I guess it's time I finally got serious about my health. What better time than the beginning of a new year? I have ended up over 200 lbs overweight, I have Type 2 diabetes, my blood pressure is slowly creeping up, and I've learned that I also have Celiac Disease. digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pu
I was diagnosed with diabetes in November 2007 and did a good job the first few months in watching my carb intake, but then I just slowly started to not care. Instead of finding alternatives for my love of sweets or developing new habits, I just caved in to the desire to have desserts and sweet snacks. I never took the initiative to start exercising. I have ignored the fact that my body is sick and have just tried to pretend I'm just fine. I'm finally facing up to the fact that I'm putting my life in danger if I don't take this seriously and do what I need to do to be healthy.
I was diagnosed with Celiac in 2008 when I saw an endocrinologist for the diabetes. I was kind of shocked because I assumed my son's gluten intolerance came from my husband's side of the family, not from me. But as I went gluten-free, I noticed a dramatic change in how I felt, the bloating really went down, and I actually started to lose weight. It made a lot of sense that I've struggled so long in losing weight since everything I've tried so far included lots of whole grains, mostly wheat. I was just sabotaging myself and didn't even know it! However, just like the diabetes, I started to *cheat* a little here and there until I got to the point that I was eating just like I did before I found out I couldn't tolerate gluten. And 10 of the 15 pounds I had lost came back.
I'm tired of feeling sick and tired all the time. I want to not only *feel* healthy, but to also *BE* healthy! So, this is the time to start over, to do it for my health, not only for me, but also for my family. I want to be around for a long time for my husband and four children.
The dietician suggested that I start off concentrating on going gluten-free first, so that is where I am going to start. Not only am I going to do that, but I also want to make sure I drink plenty of water , skip the sweet treats , and start exercising for 10 minutes a few times a week! . I've got to take this slow and make this a lifestyle change, not just a quickie *diet* fix to lose a few pounds. I am worth this and I can do it!
