Heal The World

Saturday, September 10, 2011

Tomorrow is 9-11. Ten years ago, our world changed. The twin towers

the pentagon

flight 93

It was our generation's Pearl Harbor. An attack on all Americans. Yes - all Americans whether they were Christian, Jewish, Muslim, white, black, brown, Asian, European, African, Middle Eastern, rich, poor, healthy, sick, young, old. Children grew up without a mother or a father, others lost an aunt, an uncle, son, daughter, husband, wife. All America grieved with them.

We have fought wars for the last decade. Children in my class weren't even born yet when this happened.

We also blamed any and all Muslims

and we shouldn't.

We need to honor the first responders

and remember that we all jump rope the same way no matter who we are

and teach tolerance and peace because world peace is in our hands

What will you do to pass on the peace to others today? And honor those who lost their lives that day?

We are all learning everyday! Me too. I am learning how to deal with loss. Perfect example is 911, I am still upset about it like it was yesterday. IBut blaming all Muslims would be pretty ignorant!

I think more jealousy, mental illness & politics. I will honor them with prayer & compassion for others.

Muscle vs. Fat

Wednesday, September 07, 2011

Several times lately I have seen people tell others that muscle weighs more than fat. Think for a minute, does a pound of feathers weigh more than a pound of duck? Well, muscle does not weigh more than fat (five pounds is five pounds) but it is nicer to look at.

As you can see, the 5 lbs. of fat is much bulkier than the 5 lbs. of muscle, but five pounds is still five pounds. Muscle does not weigh more than fat.

Fat is bulky and lumpy so if you carry an extra five pounds of fat, you'll be lumpier than with five pounds more muscle. A five pound pile of fat will take up more space (volume) than a five pound pile of muscle; but five pounds is still five pounds, so for those of you that don't "get" English, you cannot say one thing weighing a certain weight weighs more than another thing at that same weight. It's a common joke to play on an 8-year old. The correct way to state the muscle weighs more than fat scenario is, "Muscle is heavier by volume than fat."

A woman weighing 150 pounds with 19% fat will look much smaller (and be much healthier) than a woman at 150 pounds with 35% fat. They weigh the same, yet the composition is different. Because muscle is more dense than fat the person with less fat and more muscle will look smaller.

Stop being so obsessed with body weight and start paying attention to body composition. How much body fat do you have compared to muscle? Simply seeing how much you weigh isn't very helpful.

-fat.html

Please stop the myth that muscle weighs more than fat. And sorry if I burst any bubbles out there.

But notice the difference in volume between the muscle and fat in your picture....given the same volume of muscle and fat, the muscle will weigh more...Muscle is denser and takes up way less space than fat does.

A pound of feathers would take up lots more space than a pound of duck meat.

But you are right, a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat.

Did you know muscle holds more water, though? So, if you retain water easily, you ight have more muscle! emoticon

A Nice Thing Happened Today

Saturday, September 03, 2011

It really started yesterday when I met with a set of parents that I never am sure where I stand with. Yesterday meeting we felt like we were all on the same page and really working together for the child.
Today, in water aerobics, I kept looking at the lady next to me, thinking "I know her, but from where?" After class we were in the spa and she said I know I know you but I don't remember where from...long story short...she is the mother of one of my original students when I first started teaching students with autism. he was in Kindergarten then and is in 6th grade now. She told me that it is all because of me and me pushing him to do more for three years. He has learned social skills and is doing very well.
I am floating. I never thought I would know anything about my original students. She made my week, heck my month. She told me I made a difference and thanked me. You have to understand that we didn't always see eye to eye when her son was in my room, so this meant a lot.
I just had to share.

That is wonderful!! It is things like that that keep me going when I feel like giving up. I was in a meeting at church a few weeks ago and saw someone that I thought looked familiar but couldn't place her. After the meeting, she came up to me and said that her son was in 10th grade now. Then I knew who she was.
