ABCs of the forest

Sunday, January 08, 2012

A is for ABOVE and BEYOND...Does competition push you? It can but it depends on what it is for. For contests it competition does push me. For regular every day life stuff I'm not competitive. Does that make sense?

B is for BLC rounds... Newbie?(first BLC round) Oldie?(1-3 rounds) Goldie?(long time BLCer)? Former BLC team(s)? I'm a former but always a Pixie.

C is for CHILDREN...you have? I have a 14 year old stepson. He eats us out of house and home!

D is for DOWNFALL...what's you're biggest temptation? Hmmm, usually snacky stuff, but around here if you want a snack you have to make it from scratch so it's easy to avoid.

E is for EXCUSE...what is your most famous? How can we help you overcome it? Too busy! I use that a lot, especially on the weekends. If I spend 3 hours moving dirt I really don't feel like doing "real" exercise afterwards.

F is for FURRY FRIENDS...you have? For the furry kind we have 3 goats, 9 rabbits, 2 dogs and 3 cats. Of the feathered kind we have 13 chickens and 3 turkeys. Of the cold blooded kind we have bees! Ok, not really "pets" but we do have to care for them like our other animals.

G is for GROCERIES...what do you fill your cart with? Nothing! I don't go to the grocery store! But I do buy a lot of food at the farmers' market and it's all produce.

H is for HOME...what state do you call home? California

I is for INSPIRE...who or what is your roll model/inspiration? Joel Salatin. Most people don't know who he is, but to me he is one of the most influential farmers in the U.S. Visiting his farm and meeting him was life changing.

J is for JOB...What do you do for a living? I'm a landscape design consultant. In other words I'm a project manager for a landscape architecture firm.

K is for KEEP IT SIMPLE...What's your focus when short on time? Eating right.

L is for LOG...Do you use the Nutrition and Fitness trackers? I do, but I'm actually better with logging my food than my fitness.

M is for MOTIVATION...Which gives you more, Mirror or Scale? Scale. It's gratifying faster.

N is for NAME...What's the meaning behind your sparkname? rbrink is the first initial of my first name plus the first part of my last name. In the public realm I actually go by Rachel Hoff though. 21 was my soccer jersey number in high school.

O is for OUNCES...How many ounces of water do you consume on a daily basis? I try for 84 but usually it's closer to 48.

P is for PRODUCE...How many fruits and veggies do you consume daily? Definitely more than the average person since we only eat whole foods.

Q is for QUOTE...what's your favorite? "The wonderful thing about food is you get three votes a day. Every one of them has the potential to change the world. Now, it may seem a little daunting to think, “Oh my God, I’ve got to vote right three times a day.” And, you know, in fact, you don’t and you won’t. We all have our junk foods that we can’t resist, and that’s fine.

But if you get it right once a day, you can produce a more sustainable agriculture, a cleaner environment, diminish climate change, and improve the lot of animals. That’s an amazing power that we have, and we all have it." ~ Michael Pollan

R is for ROUTINE...Average number of days and minutes you exercise weekly? I want to get at least 20 min. every day.

S is for STATUS...Married, Single, Involved, Other? Married to the best guy ever!

T is for TIME...What time zone are you in? Pacific Standard. But don't let that fool you, I get up early every day.

U is for UNWIND...What is your favorite pass time or hobby? I love to garden (obviously) and write. I also find milking the goats to be meditative as long as they are cooperating.

V is for VACATION...If you could travel anywhere, what destination would you choose? I really want to take a cruise around the Mediterranean.

W is for WEIGHT WORKOUT...Do you follow a consistent ST program? I'm bad, I don't.

X is for "X" MARKS THE SPOT...What do you want to see happen these 12 weeks, other than the scale move? I get more energy and sleep better!

Y is for YESTERDAY...Do you allow choices to push you forward or dwell on them? I just keep moving forward. You can change yesterday.

Z is for ZERO...name one thing you couldn't live without? Whole milk. After reading Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food I can never drink or eat nonfat milk products again.

You give me energy to eat more whole foods. I will have to make a conscious effort to do this!

I love that you only eat whole foods. My husband wants to farm in the near future and is doing an apprenticeship with Greenbank Farms this next season.

Joel Salatin was the hero and inspiration for a farmer friend when we lived in Illinois. We bought all our turkeys, chickens, and eggs from him.. and he did rotation in a similar amazing way that was just awesome to see. :)

I love the Pets question for you!
I made a pact with myself to get in at LEAST 20 minutes a day. It's totally doable. 20 minutes is nothing and goes by so fast! Join me. emoticon

Taking our Health seriously

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

This probably won't be too popular with people, esp. SparkPeople, but I just feel like it needs to be said.

I'm sometimes bummed out by SP's articles and quizzes, like the one that says HFCS isn't so bad or the quiz that states that eggs from free range chickens aren't any healthier (when they have been proven to actually be much healthier than battery cage chicken eggs). Sometimes I just get the feeling that they just have to appease their sponsors.

I always double check "facts" touted by "experts". It's amazing what a little bit of research can lead you to....

I have been thinking that same thing. Not a very popular stance as this is supposed to be a great resource center for information, but they do have sponsers. I guess all you can do is re-check the information outside of this space. Take it all with a grain of salt, so to speak. emoticon

Owning It

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Im Fat. Im F.A.T. Not Phat, but Fat. Theres no way around it. I can't hide the fact that I'm Fat.

Ive been Fat for almost my entire life. Well, at least I thought so. Now looking at pictures of myself as a kid, I indeed was NOT Fat. I was just made to think so by those around me. Ive been called Fat all my life by those close and not-so-close to me.

Maybe if those around me hadnt kept telling me I was Fat I might have been healthier. Maybe if those around me encouraged me rather than tore me down, I would have loved myself more. Maybe if my parents had made food a four-letter word, I would have had a healthier relationship with it. Life is full of lots of what-ifs. We can only do what we can with what we have. There is no use dwelling on the evils of our past. It is time to move on.

Fat. Its not a bad word in and of itself. Websters defines it as thus: any of various compounds of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that are glycerides of fatty acids, are the chief constituents of plant and animal fat, are a major class of energy-rich food, and are soluble in organic solvents but not in water. Fat is only a bad word when people use it in a derogatory way. It only has power to make use feel bad about ourselves when we give it that power.

Biologically, we all need Fat. We have to have it to survive. Its energy. Its life. The problem is, I just have too much of it. Im not as healthy as I could be.

Being Fat does NOT make me a bad person. Im not lazy. Im not smelly. I dont eat junk food all day. I eat really good food, healthy food. I just ate too much of it.

Being Fat does NOT mean I dont deserve love. Ive had boyfriend make that the reason they dumped me. That was not really the reason, but it was an easy excuse for them to use. If it wasnt my weight it would have been something else. In the end, Im now engaged to a wonderful man who loves all of me regardless of size because he sees that there is more of me than just the wrapping. I never would have met him if those other boys hadnt left.

Im getting healthier, but lets face it. I will never be thin. I may be thinner, but thin isnt going to happen to me, nor do I want it to. Thin would make me unrecognizable in the mirror. Healthy is all I want and need. Whatever size that comes with is perfect for me.

Im owning the fact that Im Fat right now. It's one reason why I show how much I weigh on my counter. Im Fat, but it doesnt define who I am. Its just a stage of my life where Im at. Im not going to feel bad about it. How I look does not mean Im less of a person. But lets face it. No matter what, someone will judge me on how I look, even if I was thin. Youre always something bad to some. Too Fat, too thin, too tall, too short, too dark, too light, etc. Those peoplewell, those people dont matter ANYMORE.

35 lbs down! Thanks SP and the Done Girls!

Monday, September 15, 2008

When I came back to SP I was down 28 lbs. It had taken me a really long time to get there. 9 months to be exact. I was frustrated beyond belief, but no amount of frustration was going to make me quit. I wanted...no, I needed to lose this weight once and for all - even if it took me 5 years.

So here I am, 3 1/2 weeks later and I've lost an additional 7 lbs! That's 2lbs per week! Holy cow! What happened? I joined the "Done Being a Fat Girl" team. They are awesome. A challenge was posted last week and it really motivated me. I also started paying more attention to my sodium intake, adding it to my list of nutrients to follow. Oh, and did I mention the Done Girls? Yeah! Because of them I've ordered a heart rate monitor that shows total calories burned. I don't have it yet, but I can't wait until I do!

Thanks everyone for your fabulous support!

I'm back

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

I haven't really been on Sparkpeople lately. But I think I'm going to start using it more. I'm doing Weight Watchers along with meeting with a nutritionist and my doctor. So I have a lot on my plate but I really want to be successful at this.
