This is from one of my favorite areas in the world - Ogunquit Maine. I love the rocky coast. My husband and I had to delay this trip from earlier this year and ended up getting a better room. I am not complaining. My only wish is that I could come here every year!

Hey, wow... this Aussie gal has actually been there! I'm a Stephen King fan and one of my fave books is "the Stand" which features Ogunquit so I *had* to go when we drove through Maine back in 2002. (Yes, I did go look at Stephen King's house too...)
What a lovely pic! Hope you have a great time!

She is on vacation around her birthday (Oct. 6th) and we go up for her birthday. We haven't been in a couple of years but we have some great memories of our trips to Maine. Have a great time.

The Flood of 2011 – Pictures included

Thursday, September 08, 2011

It is a bit disheartening how much devastation the world is going through. I usually try to look on the bright side, today is a bit somber though. Our area is once again on the National news because of severe flooding. We had a similar flood in 2006, but this one has surpassed that one. This year there are evacuations from areas that were not even affected in 2006. For all those people who lost everything and then rebuilt my heart goes out to them.

I have a boat garden in my yard – it is a real row boat filled with dirt and planted with flowers. This is the boat last year…

And this is my boat garden today…

I at least was able to walk the dog although we had to take a different route because of the flooding. Here is the road I use to walk her down…

Instead we walked along the road I live on and the name should tell you something, River Rd. And yes one of the rivers in our area is not far from it. Here is picture of the golf course that runs along Chenango River…

And this is the building along the golf course…

And one of my favorite sounds in the area is the trains that run along the hill which is behind my house and across from our local highway. That highway is closed from a mud slide and parts of the tracks are hanging off the side of the hill…

When I took my walk earlier I walked across a bridge that goes over that highway and it was surreal to have no vehicles on it. I felt like I was a part of a Stephen King book.

On a positive side - we had several family members and friends call us today - we are loved!

I was devastated! Sorry to hear about your garden! I must have misunderstood or misread an earlier blog. My heart goes out to you all. These seem so familiar. We had family who lost everything in Jopin , Missouri and floods along the Mississippip River we knwo also affected. Been down that road and feel for you all. so sad for you all too. Sorry your garden was udner water. Did you get to ahrvest ti before the flooding? I hope so. Unreal! But when you hear from someone personally you can really see the devastation than just hearng about it on TV. Sorry for all your lost and suffering. I pray you all survive this! I knwo it amkes you want to be on higher ground. I pray you get pass this. May G*d be with you all. Many times good comes out of bad. WE get flooding in our area, but have nto for two years, (Our basement had a foot of water, but what you got was more than a foot! )

I pray you do not get fungus in your house, because that is what we got after we had a flood and water damage, in 2007 and I got very sick from the fungus, a lung infection and it took me 6 months to get over it. I am still weak from it, but stronger than I was. Make sure you clean it with lemon or lysol, its the only way to kill fungus . It will rot everything in its path if you dont kill it. The only other thing that can kill it is sunlight or an ultraviolet lamp. Good luck! susana

I'm counting on August being a great month!

Monday, August 01, 2011

My new goals for this month stem off a weekend challenge. I joined a new team with active challenges and I strive when I get involved with this type of activity. It has been a while since I've been in a challenging team so this will be fun!
emoticon
I realize I don't get enough fruit in my diet so my first challenge is to get 2 fruits a day. I figured 2 was a good number since it will be a challenge but a manageable one. I am great with vegetables, but I will also make it a point to count what I do get and make sure there are a minimum of 3 a day. This will give me 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. I want to make sure every day is set to a reasonable number. Some days I blow this number out of the water and other days I probably come short. My focus will be consistency for the month with fruits and vegetables. I'm moving back to smaller goals that will make a positive difference.
emoticon emoticon
On the food challenge I'm also limiting my sugary treats. I have been out of control lately so I'm going to fill this void with the sweet taste of fruits. Who knows maybe I'll be adding more fruit sooner!
emoticon emoticon
Exercise has also fallen by the wayside so I'm going to also strive for consistency with this goal. I'm not going to be too specific with the cardio goal today because I have an appointment to get the results to my Foot MRI and blood tests. These results will hopefully give me a go ahead to get back out on the pavement! I love to walk and with this so limited I've slumped at everything else. I will definitely add bicycling for a cardio workout too as long as I can. If my foot has a stress fracture I don't know what limitations I may have.

I will do strength exercises at least 2 times a week - I'll shoot for three down the road. I may get into a good rhythm and move it up sooner, but again I want to make this a small step. I'm going with the two steps forward mentality.
emoticon emoticon

For now these are my goals - I'm feeling more positive than I have recently so I'm counting on August being a great month!

Just hope you go off the sugary food slow. what you do is taper down and have peanut butter and a smaller amout of sugar (peanut butter will curb the appetite for sugar.) and that will help you. also you cant go cold turkey off chocolate or coffee, for you can get a very bad withdrawal headache and even dizzy. (Been there) Soem people go down to Dark special mini chocolate bars. (Its what I am working down on. (Choclate can prevent migraines and its also good for you, because it helps with dilating the veins in the brain! With dark choclate it has a higher level of antioxidants too, which help prevent headaches. And as you wean yourself off any substance; go to a smaller amount. But never go off anything fast or fully overnight! (To go off anything fully, take scullcap, also spelled skullcap. Its a mild sedative which also feeds your brain the nutrients the brain needs when going off any foods. Plus its a food for the brain; but never go off any chemical overnight! ( Skullcap got me off of Inderal and diazepan in two days . I took that for my nerves were bad) . Good luck!

Ball Squash - It's whats for dinner!

Friday, July 29, 2011

Last year I posted a blog about an 8 ball squash which a friend gave me. I had never seen one before, and on my quest to try new things I was happy to try it. It tasted just like a regular zucchini.

This year while looking for plants to add to my garden I found the yellow squash variety called just a ball squash. Of course I had to grow some so I picked them up and set up a small raised garden and picked up some long poles and deer fencing. I have a problem with all kinds of creatures this type of siding seemed best. I'm happy to say so far so good.

I picked my first Ball squash and my friend gave me another 8 ball. Last night I whipped up some filling and filled those two squash plus a couple of peppers. It is cooking in my Crockpot as I type and I'm looking forward to a nice tasty dinner tonight.

I used ground turkey, rice, Ro Tel, onion and salt & pepper. I covered it with more diced tomatoes. I think it will be quite tasty and healthy too! Here is a picture of my squash while I was in the process of making it.

Balloons To Heaven

Monday, July 18, 2011

Tonight was our local chapter of The Compassionate Friends annual Balloons to Heaven. Yesterday I was asking for rain and this morning storms were predicted for late afternoon. So this morning I was asking for it Not to rain on our event.

It has been 12 years since my oldest son died. I have been a member of The Compassionate friends for about that long and I now hold the position of newsletter editor and treasurer. It is my way of doing something positive in memory of my son.

Earlier this year my cousin's daughter had a car accident and died. I have been spending more time with her and having dinner a couple of times a month. We have also taken a couple of trips together. She can share things with me that she doesn't feel comfortable sharing with others. I understand her pain and my heart aches for her. She decided she would come to the Balloons event and ended up seeing three people she knew from other areas of her life. I think sometimes that helps to know there are others in the same boat as you.

I also let a balloon go for a Spark Friend of mine with a note attached for her son. I hope things work our for her soon. I have had her on my mind. Here is a picture of those three ballons going up together - the green one is for my Spark Friends son Mike, the pink in is for my cousin's daughter Ashley, and the purple is for my son Joshua.

And this is a shot of a bunch of our balloons going above the trees (last year Joshua's ended up in a tree)

And this is a picture of the beautiful cake someone made for the event.
