Saturday, April 12, 2014

hi all,
On feb 23 I was admitted to the hospital very sick.
A week later. I was moved to a nursing facility where I am still receiving antibiotics and therapy. It turns out I have an infection in my hip bone but they don't know what caused it. Also don't have future plans either.

Getting better but still tired.

Injections

Sunday, July 21, 2013

HI all,
Finally, a week where some things went right. I got my car back. Yeah! The weather has also finally cooled off and my leg isn't quite as swollen now. And Thursday I got my injection and after 3 days, it has started to help the pain. Yeah! Hopefully it will continue to improve.

Need to do several errands this week-felt so bad lately I have let things go. Wednesday is my GP annual appointment and it will be interesting to see what she says about the past 3 months. Next weekend is another quiet weekend so that will be good too.

Have a good week everyone! Diana

CT results

Sunday, July 14, 2013

Well the CT did show a herniated disk at L2 (right above my fusion) so the pain doctor ordered a series of 2 injections 2 weeks apart. I don't know why he changed it from the 3 injections the back doctor originally ordered, but not going to fight about it right now.

So Thursday I am scheduled to get the first injection and I am scheduled to work from home on Friday. He also ordered a TENS unit for me-I don't think it will help the back pain, but it might help my one leg issue.

Busy week coming up-my car should be fixed Mon or Tues so I will get rid of the rental-that should help with my hip since the rental is irritating it (it is taller and hard to get in and out of it). Work has been swamped and then I'm off for the injection, so lots to do before then. Meanwhile the summer heat has come back so that should cause some swelling to come up.

Take care and keep cool! Diana

Pain Specialist

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Well, the appointment with the pain specialist was a little disapointing. I'm hoping things improve.
We went over what had happened since surgery, he watched me walk, and pressed on points to determine pain. Then he started his recommendations. Physical therapy with an SI specialist (existing issue but not one that I have energy for right now), and then ordered a CT of my back. He's not sure he agrees with my back surgeon and he thinks it may be the knee causing the pain so he also ordered a TENS unit. So he wouldn't schedule my back injections ordered by my back doctor nor would he extend the presecription for my pain medicine until we get that resolved (I will have to go back to my GP for more).

I'm pretty disappointed with him-but hopefully he will change his mind when he sees the CT. IF not, I'm back to the GP asking for more help. This has been a 3 month nightmare!

TAke are everyone, Diana

I think the pain management doc is way off base if he won't give you pain meds until there is (hopefully) a permanent solution. To make you suffer is cruel. What is his reasoning for not providing pain relief? I'd find a new pain doc myself. Another thing to consider is having your spouse come to appts. w/you, if you are married or another family member.

My husband tries to come to all my neurology, surgeon & pain doc appts.--esp. pain doc to let him know I am really in acute pain.I guess there is a huge problem of people trying to get pain meds that don't need them. They must have a different effect as I surely am not getting happy on them & morphine just made me too sleepy so back on Norco even though it is not as effective.

Been at this pain thing about 7 YEARS now. Had to quit work.Only social life is doc appts. , physical therapy & "head" therapy--depression pretty severe.

In process of going to Mayo Clinic. One dx ix Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (also called RSD) but it affects both arms & hands, touching a piece of paper hurts. Have to wear several pairs of gloves. But also it is affecting my right foot (think pain signals originating from lower back issues)...

That has been successfully treated twice w/series of injections at surgery center. Was in a wheelchair; walking now.

But arms & hands getting worse (had surgery on both for carpel tunnel which helped some for 6 mos.).

Had surgery on right foot for plantar fasciitis which healed fine but stirred up my nerve pain impulses like crazy & caused the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome to start there.

Sorry for typos & errors. Writing on phone w/stylus as have gloves on; doesn't work too well.

But wanted to encourage you to find pain relief.Living w/chronic pain has caused me to get suicidal at times.Nothing to fool with.

Take care!

That is so frustrating! I understand about having so many doctors and then they don't all agree, etc. I have learned I have to be my own advocate and be more assertive when necessary but it's hard to not push so hard they get mad. After all, they have the knowledge and experience ( or so they think). But it's your body and you know what is normal and you deserve to have the best care you can get. My pain doctor is the one I see the most and at first I didn't think I liked her but after some time, I learned to trust her and she sees that I am cooperative and appreciative and now we have a good relationship. Hopefully in time this guy will be a great help to you. My dr did things that frustrated me in the beginning but after she was satisfied and had her questions answered and got the results she needed from procedures, she then proceeded to other treatments. It's just not the quick fix I wanted either. Hopefully time will give you the answers you need. It's unfortunate he didn't give you the pain meds you need in the meantime though. My pain dr has been great about that. She knows I don't take them unless I have to but she keeps me supplied just in case I need them. Hang in there and let us know how things turn out. We care about you.

Hang in there Diana. Not every doctor is the right doctor for every person. Hold on until after the CT scan and if you aren't satisfied, talk to your GP and see what further recommendations they can up with to help you. emoticon

Hang on - I am so sorry you are in so much pain. You do know that it doesn't hurt the pain specialist one bit - after all it isn't HIS body, is it? Will pray you get some relief soon.

    Hi there,

i have always wished that my doctors could sit around a table together and discuss my needs and situation--of course, that has never happened when it involves so many different folks. I use my PCP as a clearing house for prescriptions and treatments and see him regularly to run my health care by his knowledge. He can, will, and has checked on things that didn't quite fit together. He also has pushed for better care or service for me at times with the right doc, pushing up an appointment or whatever. My case is different than yours because my pain doc is my helpful, go-to guy. He and I have been together for 15 years and he has been able to clear out a lot of the doc talk and get to the bottom of things.

You need my guy because he also has had chronic pain and issues and he goes those extra miles. I do know there is a connection between the knee and back because my back started after the RSD in my right knee tried to ruin my life. Then, things unfolded and went to the place where I now am. I am guessing that it may be your back guy who is your go-to guy. I hope that you can get what you need soon and that you can have some relief.

I'll keep you in my prayers, my friend.
Gentle hugs,
Sylvia

Another Set Back

Saturday, June 22, 2013

Hi all,
I have been struggling for the past year with swelling in my legs-especially the left one which has my total knee replacement. After a couple of trips to the doctor and some lasix, we seemed to get it under control when in April I noticed a new pain in my upper thigh of the left leg. AFter a trip to the GP, she suggested going to the back doctor since I hadn't seen him in a year and a half. He switched hospitals and is on the far north side of Indy-doable, but not real convenient to see him. I finally got in this week and after doing Xrays, he delivered some bad news. The area above my fusion (L-3 through S1) is now starting to deteriorate to the point of needing surgery. My original fusion and hardware looks great. This was a known risk and with my arthritis, one that I assumed would eventually happen-just not this quickly.

The doctor knows I'm not ready for another surgery yet, so suggested trying steroid injections to see if they will handle the pain. He referred me back to the old pain management guy and I 'm okay with him. Here's hoping the injections work for a while. I'm not ready for surgery.

Have a good weekend, Diana.

Hey, I'm Indy, too! I got 3 opinions (2 spine surgeons & 1 neurosurgeon) about getting surgery for all my back issues & they all said NO as I also have arthritis & surgery would speed up the progress of the arthritis & cause more pain issues. Is that what happened to you?

They said my back looked like a 90-year-old. Just turned 59 but back probs started about 15 years ago & have gotten worse & now hand & arm pain (though several reasons behind that, probably, not just spine) & hip & leg pain & of course all this causes daily headaches!

    Hi there,
I'm at my pain doc's office waiting for my ride. We share some similar issues, my friend. My pain doc just gave me the most hope I've gotten. The most helpful treatments I've had we're to break down scar tissue that is possibly my biggest invisible pain producer. He described a new procedure some 5years down the road that he thinks will make a big difference for me, he also complemented me, my effort, and my spirit--and he thinks my situation will improve.

I really needed hope--and praise didn't hurt either. I pray you get the same. I'm here for you and am on your side.
Gentle hugs,
Sylvia
