Change is good!

Saturday, December 06, 2008

I adjusted my Cardio this week, down to about 60 minutes, and my weight is moving again! I must have been under-eating for my over-achieving cardio!

I have lost 64 lbs! I am not going to find them ever again - they can just stay lost!

My advice today would be, "Surround yourself with people who have found the path to healthier bodies and go forward and do likewise."

Today I am 146.7! On to 145 and beyond! I am only 11 lbs away from my goal!

Life is sweet!

P.S. I like having my picture taken now! And DH loves taking it!

Congrats on the incredibe work. I see that you have put a great deal of work into your lifestyle change (I don't like the term diet since it sounds so temporary). Good work and keep it up.

On one of my "blogging adventure" days I ran across a guy that is not LOOSING pounds, cuz his reasoning was if you "lost" something you will eventually find it again.

He is "re-assigning" his pounds gone.......

It's all in our perception ~ whatever works for you, stick with it! You obviously have figured out what works for you!!

Congrats!

How do I handle hunger?

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

Today I was asked, "How do you handle hunger? Lately I have been so hungry even though I'm eating 3 meals plus snacks a day and getting all of my calories in! What are good low calorie snacks that will fill you up and keep you full for a while? That's my biggest weakness. I get hungry and then I overeat to try to fill myself up."

My reply:

I keep low-fat, no-fat yogurts in my fridge at all times. I try to eat slowly and savor like it was ice cream.

And in this weather I discovered I like cooked celery, go figure! And I like to cook it in thinned-out salsa. Yummy, filling, and very few calories - loads of fiber! Add any other low-cal veggies, so many go great with salsa!

I also will eat earlier if I get really hungry. Then I find I am not hungry at regular meal-time so I just let it pass me by. The worst thing I can do is to try to ignore my hunger. As you stated, then I go completely uncontrolled when I sit down to eat. So I try to appease my hunger. Those 100 calorie snacks help a lot but remember to drink plenty of water when you eat them. It will make you feel a lot fuller. I drink hot water often for my sinuses and that helps me too.

I eat my cereal dry and will eat that with "a spoonful of cereal, a drink of water" and repeat until the cereal is gone. Between the cereal and all that water my belly gets really full and I am no longer hungry. And it helps me to drink enough water for the day too!

I hope something will help you through the holidays. But remember, the only thing anyone can expect of you is that you do your best. You aren't going to fail yourself as long as you really do try. And always, always forgive yourself if you have a slip-up.

We are going to get through this, we will do it together!
Hugs,
Linda

    Great suggestions!!!

Since I've changed my habits ~ I've been waking with a growling stomach (a totally new sensation). I fullfill my needs with a protein for breakfast ~ either a broccoli omelet OR chicken, rice & broccoli.

I'm also eating smaller portioned meals 5 to 6 times daily (about every 3-4 hours). And if I take a couple days to prepare snacks that are readily available, I have less chance of straying to something less favorable.

I agree - those days when you think you will never stop feeling hungry ARE AWFUL!! I try to eat high protein high fiber with lots of water on those days....but sometimes I just blow it. You just have to pick yourself up and start again the next day.

My new favorite saying is, "This is not a diet it is a life style change. Diets come to an end but life is what you make of it!"

I love fruits and veggies as well, and you are so right about drinking water with them to make you feel fuller. Also getting enough protein and fiber in the mornings and lunch time will help stave off cravings later in the evening. Also if you avoid sodas you will feel less hungry as well. Sweet foods and drinks tend to cause you to want more food later. They act as appetite triggers. Interesting HUH!!!!

Thanksgiving is over, today is a new day!

Friday, November 28, 2008

I did good yesterday but the weight went up. It happens.

I did stay within my range and I did manage to do all my exercising and walking. So why did it go up?

Who knows. Who cares. Today is a new day and today I will eat all my fruits and vegetables. Today I will drink all my water. Today I will measure and weigh my foods.

Yesterday I wasn't able to measure and weigh but I chose smart choices. I did have dressing with gravy (1/4 cup) and I did have ice cream (1.25 cup) and counted them in. I didn't eat the turkey wing (I love the turkey wing!) but instead chose a small amount of white meat. No cranberry sauce. Corn from my garden and Calif. Mix frozen veggies with sweet potato - yes, I had a few of the marshmallows but they weren't candied yams, no sugar in them.

But this is the lowest I have been in 45 years and I guess that would be what could be called a major plateau. But I am going to go lower! I know it, I can feel it.

Onward I march in my journey to a healthier me!

I have reached my unwritten goal!

Monday, November 24, 2008

I had wanted to reach 148 by my birthday and today, Nov 24, 2008 - one day late - I am 148.8!

emoticon I did it one day at a time, one pound at a time, 1/10th of a pound at a time! But I did it! I have not been this low since Easter 1985 and was never able to maintain.

emoticon Now I am not only going to maintain but I am going to go lower! This is uncharted territory for me. Dangers may lurk around every table but I fear no evil for SparkPeople are with me!

62 lbs down, 14 go go!

This is me in my too large Spark T-Shirt wearing Size 10 Chic Jeans!

Little Setback - Exercise is sooo important!

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Just before my walk yesterday I received a call from my dad's home healthcare and had to wait for a phone call to see what I would need to do. Dad has Congestive Heart and a fluid problem.

So it was determined to take him to the heart doctor and I fully expected him to be admitted to the hospital again. Praise the Lord, they are going to change his medications and re-evaluate him next week. This meant he could come home.

Unfortunately it also meant poor food choices and no exercise for me. So I am back to 59 lbs down.

My reason for this update? To let new member see that this can happen to anyone, even someone following the program for 8 months now. We are going to have this from time to time. Being unable to exercise properly yesterday meant that my body was using 400 calories less than normally and it will take it's toll when you go over even just a little.

The important thing is to get back on track right away and I am doing just that. I will eat more veggies today and less starch (I didn't say no starch) and it will get my body back to normal again. Flush it all out with water! Lots of water!

**edit: I should tell you what I ate. I had 2 slices my bread with 2 Tbl peanut butter - 522 calories lunch - this would have been ok. But I made DH meatless lasagna and that added about 400 calories to my day when I got home with my dad. I have to estimate since I didn't measure *sigh*

I had my regular breakfast of fruit, yogurt, cottage cheese and had it again for dinner rather than pig out on the lasagna. Apparently the stress made me hungry. Long story short, I was over on my calories about 200 calories but under on my cardio by 500+ and my sodium went through the roof from all the cheese. Best guess is mostly water retention since it doesn't add up to 3500 calories over. But I have always been able to gain easier than lose weight. Just wanted to let you know it wasn't sweets or take-out.

Hugs y'all,
Linda

**edit 11/21 - back to 150.6! WooHoo!!
**edit 11/22 - down to 149.9! WooHoo!!

First, I'm glad your dad is able to stay at home. The hospital thing is hard on everyone.
Second, Look at you handle stress and a little setback. You seem able to take things in stride and come up smelling like a rose. That bit of fluff will be gone before you know it. Continue on your way. I am following your progress and progressing on my own by learning from you,

You'll take it off again. I know you will. I have had some tough days too. I have learned that when I am sleep deprived ....I snack allllll day. And when I am stressed and feeling traped....I run for comfort and sweets. These are good things to know about ones self.

Sorry to hear about your Dad but glad they can do it with medication and didn't need to hospitalize him. I'm sure your pound will disappear tomorrow; those things don't usually stick around for just one day of poor choices. It's probably the sodium.

It's really hard to stay on track with that kind of stress. The main thing is you got back up right away and will do well again.

You're terrific and an inspiration.
