Please visit Joan_of_Spark's blog:

If you can't do without something - work it in!

If you can't do without something - work it in!

Life is too short to feel deprived. All the celery in the world is not going to make me forget that *_ _ _ _ _* that I am craving. Better to give in with a taste than to worry myself over trying to stay "good".

If you bite it, you write it. There is no free ride in life - if I take that taste, I also log that bite.

If I can do it, You can do it too.

That works for me too! I can't deprive myself of something I really really want. That doesn't work for me. I can practice moderation though. I can eat just one of something. Sometimes I figure out ahead of time what I need to do to burn off that item I want. Sometimes I only eat 2T of something. But I am still satisfied. I worked it in and got what I wanted. And I don't feel bad about it.

Spark on!

Thank you to the SparkBuddy that thought me vain!!

You thought it was vanity because I am worried about 7 pounds when you need to lose 50+ yourself.

Really - Thank YOU!!

As I responded to you my words reverberated in my head, "if I am not vigilant, 7 can turn into the entire 90+ pounds" regained.

No, we are not SparkFriends - but really, you are more my buddy for slapping me upside my head mentally! As I walked with Cathy this morning, I had my AHA! moment and I realized that truer words were never spoken!!

No, it is not vanity - it is survival. No, I was not upset with the person - I recognized it for what it is - a call for help from a person close to giving up.

Yes, I really did thank her! Her comment was from the heart, filled with the anguish of the obese, anguish I knew all too well.

I also look forward to celebrating when she gets back on track and reaches her goals!

Vanity? No. Guilt? Possibly. Human? Definitely!!

Y'all have a Sparkling day today! I know my day is going to Sparkle!
I can't describe how wonderful it feels to be back in control!
Telling myself, "NO" when I want to nosh! WooHoo indeed!!

Hi Linda, You can always bring me back to my senses. I have been away too long, just checking in. I had 3 cervical spine surgeries, front and back and lost the use of my left hand . They were hoping to get that back but it may take a year or more for the nerves to regenerate. I'm in therapy for my hand and I'm praying I'll get full use sometime. This is my first comment in a long time. You are as always an inspiration. I read your blogs and they always make me think. I am going to list my foods today and get back on track.     Linda,

On the surface I might tend to agree with your buddy, but on a deeper level I KNOW you are right. It is all too easy (and regretfully I know this from experience) for a small weight gain to turn into a larger, more permanent one. I also know that you should aim for a weight range, not a particular weight. Only in the sense that you should not panic if you end up 1-2 pounds over your "ideal" weight on occasion. But I believe that 5 lbs. is an acceptable benchmark to tighten things up. For that reason, you are smart to take action for your 7 lb. gain. Unless, of course, you feel that you would be comfortable a slightly higher weight, which does not seem to be the case.

Fantastic blog. How gracious of you to respond to the sparker that wrote the vain comment. You have come a long way and yes its a continual process to keep on top of your mantainence to refrain from starting to regain. To continue winning the battle each of us must get that aha moment when everything clicks, for some longer than others, for others they quit before they get there. Great that your back on track, never give up---your an inspiration for many.

Whether it's 50lbs or 7lbs it's relative. Big or small we all have the same issues when it comes to weight. If you let your guard down you will stop doing what you need to do to be healthy.
And besides it was your blog and you were voicing your feelings. emoticon

Great post! And what a great attitude. Someone told me that my weight is coming off so easily, and I got kind of mad/sad, because dang it, I'm working hard for every little loss. But you're absolutely right- I should have realized that it wasn't about me, they were expressing their own frustration with their progress, and instead of getting defensive, I should offer support to them. Thank you - you just gave *me* the head-slap I needed. :)

What a generous and kind response you've given here. It is SOOO hard (for me, at least) to prevent creeping weight gain; and sure, worrying about a pound or two may seem vain, I'm all too aware of when I weighed 230 and how easy it would be to go right back there!! Eternal vigilance is not vanity: it's realistic!! Necessary!!

I understand you being nervous about 7 pounds and you shouldn't feel bad or vain... I used to be a smoker. Some people can smoke OCCASIONALLY! I don't get it. If I pick up and smoke even a half of a cigarette I'll be back up to 2 pack a day in a week. Really! It's happened and I've had to quit all over again. Painful. Being overweight, I didn't understand how all of the skinny girls could eat what they eat, or not eat what they don't eat. But after losing 35 on Spark (with 25 to go)... I GET IT. I totally get it now. She'll get it soon too. Thank you so much for being so sensitive.

I have lost 50 lbs here and now I am trying to lose 5 lbs to get back to a healthy weight - and the 5 lbs is proving much tougher, but I know it does make a difference. The key is not to judge others as our journey is our own, and the 5 lbs I need to lose has been so much harder than the 50 I originally lost.

funny I just talked to someone about this today....
it was about how people do realize that at 10 pounds they need to do something and do it early- instead of those ( like myself) who get the 10 then get 10 more and well here I am at 50 and struggling and making a big deal over .5 a week loss. so woohoo to you to being 7 within your goal and knowing you need it to reach the goal you set.

CAPTHAMMER 4/1/2011 11:45AM

As someone who originally came on board with "only" 25lbs to lose, I've always tried to be sensitive how I phrased my complaints about difficulties reaching goal. But that in no reduces the amount of work it takes to reach goal or, if I ever get there, maintaining goal weight.

We had this same discussion yesterday on another team. Someone posted a blog "Do I Deserve to Be Here?" because like you she'd been confronted about having a relatively small amount to lose. The unanimous answers were "Absolutely!" It's a journey for everyone. And even at goal it's not over, it's an ongoing lifestyle change.

Hopefully, by writing this blog you've helped others see that everyone travels a different path. And that path continues at goal weight!

Best wishes and thank you for transforming what could have been an ugly comment into a wake-up call for all of us.

What thoughts must I express about you to get a "Thank you" blog? Would any of the following do it:

You lift your arms in pictures to look thinner! - Can't use this one, someone beat me to it.

When you weigh yourself you only put one foot on the scale! - I think I have a winner! emoticon

Of course I am joking! I enjoyed your blog above. I am thankful that you are one of my SP Friends. emoticon emoticon emoticon

WOW!!!! That is deep!!! You are right it is survival!!! Whether 7 pounds or 70 pounds we have to fight not to resort back to our old life. I hope that person finds the strength to get back on their journey.
