December 7, 1984 - 25 years ago

Monday, December 07, 2009

On December 6 1984, in a blinding snow storm that closed major airports on the East coast for several hours and with a 3 year old and a 6 year old in tow, I boarded a PanAm 747 jet at JFK. 12 1/2 hours and 8 time zones later, at 1624 hours on December 7 1984, we landed in a whole different world, a land that time forgot. Saudi Arabia. The children grew up in this strange land, made friends they will never forget, visited foreign countries they will never get to again, experienced life that is difficult to explain to others, moved back to their birth country and are now grown adults with families of their own. 25 years later, my husband and I however are still here in the land that time forgot. WHY you may ask? The only answer I can give right now is that it's a job that pays better than a job in the USA, IF we could find a job in the USA right now. It pays the mortgage, car payment and drug prescriptons. It's warm in the winters compared to the snow and frigid temps at home in New Hampshire, it is better than trying to run 2 full households-one for me back home and one for DH here.
Do I like it here? NO, HELL NO, but like I wrote above, it's cheaper than trying to run 2 households and only getting to see my husband for 3-4 weeks a year. I have the internet, SparkPeople and my cross stitch to keep me busy.
We can't openly celebrate any non muslim holiday, I can't drive, women do not work in public, there is NO alcohol, NO pork, I have to wear a black coat like drape thing out in public but I do NOT COVER MY HEAD OR FACE. Before going on forever ranting I'll end that part here.

YAY, happy anniversary to me----NOT!

It's still overcast, VERY humid and cool here, if I didn't know any better, I'd say it was going to rain.

Happy Anniversary to you and ;you are so brave to stay with your husband even though you may not like it. Some say love for children come first but the husband should come first when the children grow up. If there's anything you'd like sent over to you let me know.

I think I would do the same thing to stay with my husband. Sometimes we have to make the hard choices to keep our families together. I think a commetment that is lost on some younger adults. Will you be able to retire back to the US?
We will be here for you and tell you all about the snow and ice.
We'll wish you a Merry Christmas!

You are a brave survivor, living where you need to live to make a living. Today, your 25th anniversary, I got the e-mail from my daughter in law at 1:30 p.m. central time, US... my son in on his way in your direction, and a bit beyond.

While online friends may not be the same as folks you can hug in "meat space"... it's better than being wholly isolated. I'd be happy to send you some of the major snow storm that's brewing here overnight tonight and through tomorrow, but I don't think I'd like the sandstorm you might send back. emoticon

Wow, and I complain about having to contemplate moving to New Jersey!! That's more than "foreign" enough for me. And to do this for 25 years and raised your family there....can't even begin to imagine.
One thing I keep meaning to ask you. I know what you can't get there for foods, and that what we consider commonplace here can be very "dear" there. What is cheap and readily available?

Robin I tip my hat to you - 25 years - wow - you are a strong woman to put up with that for so many years - and I understand the employment part of it all - and I would like the warm winters - it is freezing here today that is for sure! you really are an amazing person and I'm so glad that I've had the chance to get to know you. and so you know it is overcast here today too but like I said not anywhere near 80 - lol take care of you today! and smile because you are worth it!

My dad is ok!!

Friday, December 04, 2009

I'm so happy and relieved, my dad's PET scan came out clear, so NO LUNG CANCER! We're all very happy.

I stitched my way through the weekend too for the first time in over a month and finished the project. I finished the stitching part but I'm going to wait to finish it as an ornament.

so glad to hear everything is ok with your dad! I know it has to be a big relief. Also....just love the stitching you just completed. I wish my eyes were good enough to take up counted cross stitch again. Be sure to take another pic when it's made into an ornament.

Another month of no changes

Wednesday, December 02, 2009

Well, I did cardio, I did strength training, I increased my cardio, increased my calorie intake, I decreased my calorie intake, I drank more water, I peed more, and where did it get me? NO WHERE! I was 147 on Nov. 1, I went down to 143 in the middle of the month and now I'm back up to 147 again! There is also no change in my measurements either. This is so #^&%$@! exasperating! I did it once but I can't seem to do it again. I DO watch what I eat, I TRY to eat at my calorie level, I DO cardio 5 x a week(sometimes 6), I DO strength training 5 x a week, I DO drink 8 cups of water 6 days a week. I'm not going to give up but geeze this is so depressing.

It's going to rain again this weekend which is something this place does NOT need. Also means my carpets will get saturated again and start stinking and molding.

I have been dealing with the same problem. All I can do is keep doing what I have doing and hope that something changes. I know that I am eating better, and actually exercising so live style changes have taken place and that is important.

    A couple of things:

1) Don't weigh yourself within 3 days of your cycle. It will totally throw you off.

2) Decrease your sodium intake to under 2000mg per day while keeping your calories within the range recommended on Sparks.

I learned both last month and not only did the weighing in 4 days after my cycle help mentally but decreasing my sodium started to melt away the weight.

Keep up the great work and don't lose hope! Look how far you have come already!

Congrats on your commitment!!! It really takes alot out of you when working so hard doesn't appear to be gettin you anywhere. However, I just had a pretty similar experience and after my Doctor's visit-where I had bloodwork done-I actually improved my cholesterol greatly. Just think, your insides need to change and heal before you can see physical results. Know everything you are doing will make a difference.

Keep it up!! I'm going to add you as my friend so I can check on your progress-We're all in this together!!

You have made progress. You have a month of healthy living under your belt. Just focus on behavior and not the scale. I was stuck at a plateau for eight months. I managed to survive because I KNEW I was living healthfully. There was no other way. And then the plateau broke.

Live a healthy life!

My Dad is having a PET scan today

Monday, November 30, 2009

I'm on nervous today, my father is having a PET scan done to check for Lung cancer. My dad is 89 years old, he is on oxygen 24/7, he's had bypass surgery, he has a pacemaker, he's survived prostate cancer and so many other surgeries and illnesses. He's my daddy and I want him to NOT have cancer.
