Thirteen things your child's teacher won't tell you

Saturday, July 03, 2010

I found this on the internet and thought I would share. It is from Reader's Digest. Enjoy.

1. If we teach small children, don’t tell us that our jobs are “so cute” and that you wish you could glue and color all day long.

2. I’m not a marriage counselor. At parent-teacher conferences, let’s stick to Dakota’s progress, not how your husband won’t help you around the house.

3. We’re sick of standardized testing and having to “teach to the test.”

4. Kids used to go out and play after school and resolve problems on their own. Now, with computers and TV, they lack the skills to communicate. They don’t know how to get past hurt feelings without telling the teacher and having her fix it.

5. When I hear a loud belch, I remember that a student’s manners are a reflection of his parents’.

6. Your child may be the center of your universe, but I have to share mine with 25 others.

7. Please help us by turning off the texting feature on your child’s phone during school hours.

8. Guys who dribble a ball for a couple of hours a game can make up to $20 million a year. We educate future leaders and make about $51,000 a year.

9. We take on the role of mother, father, psychologist, friend, and adviser every day. Plus, we’re watching for learning disabilities, issues at home, peer pressure, drug abuse, and bullying.

10. Kids dish on your secrets all the time—money, religion, politics, even Dad’s vasectomy.

11. Please, no more mugs, frames, or stuffed animals. A gift card to Starbucks or Staples would be more than enough. A thank-you note: even better.

12. We love snow days and three-day weekends as much as your kid does.

13. The students we remember are happy, respectful, and good-hearted, not necessarily the ones with the highest grades.

New shoes = New Outlook

Friday, July 02, 2010

I just bought athletic shoes (and they look just like any other athlectic shoe!) that will allow me to wear my custom orthotics. What a difference a shoe makes! And really they weren't more expensive than any good athletic shoe. I am wearing them and it is so good to not be experiencing pain in my left foot. Now I feel that I can do anything. I am eating more, not much, but more. When I looked at my summary calendar, I counted that half of the month I didn't even eat 1200 calories. I am going to eat at least 1300 every day this month and see what happens. I am doing the right things but know that I need to eat more. Hopefully the extra will not affect my blood sugars. Will let you know how it is working for me.

Sounds like you have a good plan. I know my sister in law is trying very hard to avoid starting on insulin.

Support given to a confused person ready to quit - not now

Thursday, July 01, 2010

First thank you all for your support. I gained strength from all who commented on my previous blog. All told me that I do have the power to continue and to achieve my goals, it may just take longer than planned. One comment caught my attention about maybe not eating enough. I looked at my summary calendar and noticed that this past month there were many days that I didn't meet my calorie range at all. While I don't want to eat something just to make a number, I do need to be eating enough to keep my body working. I also know that my body "dumps" sugar if my blood sugars go too low. That is a possibility on that problem also. I am going to eat in the middle of my range of calories. I am going to get up in the morning when it is time. Due to my diabetes, I will need to be on a schedule for the rest of my life. The basic goal here is to avoid insulin as long as I can. I have been diabetic for 15 years and I think that my body is having trouble with it right now. I do have a physical in 15 days and will talk to my doctor then. Again, thank you for all the support.

Confusion

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

I have been eating right. Making healthy choices. Staying on a schedule. Exercising 5 times a week. Blood sugars are responding. Weighed myself this morning and gained 4 pounds! What is up with that! I know I have said in earlier blogs that I was willing to maintain. But I am not willing to gain! I feel betrayed by my body right now. I don't know if it is because I tend to eat at the lower end of my range of calories and my body wants more food...but then my blood sugars are too high. Maybe I need to mix up my exercise, but then I have to consider my foot and what it can do. I am ready to give up and just keep my blood sugars under control. I am very upset with myself right now, I track what I eat, I track my exercise and then I gain! What is going on? No change in measurements either. I am ready to give up.

You may need a few more calories. Are there foods that won't mess up your blood sugars that will provide you with more calories? Are you able to cycle your calories higher a couple days per week?
You've made a lot of progress. 4 lbs. isn't worth blowing all your progress on. It will come off again! emoticon

Hope this helps a bit...I just used it in a newsletter to provide some encouragement to my residents in the program I manage...thought it appropriate for you:

Don't Quit
Author Unknown

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road your trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and its turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When they might have won, had they stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victors cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when your hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit!
emoticon Hang in there!!

I'm fighting what I think is water weight & that sounds like it might be you're problem too. I had been exercising inside on the treadmill & even tho I was sweating, my husband didn't think I was sweating enough to get rid of the water buildup. So I've exercised outside the last 3 days & it seems to be helping some.

Hang in there!!!

Before you panic, rethink your last few days. How's your sodium content been? Any chance you had Chinese food or something processed with a lot of salt the evening before weigh in? Have you been doing a lot of strength training this past week. Your muscles will take in water to help them heal. Were you wearing your shoes by mistake, lol, I'm kind of joking here. Most people do not advocate this, but I am a fan of weighing myself daily. I expect the number to bounce around but it gives me a good handle on how my week is going. Jump on the scale again tomorrow, you may be surprised by what you see.

Congrats on all the positive, healthy changes you are making happen in your body! Stick with it and you will see results! emoticon

You may have hit a plateau. Also, when we work our muscles, they're breaking down making little tears. Water tends to deposit into those tears. Don't worry, when the muscle rebuilds itself that water weight will go away. You're doing wonderful! Exercising 5 days a week! That's awesome! Take pride in what you're doing! Celebrate that! When you're committed to doing the work, YOU WILL SEE RESULTS!!!

Have you been taking measurements too? When you first start exercising there's a two week or so period where the body gains weight due to the fact that it's making muscles. It hasn't swung the equation around enough for the fat loss to outweigh the muscle gain. Be patient, and it will start to change. I learned that from Dr. Oz.

#1 - Don't give up! Trust the process. A 4# weight gain isn't necessarily permanent. I can fluctuate that much both ways in one week. It might just be water retention from too much sodium in a meal. Do something that helps you to destress and keep doing the things that help your blood sugar.
And keep thinking - This is only temporary!

My Diabetic Plan

Friday, June 25, 2010

My blood sugars haven't done well this week. I think in part because of my tooth and the root canal, but also in part because I have been sleeping in and not on schedule this week. When I am on schedule I seem to do better. So I am going to get up next week at 6 and stay on school schedule even though it is summer. I can't go in for my physical with my blood sugars doing this. I tend to dump sugar if my blood sugars go too low and then when I take the reading the reading is high. I know this won't make much sense to people without dibetes, but writing it will help me stick to the plan.

I do understand. My blood sugar is getting high, but not there yet. I am working on reducing carbs.

I am sure you know that when you are stressed that your blood sugars go up. As you said your root canal has not helped your stress levels. (I had the same thing with my BP being up this week from my knee surgery.)

I was getting up at 7 each morning, which is an hour after I normally get up during the school year. That gives me a little more sleep, but keeps me on a schedule close to school. (That was pre-knee surgery.)

Hang in there.
