How to lose 10 lbs a month

Friday, February 15, 2008

A SP member emailed me and asked me how I was losing 10 lbs a month. Well, it's only been 1.5 months since I started and I actually lost 32lbs. I totally don't expect that pace to continue, but my goal is to lose a minimum of 10 lbs a month until my goal weight.

So... this is what I have been doing so far and here was my response to her:

You can check out my SparkPage and look at my food and exercise logs.
Essentially, I am staying between 1100 and 1400 calories a day. Mostly organic food and protein shakes (I use soy milk and whey protein that I blend with some frozen berries or 1/2 a frozen banana.) I really focus on keeping to the low end of the carbs and fat and the higher end of protein ranges.

The real key, I think, is how much exercise I have been getting.
I am trying to average around 1000 calories burned a day doing cardio - 6 days a week .
I also do weights 3 days a week. I day upper body, 2nd day lower body, 3rd day back/core.

So, I do the elliptical for 35 minutes before work (I do the weight loss hills settings and keep my heart rate in the 120-140bpm range) and then I do it again after work. (plus weights 3 x week). One day on the weekend I do elliptical for an hour.

It's not easy and I would much rather go thru the drive-thru after work and then go home and veg on the couch. However... I would MUCH rather be thin & fit than fat & unhealthy. Been there... done with that!

Results Not Typical

Friday, February 15, 2008

Today, I read a blog post from a SP member who has lost over 100lbs.

She wrote about what kind of motivation it takes to really achieve substantial weight loss. It really resonated with me. I have a long way to go, but I have lost 32 lbs in 5 weeks. (I'd like to lose 70 more by fall.) How have I achieved these atypical results? And even more importantly, how will I keep the downward slide to "onederland"?

Here's how I have done it so far:

- Tracking every calorie and staying within (and often below) my target range.

- Elliptical sessions a minimum of 6 days a week (2-30 minute cardio sessions on weekdays before and after work)

- Each week trying to do a bit more (more intensity or longer cardio sessions, additional weights, take a new class at the gym, etc...)

I never thought I would say it, but I am excited to hop on the scale now! Every Friday morning when I get up... I hop and skip to that scale. (OK... maybe that was an exaggeration... I am usually not up to hopping an skipping at 6:30 in the morning... but you get the picture.)

So, what do you do to be a Results Not Typical kind of person?

You Know What's Cool?

Today, a gal who I have only said "Hi" to casually at my office said, "Hey, you're looking good! You've lost weight!".

Sweet! That totally made my day!

A day off

Monday, February 11, 2008

After 20 days straight of going to the gym (with one day as an exception because it snowed, so we walked for 4 hrs in the snow instead!), I took a day off yesterday.

Instead, I got a massage! Wow... did I have some sore muscles that I didn't even realize were sore until she started in on them. What a great way to spend a day off. I plan on rewarding myself at every milestone with a massage... if I can afford it! :)

14 Days straight!

Today makes 14 days straight of cardio at the gym (with the exception of yesterday since it snowed... took a 4 hr walk in the snow instead... which was a crazy workout itself!)
