World Diabetes Day!

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Today is World Diabetes Awareness day. I am currently outside the USA in the Middle East, You would think that in a country with a population that is over 1/2 diabetic there would be SOME kind of activity, program, exhibit, expo or something in the malls, but sadly nothing. Even if there WAS something happening, nothing would be posted or announced until after the event took place.
I am diabetic so I try to draw as much attention to this "disease" as possible. I would love to find a magic cure!

I did get out and go for a walk this morning. I left the house at 8:40 and the temp was 80F, got home 30 minutes later and the temp was 86 but it was hot since there is no shade on my walk route. I hope the temps go down a little bit more so I can get in a better walk.

That is my story for today.

You are right, there is not much attention placed on this day. In fact until I read your blog, I was not aware that it is World Diabetes Awareness Day. Thanks for the information.

November 13

Saturday, November 13, 2010

On this day 29 years ago I gave birth to my son at 2:55AM on a Friday morning. Unfortunately it has not been his lucky day. We did talk to him and wish him a happy birthday. I just hope his luck gets better very soon.

I did my 2 1/2 miles of Walk Away The pounds and about 10 minutes of dumbbell exercises today.

It feels like since the sandstorm the other day that temperature has gone down a bit and it's starting to cool off. Not much mind you but some.

DON'T FORGET: November 14 is International Diabetes Awareness day!

I've had a 2 day rest from exercises unless you count up and down, in and out, stretch on toes, squats, bend over, up stairs, down stairs, up stairs down stairs while doing laundry. Other than that, not much going on. '

the Noon prayer screaming was fairly quiet today, they all must be in Mecca screaming at people there. The compound is quiet too, it's nice not to have screaming, littering brats outside all day.

Tomorrow is my son's 29th birthday, he was born on Friday the 13th and bad luck has followed him all his life so far. Let's hope this year breaks his bad luck!

Today is my Friday, the day when I feel very lazy. I didn't get upstairs to do my exercises until 9:00PM...........when my husband turned on a yucky movie I didn't want to watch.
I only did a 35 minute 2 mile Walk Away The Pounds video
10 minutes of dumbbell workouts
It may not be much for today but as far as I'm concerned, I DID IT! 5 days in a row now that I did it! It may be a lot more too since today starts my husband's 2 week vacation.
This is the holy holiday of the Hajj or Pilgrimage when BILLIONS of disease bearing muslims from all over the world converge on Mecca to perform their religious rite. It's mandatory for every muslim in their lifetime. After that they are supposed to sacrifice a goat/sheep, get a hair cut, buy a new outfit and donate money to the poor. The ritual itself only lasts about 3-4 days but these hajjis stay for a month or 2 and some never leave. Just about everything except grocery stores are closed for 3-4 days, some government offices and businesses are closed for 2 weeks an my husband's company is one. Since we spent too much money during the summer we don't usually go anywhere during this time. So with him home for the next 2 weeks, I'll get a lot of exercise done.

Have a GREAT evening all!

W3/D4 + S'more Saudi Style

Tuesday, November 09, 2010

Today is day 9 of Leslie Sansone 21 Day Walk Challenge. I "walked" 3 miles, jogged a couple of intervals and briskly walked. Then used the firm band for a 8 minute video.

I also did day 6 of the Fit, Firm and Fired Up DVD and a 5 minute core bootcamp video. My knee is still doing ok but I know when I have to slow down or not make a certain move.
Woo Hoo, go me!

I also walked to the compound mini market and back, took about 10 minutes but in direct sun since they cut all the trees down last year. I was ok for a while but I could hardly breathe on the way back, that 85 degrees in full sun was a b!tch

Ok so a story for you.
I was craving s'mores a few weeks ago. When I was HOME in the USA this summer I bought a package of S'more kit for 2 that had 4 halves of graham cracker, 2 miniature Hershey bars, 2 large marshmallows, 2 wooden kebab skewers and 2 tea light size candles (thought that was SO Freakin' funny).
So I did a check list, Yep, had the kebab sticks, had the tea light candles, but no marshmallows, chocolate bar or graham crackers. So on my weekly traumatic shopping trip I searched the entire store for these items. Ok, well not a graham cracker in sight anywhere so I had to settle for English Tea Biscuits-a cross between a cracker and a cookie. Found the marshmallows-they would have been a perfect fit for the hippie 60's they were that colorful. The Hershey bars here are thick as are the Cadbury bars and the Galaxy chocolate bars, all thick, so I went with Cadbury.
Get home and when DH left on his business trip I broke out the secret S'more stash. Ok well the tea lights were vanilla scented, the marshmallows didn't exactly brown or even burn right but they did eventually melt. Plopped them on the chocolate bar and topped with the other tea biscuit and took a bite. EEEWWWWW, that Cadbury Chocolate bar had more sugar than Domino's makes in a year! It was NASTY but did I stop? NO, the next night I took 1/2 banana and sliced it on top of the "cookie" then added 1/2 piece of that nasty chocolate and proceeded to burn the nasty marshmallows (saw that on an episode of a Food Network show). It really didn't taste bad but I'll leave out the chocolate next time. When you are desperate, you will go to great lengths to satisfy a craving.
Just thought I would share one of my many escapades with you.

Have a GREAT Day

Cadbury s'mores! Mmmm-MM!! Cravings are the mothers of invention! Can't believe you cooked them over a tea light. On top of what, to catch the drips? emoticon

The things we do in desperation, haha!! So did the candles give them a vanilla flavor???
I'm going to confess something to you. I don't drink milk anymore because it bothers my stomach, I don't do soy of any kind, so I use almond milk as a replacement. Last week I had made some corn chowder, and needed to "extend" the last little bit of it to get one more lunch out of it. Well, I grabbed the almond milk, poured in enough to fill my thermos and off I went. Perfect, right?
Except that come lunch time I went to open the thermos and take a bite and do you know what I tasted? Vanilla! Seems I had grabbed the vanilla flavored almond milk that I use on my cereal and poured that into my chowder.
It was, um, edible, but I don't think I'll be doing that again, haha!

Way to go with exercise - I know about the smores - your story is way funnier than any that I have about them. We just end up sticking each other when roasting them.
Keep on moving and we will see that skinny you soon.

Wow! When you come back, you come back with a vengence! Great job on the exercise (and good for you for nursing that knee - take it from me, you DON'T want to irritate a hurt knee too much - I made that mistake before and it grounded me from exercise for a few days!). You did a great job juryrigging some s'mores... I wonder why they put so much sugar in the chocolate bars down there?

There was a woman who regularly attended a rocket lanch I used to go to, to watch her hubby lanch... she always had an umbrella... folks used to tease her a little, joking that she was hiding from falling rockets. It turned out that she was VERY sensitive to sunlight, and the umbrella made it bearable for her... could you do something like that on the compound, or would it freak people out if you had your own portable shade?

Take care, it sounds like you're doing good?
