out and risking getting hit by a drunk driver! let me just tell you... it was warm like a spring day up here in the mountains... so if you like the cold... you're in the right place!

Happy New Year! I found your blog when I was getting my 'search' point. Wow! Anyway, your dinner sounds just wonderful. I live in a big apartment complex and we had a soup lunch in the social room and games were scheduled for later but only four people played a game of scrabble. I went down to help put the tables away and general cleanup last night and had a nice visit with the ones who were there. Verne showed up and asked if there was ice cream and I found a whole gallon in the freezer so he was happy to get some. Just before midnight three of us went up the the game room to watch the fireworks across the way at the Fairgrounds. They didn't last very long. Then we all went our separate ways to our apartment.

I live in Chehalis. WA. It is very cold, lots of frost but no snow. The frost hasn't gone away and this is day three.

That New Year's dinner sounds like a good tradition. Beans are good luck, cornbread is traditional New Year's fare, and leftovers are frugal! All good stuff.

Happy New Year!

I won FREE groceries!

Friday, December 31, 2010

Today when my husband and I were checking out at the grocery store, he used his debit card to pay. The cashier stopped and said something about it was free. I didn't understand what they were saying because they weren't speaking English but we did in fact win! Apparently the grocery store is running promotions and give aways and we won our cart of groceries so we didn't have to pay the $100 for the food! If I had known this I would have bought more. That was pretty neat!

Nothing is happening here tonight, it's just another night that turns into just another new week and another new month. They don't celebrate the new year because it is not a muslim holiday. Alcohol is forbidden, against the law and can get you deported after jail time.

Happy New Year. Have a safe and happy evening.

A hurricane blew through

Thursday, December 30, 2010

It rained about an hour on Wednesday, got everything wet and made driving horrible.
Today we had a mini hurricane for about 2 hours. The wind started first bending the trees and blowing sand all over, then the thunder, lightening and the downpour, it rained sideways in sheets, you couldn't see to the next block. I know, big deal, it rained. It's a big deal in the desert here, there is NO drainage system anywhere so when it rains, the water floods everywhere and stays because there is no place to drain it to. Mosquitos and bugs will be out everywhere.
My kitchen floor is soaked, the carpets 2 feet inside all my doors are soaked, the window sills have leaked and I heard a drip, drip, drip somewhere inside the hollow part of the bedroom closet but we can't get to it.
The patio is flooded again but my gardener is out there with his squeegee cleaning it up

This picture was taken from my yard across the street

This picture is looking down to the end of the street

this is looking up to the main road

It's still dark and overcast in parts of the area so don't know if there will be more rain or not but the temperature sure did cool off about 10 degrees.

No plans for new years at all, it's just another day, just another start to a new week, another month. I never did see what all the hoopla was all about.

I would LIKE to........ in 2011

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

I won't call them goals. YES I KNOW the whole theory here is to make a goal and work towards it. I have set goals and tried to reach them and it just doesn't happen so I am just going to say I would LIKE to.

I would LIKE to release 5 pounds. YES I know that sounds too easy BUT when you are taking medication for Thyroid problems, it makes it difficult to lose the weight.
I would LIKE to be able to gag down 8 cups of water daily. Some days I'm just not thirsty enough.

That is about all I can say about next year. I already exercise 5 days a week usually for 90 minutes or more.

I did get out and walk for 2 laps today which is 1.36 miles in 30 minutes. It's still 95F during the day here

I think they sound great. Rememeber they just need to be things to work toward. It is about progress not perfection. I'm with you on the water. I do drink alot of tea. Have a great week!

Maybe you should try tea. There are so many different flavors out there. You're bound to find one you like! I got chocolate strawberry for Christmas. I didn't even know that existed!

Good luck with your goals in the coming year!

I just recently started medication for my thyroid, I'm hoping it'll help me lose more weight! And I always hated drinking water, but something I did was to add Crystal Light to it so that it was flavored. I could easily get in my water then. Eventually I've gotten to the point that I drink it plain and only on occasion have a flavored water!

way to go girl! make a list and check it twice daily! you can reach those goals! just take one day at a time - you are so amazing and do so much - it needs to pay off for you! stay strong! spring is around the corner - or so they tell me! lol

My Christmas

Sunday, December 26, 2010

Well it's the day after, December 26 so HAPPY BOXING DAY to those who celebrate/observe the day.

On the 24th we had a nice dinner with 3 of our friends. My friend Maria brought home made spring rolls, YUM! I made a beef tenderloin roast that I saw on the Food Network, I made roasted potatoes and carrots, lemon-Dill green beans that turned out yucky, mashed butternut squash that in my opinion was very bitter, ginger peach jello cups that were good, canned (yuck) cranberry sauce, our friend brought a sweet and sour German cabbage that was good and chopped apples and pineapple with a fondue chocolate dip, then my friend Maria brought her home made spring rolls YUM! I made pecan pie that was more like pecan soup and a cherry pie (from the can) The Gravy didn't turn out at all and I forgot the whipped cream for the pies. I felt dinner was yucky, everyone else said it was good. YES, I did use very careful portion control.

We watched Christmas movies and watched the Santa Tracker on the computer.

Dec. 25 was just another day here. 90+ F, sunny and not a cloud or snowflake in the sky. DH went to work since Christmas is forbidden and against the law and Saturday is the start of the work week. I watched the Santa tracker on DH's computer and cleaned up. I also had to wrap DH's presents still. Santa had already been here when I woke up.
DH got home early from work but not because they were nice and let hime off early, they just finished a job in another department.
I got a much needed laptop sleeve for when I travel, a aluminum water bottle instead of using a plastic milk bottle and 3 yummy Body Shop burning scents. DH was pleased with his calendar I made him. I took pictures of his Harley and made them into a calendar using a plain monthly calendar that I bought and pasted the pictures in it.

We pretty much vegged out and watched Christmas movies and ate left over spring rolls that were pretty good!

So today, December 26 I got out and did 3 laps of walking on the compound without wheezing too bad or coughing. Still at a slower pace though.

Hope you all had a GREAT Christmas.

Unlike Sue, bob and I are in denial about snow coming our way, haha and refuse to believe it until we have to shovel our way out the front door. Fortunately there are enough leftovers to live off of for the next week. emoticon

I'm happy that you're feeling better, and it looks as if you guys had a nice, festive time! The meal probably wasn't as bad as you thought.

We're waiting for a major blizzard here. A foot and a half of snow and high winds. Bill is off stocking up on supplies, batteries, water, candles, etc. Brrr! At least we have a woodstove and fireplace.

Now aren't you glad you're there?
