I'm counting on August being a great month!

Monday, August 01, 2011

My new goals for this month stem off a weekend challenge. I joined a new team with active challenges and I strive when I get involved with this type of activity. It has been a while since I've been in a challenging team so this will be fun!
emoticon
I realize I don't get enough fruit in my diet so my first challenge is to get 2 fruits a day. I figured 2 was a good number since it will be a challenge but a manageable one. I am great with vegetables, but I will also make it a point to count what I do get and make sure there are a minimum of 3 a day. This will give me 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. I want to make sure every day is set to a reasonable number. Some days I blow this number out of the water and other days I probably come short. My focus will be consistency for the month with fruits and vegetables. I'm moving back to smaller goals that will make a positive difference.
emoticon emoticon
On the food challenge I'm also limiting my sugary treats. I have been out of control lately so I'm going to fill this void with the sweet taste of fruits. Who knows maybe I'll be adding more fruit sooner!
emoticon emoticon
Exercise has also fallen by the wayside so I'm going to also strive for consistency with this goal. I'm not going to be too specific with the cardio goal today because I have an appointment to get the results to my Foot MRI and blood tests. These results will hopefully give me a go ahead to get back out on the pavement! I love to walk and with this so limited I've slumped at everything else. I will definitely add bicycling for a cardio workout too as long as I can. If my foot has a stress fracture I don't know what limitations I may have.

I will do strength exercises at least 2 times a week - I'll shoot for three down the road. I may get into a good rhythm and move it up sooner, but again I want to make this a small step. I'm going with the two steps forward mentality.
emoticon emoticon

For now these are my goals - I'm feeling more positive than I have recently so I'm counting on August being a great month!

Just hope you go off the sugary food slow. what you do is taper down and have peanut butter and a smaller amout of sugar (peanut butter will curb the appetite for sugar.) and that will help you. also you cant go cold turkey off chocolate or coffee, for you can get a very bad withdrawal headache and even dizzy. (Been there) Soem people go down to Dark special mini chocolate bars. (Its what I am working down on. (Choclate can prevent migraines and its also good for you, because it helps with dilating the veins in the brain! With dark choclate it has a higher level of antioxidants too, which help prevent headaches. And as you wean yourself off any substance; go to a smaller amount. But never go off anything fast or fully overnight! (To go off anything fully, take scullcap, also spelled skullcap. Its a mild sedative which also feeds your brain the nutrients the brain needs when going off any foods. Plus its a food for the brain; but never go off any chemical overnight! ( Skullcap got me off of Inderal and diazepan in two days . I took that for my nerves were bad) . Good luck!

Ball Squash - It's whats for dinner!

Friday, July 29, 2011

Last year I posted a blog about an 8 ball squash which a friend gave me. I had never seen one before, and on my quest to try new things I was happy to try it. It tasted just like a regular zucchini.

This year while looking for plants to add to my garden I found the yellow squash variety called just a ball squash. Of course I had to grow some so I picked them up and set up a small raised garden and picked up some long poles and deer fencing. I have a problem with all kinds of creatures this type of siding seemed best. I'm happy to say so far so good.

I picked my first Ball squash and my friend gave me another 8 ball. Last night I whipped up some filling and filled those two squash plus a couple of peppers. It is cooking in my Crockpot as I type and I'm looking forward to a nice tasty dinner tonight.

I used ground turkey, rice, Ro Tel, onion and salt & pepper. I covered it with more diced tomatoes. I think it will be quite tasty and healthy too! Here is a picture of my squash while I was in the process of making it.

Balloons To Heaven

Monday, July 18, 2011

Tonight was our local chapter of The Compassionate Friends annual Balloons to Heaven. Yesterday I was asking for rain and this morning storms were predicted for late afternoon. So this morning I was asking for it Not to rain on our event.

It has been 12 years since my oldest son died. I have been a member of The Compassionate friends for about that long and I now hold the position of newsletter editor and treasurer. It is my way of doing something positive in memory of my son.

Earlier this year my cousin's daughter had a car accident and died. I have been spending more time with her and having dinner a couple of times a month. We have also taken a couple of trips together. She can share things with me that she doesn't feel comfortable sharing with others. I understand her pain and my heart aches for her. She decided she would come to the Balloons event and ended up seeing three people she knew from other areas of her life. I think sometimes that helps to know there are others in the same boat as you.

I also let a balloon go for a Spark Friend of mine with a note attached for her son. I hope things work our for her soon. I have had her on my mind. Here is a picture of those three ballons going up together - the green one is for my Spark Friends son Mike, the pink in is for my cousin's daughter Ashley, and the purple is for my son Joshua.

And this is a shot of a bunch of our balloons going above the trees (last year Joshua's ended up in a tree)

And this is a picture of the beautiful cake someone made for the event.

It is really bad when the Physical Therapist gives up on you

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Wow, Iíve been going around and around with a foot issue. Basically a lot of pain the more I use it. That can be a real bummer when you love to walk. Last year I was walking in the morning before work and walking in the afternoon for lunch. I also worked at getting some strength training in.

Well at the beginning of this year my foot doctor sent me to physical therapy. I started with one therapist who three weeks into the treatment had a baby. This left me with a student who had some great ideas and tried some different treatment. When he left after his time was up I ended up with a therapist who the student trained with. They both kind of treated me when the student was there, but now Iím full time with him. He has been with the company quite a few years and had some recent training in a new method of treatment. I do feel like they have been trying, Iím just sort of sad that they canít do more.

After all those people and months of going and doing their stretching exercises faithfully we are at a plateau and he feels like the treatment isnít doing me any good. He has had a couple of recommendations that he asked the doctor about, but he is dragging his feet. I was pretty persistent the last time I called the doctor that I needed to do something about this pain. So my next step is a bone scan. Iím not sure what he is looking for, and Iím not sure I want him to find it. I do want relief though.

During all this time I have not exercised like I should have. Some of it because I love to walk and I had to give it up. The other reason I think is just because Iíve been in a funkÖ I also have eaten poorly and gained weight back. Iím pretty disappointed in myself. With all that said I am trying to add more exercising Ė weights need to come back into my life and I also need to get on my bike Ė after all there is no weight being put on my foot while I ride. Yes this is the plan!

I hope the foot issue is resolved soon, & you get some relief!
Good luck! And BTW...I'm LOVIN' the flowers in your background!

One year I received a gift card for a reflexology appointment. I was clueless, but the young woman (fresh out of college with oriental medicine training) got rid of every ache and pain in my body from head to toe by working over my feet. I felt like jello and was so relaxed nothing bothered me. I highly recommend it if you can find a good one who will listen to you about possible injuries in your feet. Keep us updated. I hope you have found some answers by now.

Hey Val - I know a little of what you're going through. I had foot surgery 3 years ago and it was harder to recoup from that than the hip surgery I had 7 years ago.

I was going to suggest that you use a bike but you already have that as part of your plan (excellent!) and I was also going to suggest some water exercises but I see someone else did, too.

We all go through funks for one reason or another and you're entitled to have yours. Stop, take a deep breath, exhale and then give yourself a hug and look at all the positives. You have a plan and that's exactly what you need. When I come across these sorts of situations I write things down.... obstacles, fears, needs, etc and how I can overcome/attain them.

You'll figure it out - just be patient with yourself. Have you tried a PT that handles sports injuries?? Sometimes they have different approaches. Just a suggestion.

I'm so sorry to hear about your foot problems. Something very similar happened with me, except mine was that I was walking blisters on my feet! I had to slow it down a bit, and still haven't been able to get back on track. It's hard to choose a different exercise when you've found one that you love so much and can't do anymore. Luckily, you've picked the bike thing. Best of luck!!

I'd switch physical therapists. I mean come on... 3 weeks along and the first one went on maternity leave. Seems like she shouldn't have been accepting new patients when she was so close to her due date. I'd say go somewhere else. Bike riding and swimming might be good exercises for you, but I think even bike riding will put some stress on your foot. Maybe do some upper body stuff like a rowing machine or something. Good luck!!!

emoticonSeems to be an awfully long time to be having this foot pain. I understand what it is like to have foot pain issues and not be able to walk. I had a cynovial cyst in my left foot last year and that took about 3 months if not longer to completely heal. I had physiotherapy for a week and an orthotic made. I also used a lot of anti inflammatory gel on the area every night for ages! I even took ant inflamatory tablets when I travelled to Machu Pichu in Peru last August. sounds like you need a 2nd opinion!

April Showers are bringing May Flowers!

Friday, April 29, 2011

We have had so many days of rain that yesterday I was sure that we would need to find the ark. Major storms ripped through our area, but thankfully not as bad as some areas. I hope all you Sparkers are safe and have no ill effects from the weather.

Thankfully last night the sun came out in time for us to cook our dinner out in the gill. When I got home and went to my back yard this was the beauty I saw!

They are some hearty flowers to withstand those storms and come through and blossom so nicely the very same day they were wind whipped and down poured on. Wow, nature is so amazing.
