My Positive Vibes Challenge week 1

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

The July challenge for my Positive Vibes Team has us paired with another member for 1 week, then we switch teammates. Well the results are in and for week 1 my partner and I tied for 1st place.

One of the points I get is for a blog entry so here in week 2 I'm again trying hard to place at the top of the heap. I like that the challenge has some different aspects evey week. One of the challenges for me this week is to get my 2 fruits in. The veggies are not usually a problem. The good news is sometimes I'm looking for something to eat and I think I need 1 more fruit so what will it be.

I know I've said this before but I really like different challenges. They have changed my way of life.

I generally don't have a whopping amount of fruit either. But the fruit I have is rock solid steady: an apple with my yogurt nearly every day for breakfast and later for a snack either an apple or banana...sometimes strawberries or pineapple.

You are PERFECTING the art of variety...both in your workouts and food choices! Good for YOU! :-)

I love fruits so it's the veggies that I have to work on. Try mixing up a bowl of strawberries and blueberries then right before eating add sliced bananas dipped in orange juice or diet sprite to keep from turning brown.

I add this fruit mix to yogurt for a filling breakfast, or to sugar free vanilla pudding along with a dollop of lite cool whip for a yummy dessert.

The mix is also great added to a spinach salad for a nice change for lunch.

and, my favorite way to eat the fruit mix is made into a smoothie adding a cup of the fruit mix to a cup of light soy milk, a fat free strawberry/banana yogurt and a cup of crushed ice. Makes a nice big smoothie full of protein...a good on the way meal when the morning is rushed.

Good luck with week 2 of your challenge! emoticon

Aren't challenges the best? Speaking of produce-related challenges, a team I'm on issued a 6-10-freggie-a-day challenge. It wasn't quite as easy as I thought it would be, but it was an eye-opener. Even though I track everything I eat, I've looked more at the bottom line than variety.

Your fruit challenge shouldn't be too hard. If you like berries, there are blackberries, blueberries, red raspberries, and strawberries out, and in some farmers' markets, they've had sour cherries! (mm-mmm, so good!) Like you, I'm more of a veggie lover, so fruit is normally more difficult to increase, but right now...so much easier! Good luck to you :) - Sandi emoticon

Kickboxing aerobic style

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

I read a blog today from someone that started SP the same time I did and they were talking about how much they have improved with their fitness level since the beginning. I too feel that is one of my major achievements since I started. Iíve done many different fitness activities in the last 5 months from walking, riding bikes (indoors and out), various fitness classes and kayaking.

In a couple if the fitness classes we were introduced to various exercises each week, so one week we would do aerobics with the bender ball, one week dance aerobics and another kickboxing. I found it very challenging and rewarding and a great way to get exposed to different workouts. The instructor Iíve had for these classes is quite intense and the couple of classes she has shown us kickboxing which was a challenge for me to keep up because she move with such speed and my coordination leaves something to be desired.

I didnít have the choices I wanted for July classes so I choose Kickboxing to try and conquer it. Tonight was the first night of class and I have to say I did fairly well. I usually get jumbled when she starts with us facing forward and then starts alternating direction with a little hop in the middle. She gets moving so fast that my arms want to do things at a different time than my legs. All in all, tonight I felt quite successful and Iím hoping after a few more classes I will see even more improvement.

Like my classmate Ė I am doing so much more now than I was when I began and it feels so good to have improved with all that I am doing.

My first meeting with other Sparkers! And would you call it Kayaking?

Monday, July 12, 2010

When I first started at SP I was amazed that our little area had a local team. I quickly joined as I loved the idea of others close by doing the same thing as me. Our leaders are very good about posting activities that are going on in the area and sometimes creating their own activities. For the month of July they decided to have a Binghamton Spark Rally at a local park.

A few of the teamís members met at the park and had a pot luck lunch Ė all healthy and very tasty food was enjoyed by all. After lunch some of us went kayaking while others swam.

Our area is surrounded by rivers so when you say you went kayaking people imagine white rapids and kayaks that flip over. We kayaked on a lake with the type of kayak that your feet are still showing. Iím a newbie to kayaking so my ignorance shows here.

Anyway, it might have been more like paddling around in the lake, but it was a nice little workout and relaxing at the same time for someone like me that finds peace around the water. This wonít be my last time kayaking and maybe someday I will try it in a local river.

Glad you had such a good time! I was just watching something on the news about how kayaking has become a very popular sport recently.

Nice that you all had a pot luck too with healthy foods :)

I sometimes wish that us Mahogany Melters all lived close by eachother so that we could all have little Melters get together. But, we don't, so we'll all just have to enjoy eachother online :)

Have a good day and plan another kayaking trip soon!

Great Balls of Fitness

Thursday, July 08, 2010

One of the ways I kicked up my fitness after starting SparkPeople was to sign up for fitness classes at our local college. I have taken many different ones, but all with the same instructor. She offers variations so you can fit the workout to your level of fitness. The first class I took I thought would kill me and I struggled to make it through. Iím glad to say that I have come a long way since that class.

Tonight was the beginning of Great Balls of Fitness and the ball for this class was the stability ball. We will be using different balls like the bender ball, medicine ball, and Pilateís ball depending on the night. I love the fact that the workout changes so your muscles are not use to the workout and it is more beneficial.

Even though the stability ball was used tonight it was a high cardio workout. We did bounces, jumping jacks, lunges, side steps while on the ball. We also did cardio with the ball in hand and after a while it gets a bit heavy. It is quite an interesting workout. I have done things on the stability ball that I didnít know was possible.

Logging Dinner Out

Wednesday, July 07, 2010

I believe that we must do what makes us happy and sometimes for me that is eating out. Tonight it was a celebration with a couple of friends that I have been dining with for over 20 years.

Prior to going I looked at the menu online and decided on Tuna or Salmon. Unfortunately, this restaurant didnít post the calorie counts so I just tried to pick wisely. They offered only one vegetable other than potato and it was mushrooms which I absolutely hate. So I chose the side of wild rice on the side and Tuna as my entrťe. I would have preferred broccoli, but you take what they offer. I also had a couple of bites of the birthday girlís dessert.

I just plugged in my dinner and I have to say Iím not as bad off as I expected. Even when I let myself indulge a little I still do fairly well. I am getting better at this.

The other positive step I made today was walking three times in the worse hot humid temperatures. I had to drop my car off at the garage and walk 20 minutes to work, I walked at lunch and I walked back to the garage after work. So even in these awful temps I got some cardio in.

On a challenging day like today, either the festive celebration or the searing heat could've wrecked your healthy plans and goals, but you steeled yourself against allowing that to happen... emoticon emoticon emoticon Beautifully well done! I'm having to do all of my exercise indoors (have some health problems which make being out in the heat close to impossible). Keep up the great work!! - Sandi emoticon

My family and I went out to lunch the other day (I love Texas Roadhouse) and I had salmon with fresh veggies (steamed broccoli and carrots) and a house salad with a side of low fat ranch. I removed the croutons and most of the cheese and voila, I had a healthy and very satisfying meal! Good for you!

Good for you to track track TRACK and WALKING on a day like this!

I REALLY wanted to get out there myself, and I COULD have, but I worried I would aggravate the sunburned tops of my feet even more...don't want to risk grounding myself yet even longer!

Looking forward to kayaking...hoping there will be a response to the rally I posted!
